Really, I wanted to give Kitsch'n 3.5 stars, but I rounded up. My travel buddy and I headed to Roscoe Village on an impossibly gorgeous Wednesday afternoon, hungry for lunch. I'd enjoyed Kitsch'n when I'd lived in Chicago and when it'd first opened in the late 1990s, and I was hungry for its comfort food and laid back atmosphere. Plus, I knew we'd be able to find parking. It was a wee bit after the lunch rush, so we immediately got seated outside. We both ordered a chipoltle bloody Mary after lusting after some we'd seen being consumed at another table. SO good. Nice and spicy, just like I like 'em. I ordered the "Kitsch'n Favorite" tuna melt with spicy curly fries. I'm not one who usually orders tuna melts at restaurants because, hey, my tuna melts KICK ASS, and I figure there's no way they can top mine. But this one? Was great. The tuna salad had nicely balanced flavors (i.e., not too mayonnaise-y) and the way the cheese was melted? It just defied description. My companinon had the chicken and waffles. Now, even though I'm from the south and consider myself somewhat soulful, I've never experienced the chicken and waffle combo that's common in southern soul food cooking. But I had a bite of hers. I gotta say, I don't get the combo. Individually, both the chicken and the waffle were great. But I don't like my sweet with my fried/salty. The service was pretty lame. They weren't that busy, but we had to ask for drinks and things more than once, and our server was just missing at times. I was also sort of sad to see that the menu isn't as "fun" as it was when the restaurant once opened. Where are the ding dongs and twinkies, eh? Anyway, I'm glad it's still there, and Roscoe Village is still my second favorite neighborhood in all of Chicago. read more

Service can slack sometimes. It seems like they're always suffering from "brand new staff syndrome". It's nice to see fresh faces but after a while you just want to recognize someone who knows the menu and how to get items to you quickly. The last time I was there I literally saw the girl who was serving us stop and stare around at the dining area when she was distrought over whether to freshen everyone's water (which hadn't happened in a while), process someone's credit card or run food to tables. The "serve-trons" are always just a little too green. But with all the weird 70's memorabilia it's a fun place to hang out. This is kind of like Roscoe Village's version of Pick Me Up Cafe in Lakeview, only stranger which is why it's so much fun. As far as food goes, I really like the mini burgers. If service were more solid I'd give it 4 stars. read more

To read some of these reviews, you get the impression that Kitsch'n on Roscoe--seriously, a pretty terrible name for a restaurant--has been resting on its many laurels for a long stretch--if having folks like Rachael Ray blurb about your restaurant counts as a "laurel." And for a joint that markets itself as a monument to kitsch, Kitsch'n's collection of '70s and '80s flotsam is really kind of weak and uninspiring; I'm confident that there are garage sales that have more impressive galleries of this kind of stuff merely by accident. But the restaurant is right on the main drag of Roscoe Village with pleasant views of the street--good for watching the parade of yuppie babies and dogs--and the front room feels spacious and comfortable given if it's actually pretty small. And where Kitsch'n got high marks on the morning we were there was on food and service, which is really what counts. We're not really brunch fans--not really into the whole eggs and breakfast dessert for lunch deal--but at breakfast time Kitsch'n seems to offer a wide range of appealing choices. If my "Borracho Breakfast Burrito" wasn't the best or most original I've ever had, it attained more depth of flavor than many (and not really sure what "Danish" hashbrowns are, but they were rosemary-heavy and good, too), and my wife was very pleased with her "Green Eggs & Ham," i.e., with pesto. Special nod to our server, who I think was named Liz: We came up for a long weekend in Chicago with my developmentally-disabled brother-in-law, who isn't always the easiest to deal with when confronted with a menu like Kitsch'n's, which is rather long and unconventional. He just wanted plain pancakes and sausage, which really isn't offered as a menu item. She was especially helpful in putting together an order for him and handled him with genuine good humor throughout the meal. Portions are very generous, but the prices still might be a notch high. read more

this is quickly becoming one of my favorite Chicago haunts, particularly for breakfast platters - the chilaquiles and the carnitas over sweet potato (get the fried egg on top, it's worth it) are probably my favorite though. and any dish that comes with those amazing thin fried potatoes is worth it too. they are quick with the coffee refills (and it's damn fine coffee too) and the portions are hearty but not to the point that you'll be sick after. plus, they've got booze. prices are aight. playing up the name, it's filled with a lot of knick-knacks and random memorabilia. it's like someone opened a diner with all the junk they took from their grandparents' basement. we always have a good time here. there's also a lot of space out back, so don't be worried if the tiny front area is all filled up. read more

