Parr Creek is a nice bakery right on the main street of Lewistown…read more It's one of those places, though, where you need to arrive early if you want the best selection of goodies. By late morning there won't be much left. By late morning, there were only a few donuts on display. There isn't much room for seating here, so to take advantage of one of these treats, expect to wait or just take it to go. Parr Creek has a small breakfast menu, of the type of things you'd expect from a place like this. No full course meals here, just a wrap, pancakes, muffins, scones and cinnamon or caramel rolls. At least that's what was available on the day I was there. There may be other options during the week. The menu is on a whiteboard and it seems the locals don't need to look at the board at all, they just know what to get. On the other hand, there's a small lunch menu with enough selections to make you feel less guilty about indulging a sweet tooth. Next visit, I might try one of them. The sourdough pancakes were served with a rhubarb/strawberry compote that nicely balanced the pancake and I liked that it didn't have the same high level of sweetness as a syrup -- which is also available if that's your preference. Now, the cinnamon roll was gigantic. It was also very good. The frosting was a buttercream, like you get on a cake, and that gave it a completely different flavor than the usual melted sugar. A little of it goes a long way and I preferred to eat around the sweet and just enjoy the subtle cinnamon taste. If you're exploring the area, then make a point to visit Parr Creek.

If none of that tempts you, then perhaps the Wilcoxson's ice cream, a Montana-made ice cream, might. The name, as I understand it, comes from this being two doors down from the grocery store. It makes it easy to remember. The inside space is comfortable, but with a small-town farmhouse feel. They've opened the space in a second room and filled it with stuffed chairs and a table or two where customers enjoy their coffee, tea, sandwich, or ice cream, read a book, chat with friends and neighbors, and otherwise soak up the atmosphere. There is nothing screaming pretentious, but rather homey. The counter area also has a couple of tables and booths. On my first visit, I had to try the breakfast burrito. Here, the burrito is panini-pressed on their grill. Filled with chorizo, egg, sour cream, cheese, and a wonderfully lightly spiced salsa that brings it together with every bite, the burrito was quite good. If truly hot and spicy is a must-have, this won't do it, but that doesn't make this any less tasty. Unless you get the daily special, the deli sandwiches can be made with a choice of bread, meat, and cheese. Picking something from the bakery is best done early in the morning before everything disappears. Because it's a small shop, it has smaller quantities. The cheese strudel and cinnamon buns are delicious. The muffins, while okay, didn't wow me as much for some reason. The coffee, the main reason I stopped in, was very good. With all the usual coffee options, 2 Doors Down also has Tumblewood Teas and Italian and French sodas. It's a nice addition to the Shields Valley community and a stop for me next time I'm in the area.

It's tucked away downtown right next to treeline coffee which is convenient if you want to pair your croissant with a specialty coffee. They offer bread, sandwiches and a huge variety of baked goods and other deserts that all looked amazing. They even offer a vegan desert! I tried the cinnamon bun and at first I was disappointed that it didn't come with frosting, but once I tasted it, all disappointment went out the window. It was unbelievably flakey, soft and flavorful. It was dusted with sugar, bursting with cinnamon and indulgent. It was easily one of the best cinnamon rolls I've ever had and now I know why Wild Crumb is so popular!

We only ended up getting three items: their celebrated huckleberry scone, a cinnamon roll, and an almond croissant. We really liked the scone, but that's probably more because we're big fans of huckleberries than anything about it being outstanding. The almond croissant was good, as was the roll, but they were both beyond flaky--too flaky--and crumbs and powdered sugar were flying everywhere. In hindsight, we wish we had gotten a savory item to round things out because, overall, nothing was bad but nothing was capital-G Great. The staff are super friendly and helpful, but there was no one bussing or cleaning tables, so everything was pretty unkempt. We think it's 3.5 stars, but we're rounding up because we really enjoyed the overall vibe of the place and can see ourselves coming back on future visits.
