Service Failure = KMC Marine. I recently had KMC Marine do my annual out-of-water maintenance on my 2016 32' Intrepid. They have done the service work for me over the past 2 years. Unfortunately this will be the last year after they damaged my Garmin electronics and denied all responsibility. KMC was simply supposed to paint the bottom, do the annual on my Yamahas, and fix a steering leak. In the coarse of the 9 days they had my boat, they let the batteries die. Somewhere during the process of attempting to recharge my batteries, they spiked the Garmin NEMA 2000 network and damaged my Garmin Reactor. I contacted KMC to help resolve the issue, who passed me onto Garmin tech support. After troubleshooting with Garmin, Garmin suggested I replace the Garmin Reactor. Garmin placed the most likely blame on the 12vdc system receiving power spikes during the battery recharging process. I had my local Garmin tech troubleshoot and subsequently replace the Garmin Reactor. He also stated that the NEMA 2000 backbone is susceptible to voltage spikes and drops due to improper charging. My Garmin repair bill was approximately $1,250.00 for the part and the 2 hours of labor to repair. I contacted KMC with all the info, Garmin logs showing when the power failure occurred (during their care/custody/control), and the work order for the Garmin repair. I attempted for 3 days to speak with Management or Ownership, with no return emails or phone calls. I drove to their office so I could see them in person since I was being ignored. After a brief meeting with Tom, Robert, and Jeremy, they denied any wrong doing. They first blamed the dead batteries on me, which I quickly refuted with both the Garmin logs and their service timeline. The service work I requested required my batteries to be turned on, which occurred on Day 2. All systems normal, no mention of dead or weak batteries. The notification of dead batteries occurred on day 4. My Garmin logs concur that the voltage started dropping below the alarm threshold at 10pm at night on Day 2, about 8 hours after they had started my service work. They then went on to claim nothing they could have done should have resulted in the damage I received, claiming Garmin was just covering themselves by warning against voltage spikes. Their only written response to me thus far has been a response to a review I left on Google Reviews, most of which is the same here. They quickly turn the blame back on the vessels lack of a 3rd battery to augment the 12VDC system. Unfortunately it doesn't matter how many batteries a vessel has. If the batteries are left on and the 12VDC batteries are depleted, that's not good for the electronics. Additionally, if a charger is now attached improperly, voltage spikes can easily occur and damage the system. Their claim that "nothing we did could have caused this" is incorrect from the start. Anyone who has the slightest knowledge of electronics would know that voltage drops and voltage spikes are the #1 reason for electronics failure. By leaving the batteries on and letting them die, they created the worst voltage drop you can have, the long slow drop. Then, by attaching a simple battery charger, you can easily create a voltage spike. During the impromptu meeting I had with KMC management / service, the lead person in charge actually made a comment that no matter what they did, my fuse panel should have protected my electronics. As this "expert with many years in the business" had to be corrected, fuses don't protect against voltage spikes. Fuses protect by limiting the amount of current, hence a 3 AMP/5 AMP/10 AMP etc. AMP = Current, not voltage. If you apply 6VDC to 24VDC Automatic charger to a 12VDC system, you can most certainly damage the electronics. I am not a weekend boater. I am a USCG licensed yacht captain who works on boats everyday. In addition I am a former US Navy Electronics Technician who has 25+ years of experience with marine electronics. KMC can't simply claim my boat is rigged wrong and deny blame. It's a 2016 Intrepid factory rigged vessel that seems to have worked for 6+ years. This issue only arose when KMC left the batteries on, depleted the batteries, and charged them improperly. I would caution anyone using KMC's Services after my most recent interaction. Their managements denial, dismissiveness, and failure to even contact me regarding the problem only shows their lack of customer service and their lack of knowledge of electronics in general. I don't know to begin! From my first conversation over the phone with Dale to the moment we left the lot with our new boat, everyone was extremely friendly, professional, and accommodating. We purchased a preowned boat but were treated as if we were buying a brand new yacht- a true testament to excellent customer service. What really impressed us was their "after the purchase" commitment to the customer. We traveled from Gainesville so we decided to make a weekend out of being in Fort Lauderdale. KMC went above and beyond making sure that we were set up for a safe 4.5 hour ride back home- checking/fixing trailer lights, replacing the strap, re-situating the boat to fit optimally on the trailer, among many other things including a wash down and flushing of the motor. I do not often take the time to praise a company for their work, but my experience with KMC Marine compelled me to do so. I recently had my 2005 Jupiter completely upgraded (motors, controls, paint, electronics etc). I had gotten several quotes from companies around the Miami/FLL area. My decision came easily after I met with Doug (Service Manager) and the head mechanic Jeremy. It immediately became clear to me that they would treat my boat with the same degree of detail that I would do myself. Jeremy is a master Yamaha mechanic and amazingly can also fabricate components and install electronics at a level on par with the best marine electronics installers in the area. As with most jobs, the scope of the job would change as I or they came up with new ideas. They were always open to any changes and executed the work perfectly. My boat is better than brand new! I give KMC Marine (all the staff!) including the brothers that own the business my highest rating and appreciation. read more