My friends and I were looking for a good mimosa brunch place for a friend's birthday weekend and we came here for the first time. The staff was so welcoming, the food was great, and the atmosphere was wonderful-great music and decor. Adrian was our waiter and he was so friendly and the best server we've all ever had. I certainly enjoy the inventive menu to match the 70's inspired decor. Outside dining is a plus. I've been twice and both times have been a little less than impressed with the food. The first time I ordered a falafel; which was probably a poor choice anyways because this isn't the place to go for Middle Eastern food. On the other hand, my friend had the chicken and waffles and I was more jealous than I've ever been in my life. That was really good, although I felt a bit pricey. I was super excited to check this place out so I made a reservation for Mother's Day brunch. I never come out to Roscoe Village and I love the area and this place definitely is super cute and retro. I got the green eggs and ham, my mom ordered the veggie/pesto omelet, my brother ordered the ham and cheese omelet and my other brother decided to go with his unoriginal order of eggs and he went with the coconut French toast. We split an order of bacon and biscuits and gravy. My brother had the bloody mary which was good and we all got a round of mimosa's. The drinks were tasty and we were super excited for our food. But when it came, we were kind of wondering where the rest of it was? My green eggs and ham came with potatoes and 1 piece of Texas toast. It said 3 eggs but looked like maybe 2... and my bro's order of French toast was tiny. Two pieces and about 3 berries for almost $10? Not really worth it. The food was tasty but the portions were tiny. I was wrapping up my trip to Chicago and I returned to a small place I had dined at before when I used to live here. I was solo so I sat at bar. There were two employees hanging out at the counter, (it was early and the place had yet to pick up, which it did by the end of my meal). These two young ladies were a perfect fit for this place and their scrap book discussion, Etsy, Regresty (funny website posting bizarre Etsy items I learned) and general topics were great eavesdropping material. I drank three pots of coffee and order the Huevos Locos (Spicy Crazy Eggs) 10.99 3 eggs scrambled with spicy chorizo, habanero, mango-mojito salsa & pepper-jack cheese, served with warmed soft white corn tortillas, garnished with fresh fruit. I thought it was OK. The eggs were a little dry, they didn't overdue the chorizo, which is no small feat so kudos for that and the habanero had a beef to pick with me and won, stuff had a nice kick to it. The warn corn tortillas were a treat and helped the meal, but I feel like it needed something else. To Recap: The Good: The decor is the standard for kitsch and put a smile on my face. The staff is very helpful, cheerful and attentive, they deserve five stars, great group. The Bad: Bad is too strong, but there are some amazing places for breakfast in Chicago, if this were in Kansas it would be five stars, but in the Windy City the expectations are higher. If you've been here or viewed the photos "Kitsch" is an appropriate name for this cafe in Roscoe. Everywhere you look there is a bright splash of paint and colorful nostalgia. Posters and items of the 70s adorn the walls and shelves. The cafe has more room that it appears. There are a few tables on the main street, two small interior rooms and a high walled back patio. We were happy to grab a seat on the sunny back patio for brunch. The menu mainly consisted of classic American breakfast items, but often with a twist, as well as a couple of Tex-Mex as breakfast items. After ordering Bloody Mary's (their version is very good, has a good bit of kick, especially with an add on of their awesome candied bacon) our group had a difficult time deciding what to pick. There were a fair amount of both savory and sweet options that sounded appealing. One friend had the breakfast nachos which were topped with scrabbled eggs and the other had the omelette. I ended up ordering the breakfast BLT. More candied bacon with lettuce and ripe tomato in a soft, toasted brioche bun. The potato side was a bit unique. Thin bits of deep friend potato, thinner than shoe string, with rosemary and some veggies. I really liked it, but if you are looking for a more traditional, potato side it might not be for you. We got hungry on a bike ride and needed lunch STAT! I called the order in. It was ready when promised, perfectly timed. The social distancing requirements were thoughtful and protected both workers and customers. The meals were nicely packed in containers so they didn't slide around in transit. The place was really hyped to me, so maybe I expected too much. I had the Kitsch'n Chilaquiles, and they were average at best, but by the end of the dish it was grossly soggy and unappetizing. My friend enjoyed the Borracho Breakfast Burrito and my other friend loved the tofu scramble. Drinks were ok, but nothing special. As weird as this may sound, but a mark of a decent restaurant is bathroom cleanliness, if it's clean, then the kitchen is clean. Men's room was pretty nasty, with a broken seat and toilet tissues strewn around. Floor was pretty gross too. I wasn't a fan and felt it was incredibly over rated, but my friends were a bit more forgiving and to be fair they would recommend it. To me there are far better options within walking distance. You know how it's Halloween and you have 3 parties to attend and all have copious amounts of drinking and you figure that you should imbibe (heavily) at the first two but still go to the last one because you still feel like partying even though it's not a good idea? I've been wanting to try this place for weeks and armed with a couple of friends and an a la card gc, I was ready to go. Our wait was only about 20 minutes for 3 people at 11:30am, which isn't bad, considering. Once seated, we were served coffee fast (thank god) and our orders were put in a few minutes after that. The food came out quicker than our waiting time. (Pause for a moment while I remember my delicious food.) Continuing on, I had the chilaquiles and they were glorious. I can't even begin to tell you how much it hit the spot. Now granted, I can probably replicate the fried tortilla chips, eggs, cheese and spiciness, but why would I want to when I can get waited on, get good coffee (my coffee making sucks) and get guaranteed deliciousness? A bit overpriced for a diner-style brunch, especially when the main components are butter and flour. We came because I noticed that they had chicken and waffles on the menu, which my boyfriend has been wanting to try for a while. I don't really understand why they don't give you the whole waffle with the chicken and waffles. For $11, I expect to get the whole waffle. The ancho-honey sauce that they give with the waffles is probabaly where the "kitsch" lies. Not bad, but not quite worth it. Also, the overdose of rosemary and roasted red peppers thrown in with the cubed hashbrowns was an unfavorable combination, in my opinion. Watch out for the hot sauce on the table - my fault, yes, but I failed to notice the "XXXtra hot" warning on the label (made from habanero chilis, it also proclaims...oops, stupid me) and doused my potatoes in the sauce at first bite, thus spoiling my appetite for the rest of the subpar meal. HUNGOVER TESTED, BILLY DEE WILLIAMS APPROVED Under the watchful eye of Billy Dee Williams, who out of the corner of my eye seemed to wink at me from his Colt 45 perch above my table, I chowed down on a plate of chilaquiles billed as "the ultimate hangover breakfast". I basically inhaled that ethereal combo of eggs, tortillas, and smoky chipotle salsa in about 3 minutes which left me feeling like a million bucks. Works every time indeed. read more

