Another of Melbourne's hidden treasure, this one tucked away in a side branch of the Royale Arcade off Bourke St Mall. This unassuming place goes by the name of The Kitchen Royale and the flavours it serves live up to the name.
The selection of meals is German and Turkish influence with Kebabs, German Steak Sandwiches, Turkish Grilled Salad (awesome!), and Falafels, Spaetzle (German Egg Noddles), Lahmajoun, Borek, Gozleme and more.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner your sure to find something that is interesting and unusual. Be sure to leave extra time to enjoy the food as everything is made fresh when you order. It might take a little longer for the order to arrive at your table but it's worth the wait. I had the Turkish Grilled Salad and was blown away by the complexity of the salad combined with Kofte, which is a spiced meat patti.
There are a few tables outside the kitchen but make sure to take a peek inside and see the large Golden Mermaid on the wall overlooking the whole kitchen area. Ask about her amazing history.
Finally, to top off an amazing meal, try the unique Portuguese blend of coffee or some Ayran which is a refreshing yoghurt smoothy.
This place is such a wonderful departure from standard cafe fare that its worth seeking out. You might have the most luck finding it by entering the Royal Arcade off the Elizabeth street entrance. read more