I have been boating for over 50 years. I have owned a boat in Florida for over 20 now, and in south Florida, 10 years. I came across KMC approximately 2 years ago when looking for a new boat. Rob helped me through the buying process and I now own a great boat for a great price. Rob and his entire staff are fantastic. They really care about their customers. KMC, and the entire staff have gone out of their way to do whatever they could to make my boating experience better. From yard work to engine repair, the work is done, and done right. Now, I must admit that there have been some minor "warranty" situations, but they were resolved without any problem, issue or extra charge. KMC stands behind its work. I purposely take my boat from Miami to Pompano, just because I know that if I leave it with KMC for work, it will be done right and they will not take shortcuts. I am sorry but after being a loyal customer for so many years and having spent thousands of dollars in this shop I feel obligated to write this review. I didn't write this before because I wanted to give them another chance but the last call I made to them was the last drop in the bucket. This review goes back about a couple of year as well as this most recent treatment that I received. Here is the two years ago portion of the review: in 2013 I took my boat in for maintenance of my two Yamaha 225 Outboards yearly maintenance. When I expected to spend about $1600 on yearly maintenance turned out to be about $7,000.00. The $1600 would include the typical yearly maintenance stuff such as impellers, change oil, change spark plugs, etc. After dropping off my 28 Ft Cuddy I got a call from their mechanic saying that my mid sections were corroded and that it was a well know problem with those Yamahas built between 2004 - 05. He asked me if I was getting an alarm when I was in idle speed and I confirmed with a YES. The cost to rebuilt the two midsection was going to be about $5K (both engines) on top of what I had already approved for maintenance work. I agreed to proceed with the work because I love my boat and because I trusted those guys for many years and even with other boats. After I picked up my boat and taking it to the keys for the summer I found my boat seriously overheating and I was unable to flush one of the motors with a hose (the engine would not Pee with a hose) like i've always done it. I called KMC, told them about the problem and explained that I was in the keys for the summer and unable to bring the boat back. Since I was stuck in the keys for the summer and unable to ring the boat back I had a local shop look into and replace some thermostats and the impellers which were supposed to have been replaced by KMC. The fix improved the overheat but it did not resolve the issue so I ended up staying the summer in the keys with a problem boat. When I came back from the keys that year I brought the boat back to KMC, BUT because it had been serviced by another mechanic they decided to point the finger to the other mech. That same year, my boat was broken into and all my electronics were stolen. So, after dealing with my insurance company I hired KMC to replaced it all and by the way FIX the overheat/no Pee issue. They proceeded to replace thermostats again, charged me for it and perform the installation of my new GPS, gauges, etc. One of the components of this installation included a Radar Cable that cost me $180.00 which I personally purchased a gave io them with the explicit request not to cut and splice the cable. So, when I went to pick up my boat, The cable had been cut and spliced, my boat was filthy and the boat still would not Pee. One of the mechanics that installed the Radar cable told me it was just easier to cut than to route the cable through the hard top. So, I went inside talked to management and asked it be rectified. They agreed to go ahead and replace the $180.00 cable, clean the boat, and give another shot on the fact that one of the motor still would not Pee. When I went to pick up the boat again after they said the boat was ready. I was so thankful and was able to re-establish the trust. So, I thought. Up to this day, my boat still has overheating issues. The motor doesn't Pee and can no be flushed properly. KMC told that they had done everything they could and they could not figure out unless I spend more in labor hours for them to break down everything they had already been paid to do once. Here is today's portion of the review: Today, I called in to schedule a simple fuel line replacement. And not to my surprise, here is their response... "We have 30 boats in front of you...we are too busy...maybe you can find someone else to take it to...." this was their response. It is unfortunate that those guys cater to client base around Lighthouse Point that has no time to write up reviews like this and that is probably why they are still in business. They serve a bunch of old guys with fat wallets and don't care. Because I stood up to my rights as a consumer and complained about service in the most polite way I now get treated as an undesirable client. Don't worry. You will not see my money again. You will never see me again. And I will dedicate plenty of time in this as well as in other web sites to tell my story. I will be an advocate against your company in the fishing clubs which I belong to and to every good friend of mine that owns boats and which I used to refer to you. read more