BEST PANCAKES and BUSBOYS in town! I don't know why, in the 6 years I've been going here, I haven't tried the pancakes until my last few times...probably because I normally prefer to eat a savory breakfast over sweet, but now I will ALWAYS order the flap jacks. They are freakishly and consistently good. I might even go so far as to call them...flaptastic. :-) (All "you're a nerd" comments are welcome) There is one particular busboy that I really respect. He is ALWAYS on top of filling coffee and water and, on many occasions, he'll just take my order because the server is MIA. He's friendly and hard working and is so much appreciated by me that I often tip him separately. Now, I saw him bussing tables across the street at VoLo but I hope that doesn't mean he's left Kitsch'n! I have eaten many things here for many years. They are GREAT at some things and not so great at others. Good: egg salad sandwich, tuna melt with carmelized jalepeno-jack, cucumbers with tzatziki, curly fries. and, duh, the flapjacks! Iffy: salads, omlettes, breakfast potatoes...rosemary, yuck! Kitsch is kool. I love the idea behind Kitsch'n. The decor is fun and interesting. I like etching a sketch while waiting for my meal, and both the front and back patios are enjoyable to dine on. The back being my favorite because it can cover you from the elements should it need to...and it's a tiki hut! From now on, I'm going mainly for the flapjacks... And the bus boy. read more

