I'd like to start by saying Kitchen Table in Tulum, Mexico is what dinning in your backyard should be like.
To start off this review let me preface a few things:
I got last minute reservations at the restaurant open which is 6pm sharp! I would suggest you try to book ahead if you want something a little later as they do get busy and fill up fast! However, if you get there early, expect to wait outside.
*Caution if you drive: THERE IS NO AVAILABLE PARKING!!! (parking in the area is very hard, so either ride a bike, get a taxi, or show up early and hope!)
That said, after the doors swing open at 6pm, you will enter a rock floored, hut themed, multi level steps, with seating peppered throughout. There is a lot of seating for both large and small parties (I was a party of 4), and there is a open kitchen somewhat at the center of all of this.
*Caution if you have breathing problems: They do use burning fumes to drive off the bugs. This can be a little overwhelming like incense, but if you don't want the mosquito's bare with it, it'll make your overall meal more pleasant. If this is a problem, book a 7pm reservation or later.
However, once you are seated the menu is not overly complex but is changing with the seasons. Their lovely staff is more than knowledgeable to walk you through the choice of salads, seafood's, and other delicious Portuguese inspired plates.
*NOW THE SECRET: if you look around and do come early enough again (or reserve on the phone) there are big plastic coolers by the kitchen. In a few of those coolers are the biggest local warm water lobsters you've ever seen! Now this is NOT ADVERTISED on the menu, so you need to ask your server, but the deal here is that you can choose your lobster, they weigh it in front of you (roughly 1500 peso per KG, mine was 1410 peso) and then once you agree that you got the CASH ONLY to cover the cost, they'll split that thing down the middle and grill it up for you! This is the whole reason to come here so be sure to get the damn lobster!
... I regret not getting the one that was twice the size :/
Other than that, the staff is more than willing to bend over backwards to make sure you have a lovely meal, and my appreciations again to the chef for the comped lagostina's. Those were delicious!
*Be sure to check out the cool washrooms too! read more
