Well, I spoke with the owner and he pointed out that I was likely confusing single meat sandwich prices with the double. It's possible that the single was 5.99 at one time and the double 7.99. Although I consider the double meat sandwich high priced today, he pointed out to me that you get 2/3 of a pound of meat on the sandwich, so maybe 14.99 though high is not too far out of line. The owner challenged me to find better value at a non chain BBQ joint. Off the top of my head, I can name three non-chain BBQ joints where you get excellent value for the money: Evie Mae's in Wolfforth up near Lubbock ( free self-serve beer with your meal there as well), Thorndale Meat Market in Thorndale, and the Old 300 in Blanco closer to home. I have lived here for 9 years and had never tried it. Oh my, what time I have wasted. This bbq is uhh-ma-zing! Its location is very unassuming. It's a meat market and really a spice market too! But you can go in and order cooked food and eat there or take it to go. Ive had the brisket, sausage and baby back ribs, creamed corn, beans and potato salad. I live everything. When deer season rolls around we have them process our meat and WOW do they ever do an excellent job. Our favorites are the meat snack sticks and the summer sausage style along with their ground venison mixed with pork! It's all worth it. I have been going to Kleins once week and sometmes twice starting in 2015 for the slice bar bq sandwich. For 6 years it was fantastic. The owners have allowed their son and friend to "purchase" the restaurant and quality has really gone downhill. The last sandwich I ordered (literally it is the last sandwich) was 2 slices that were still connected by the grissle, ligaments and fat and was dry with very little flavor. I have noticed on my last 3 visits that the briskets werent being trimmed very well, and the brisket is turned to allow for a longer slice by cutting with the grain. Kleins needs to train their staff to trim a briket, and cut against the grain, and quit relying on the sauce to make up for the lack of flavor. We have family from out of town visit every Christmas, so we're constantly trying new restaurants to add to our list. BBQ restaurants are always on the hit list. Yesterday, we had plans to visit some local wineries, which took us to the Boerne area. I had heard good things about Klein Smokehaus, so we gave it a try. Wow! What a delicious lunch! The brisket was tender and moist, the baby back ribs were moist and meaty, and the sausage was very tasty and not at all gritty. As for the sides, we ate the creamed corn, red skin potato salad, the pinto beans, and the green beans. All were delicious! The atmosphere is relaxed, as would be expected at a BBQ restaurant, and the service was top notch. Folks are very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend Klein Smokehaus for a delicious, and very satisfying meal. We'll be back many times more in the future, but get there early before they run out of the good stuff. read more

A friend brings us a freezer-full of processed deer meats, sausage, and chopped steaks from Klein's each year and while I think it's quite good--it's also MEGA-overpriced. I do have to say that the whole smoked turkey we bought at New Year's was a steal at $59 for an 18 pound bird...so WHY is the same sliced smoked turkey breast $14.99 per pound at the barbeque counter?! $14.99 per pound? FOR BBQ TURKEY?!? Yes it's good, but an 8 oz package of beef sticks and a pound and half of turkey breast set me back $36 this week. That's nuts!! Oh, and their comments on this site say that when Klein's purchased Farmers Meat Market on '07, they "preserved the same employees and culture". Well if you consider surly, rude and condescending counter help "culture", that would have been better NOT preserved. I have found it even though it is take out only. The quality is top notch and the sides are extremely good. Try especially the broccoli carrot and raisin salad. Chopped brisket was not dry and had the wonderful smoked flavor of Texas oaks. Turkey was great also had the same fantastic smoked note. Try it and you will not be disappointed. We've eaten BBQ several times during our stay at home weeks. First, I appreciate their process for keeping us safe. We usually get the turkey sandwiches. I tried the beef brisket sandwich and it was great. I prefer by brisket on the lean side and this was. Today I tried the broccoli salad. It was great and a nice accompaniment to the brisket. The Smokehaus is headed in the right direction, but not there yet. Since the change of ownership a almost a decade ago, they've done a good job of keeping what works (the BBQ) lowering the profile of what doesn't work anymore (the fresh meat) and adding some genuine Texas Hill Country favorites (the smoked meats). Gavin still cuts meat in the back, and he probably helps with the smoke. The 'cue is solid. I'd say it's head-to-head with Boerne's Riverside Market. If you get there too late, you may miss the ribs, which is not a great situation. Love the slaw. Adding two or three tables would be a good idea, but maybe that creates licensing issues or health dept issues or something. Parking is a serious problem and likely constrains their business. I feel like the place is under-recognized and under-developed. You don't feel immersed in a BBQ joint like you do at Salt Lick, the original Rudy's, Coopers in Llano or many other places. You pretty much take your sandwich and go. Some marketing expertise in the front of the house and in media would be a good idea. But it still wouldn't solve the parking. There's a lot of missed potential here, but I'd like to end with one important point: their sliced brisket po-boy is to die for. read more

Dropped off a couple of deer to be processed and while there two young boys came in after shooting a deer to get it processed. The boys had made some mistakes on skinning animal, but nothing bad, however the owner belittled the boy in front of the staff and other customers. He even yelled at them and then after unloading the deer, he took it back and threw it in their truck and told them to go. I've done business here for 11 years, never again if this is how unprofessional they are going to act with young hunters. read more

We bought 2 sliced brisket and 1 sausage Poor Boy sandwiches, chips and 2 waters and 1 soft drink. Bill was around $34.00 which seems pretty pricey considering there is no place to eat your meal and it's all counter service. Aside from getting sauce on all the sandwiches after we asked for them all "dry" when we ordered, the BBQ is pretty good. Good smoke flavor, the sausage was not greasy, decent portions on all sandwiches made the overall visit positive. Recommend if you're on the go. read more