I'm going to have to complain about the chicken and waffle situation here. My g/f loves them but I'm gonna have to call bullshit on this one. I ordered the chicken and waffles here and they served them with this gross honey concoction. I asked for maple syrup to go with my waffles and the guy looked at me like I pissed on my plate and pointe to the honey and walked away. The folks at the table next to us asked the waiter what mixed-drinks that he could recommend and he refused to recommend a drink. Super obnoxious waiter! Wow I can not say enough about how happy I was to head to this place... Huge lesson learned, I am very quick to read on yelp before trying a new place and the reviews on here are decidedly questionable at best... One of two things the questionable reviews are older and the restaurant and staff has taken note and corrected or I am lucky... My buddy suggested this place so I reluctantly figured why not, actually said to my other yelper buddy if its bad we will have a funny story to tell on Yelp but here I am on the rooftop yelling as loud as I can this place was great! I had the Coconut Raspberry french toast and it was divine! Moist on the inside and just right on the outside the flavor was full and satisfying for sure, I also had a side of eggs for protein and they were fluffy and plentiful more then the 2 I asked for! - I am not complaining! My buddies meals were equally mouth watering they had the Fried chicken sandwich and the Chilaquiles. I tried the Chilaquiles, I have to say with zero expectations because I am spoiled by Tiztal, to my pleasant surprise they were sooooo delicious! I did not actually try the Chicken sandwich my buddy was inhaling it so quickly, I did not want to risk loosing a finger and he was not offering, so I took his word for it... The service was amazing too! We actually had a team attending to our every need! I am a huge fan of out door dining and I absolutely loved the back garden seating! You know the drill - you're out late on Saturday night, drinking bottle of O'Doul's after bottle of O'Doul's while you're trying to finish that cutthroat game of Scrabble with your homies. You wake up on Sunday morning with a sour taste in the back of your mouth, and when you stumble to the bathroom, an "X" tile mysteriously falls out of your underwear (ooh, 12 points!). After a hard night out on the town, Kitsch'n has the cure. I love the goofy throwback decor and the unabashedly strong coffee. The menu might not be huge, but it's got about all you can ask for from a breakfast joint. The back patio is great on for just sitting with a drink in one hand and the morning paper in the other on warm days, and the inside is cozy, too. Places like this make me miss Chicago. read more

I wish I could have a better review for this restaurant. To be honest though, I wasn't even given the chance. I came here for brunch on a sunday. For having 1 1/2 patios and inside area i'd hope you'd prepare your kitchen for that type of capacity - but it wasn't even full. None the less, we were seated at our table and at regular time were greeted by ????? server. There are no introductions anymore to friendly service at restaurants only "Do you two know what you'd like to order?" So I guess i'll order my drink because that's the only thing i've decided on this far. Drinks get dropped off in reasonable time. No complaints other than the sever dipsets to forget us for another 15 minutes. FINALLY we get a chance to order and she leaves with it only to return in a couple and tell us the kitchen is EXTREMELY backed up. Well have to wait a long time and that she's only telling us so we can cancel. UHHH OKAY? I guess we'll cancel. takes the canceled order away and comes back AGAIN to tell us we can actually put our food order in if we still want to. ?!?!?!?! Last time I checked you don't hire kitchen staff that can't handle a large seating sunday brunch and an incompetent servers staff who deter customers by recommending canceling their orders. Thankfully orange with a peel NEXT DOOR had no wait and was able to immediately handle our order with no issues. read more

This place has a good thing going. You feel like you're in your grandmother's kitchen from the 60s (I think - I'm not a good decor judge), from the retro, round tables and chairs, to the Etch-A-Sketch. The service is very friendly, the dining room pretty comfortable. Once you get a table it's a little slow-going, but the servers are very cool. I always feel about ten years old when I read the menu and wind up getting goofy stuff, like grilled cheese sandwiches or BLTs. The egg dishes are tasty - good huevos rancheros. I've usually gone there for lunch on weekdays when I didn't find it too crowded, but I'm sure the weekend breakfast/lunch lines are insane, so bring your soduku and patient attitude. read more

Wow... The mighty have fallen.... Husband and I haven't been here in AGES, and something has happened since we were there last. We came in and ordered our regular orders-- He got the chicken and waffles, I got the Chilaquiles. Chicken and waffles were now a overcooked breaded cutlet and dense chewy waffles. No longer were there luscious pieces of actual chicken and light and fluffy waffles. My chilaquiles were more tortilla than anything else. The sparse cheese was government-grade and the eggs were almost nonexistent. Both of us had bacon... instead of the thick-cut awesome bacon they had before, it was diner-grade bacon, and not in the good way. Greasy, small, and limp. It seems like they decided to cut corners somewhere, and it definitely showed. We won't be back. :( read more
