One hell of a time.
George Calombaris' Hellenic Hotel tries to go where others have failed (it used to be the former Hobsons Bay Hotel), and succeeds to bring something special back to Williamstown.
The renovations are impressive. It's bright inside, with blue colours and white themed brick décor that shows off the plants in hanging baskets to create a pleasing and yet welcoming contrast.
There's heaps of room, both up and downstairs. The service is pleasing to say the least, it's not perfect (like cleaning on top of drinks, use the sides), but better than most restaurants.
The food is delicious, but the pricing is often inconsistent and confusing.
The oysters with Kilpatrick jam are fresh and possibly the freshest oysters I have tasted, the jam is a different take on the sauce, with more texture and weight, adding more flavour and one I am now a fan of.
The prawn toast, taramosalata and sriracha doesn't catch the eye, but with each bite shows the tasty wonders that are hidden inside. It's a clever dish and it's sure to delight prawn lovers.
Cucumber salad, feta and miso dressing is a refreshing take on a simple salad. The miso dressing carries this dish to another level. Expensive at $13, but you will enjoy it.
The lamb shoulder, cabbage, with honey mustard was the standout dish. I don't believe I have tasted a lamb that was cooked to this degree before. It defined what tender means, the skin was a juicy fat heavenly treat and the cabbage marinated in honey mustard made this a must eat (even though they left a bit of foil behind).
On the side we had charred broccoli, walnut & pear and chips, feta, with oregano. They both went beautifully with the menu selections we made. The sides though are expensive, $12 for chips is overpriced for what you get. So take caution there.
For dessert (like we needed this, had to take some food home), we couldn't get passed the sticky date, olive oil butterscotch and spiced caramel. An absolute treat, one my stomach made room for.
The Kosmo cocktails (Vodka, blood orange liqueur, cranberry and lime juice) were tasty and made me experience vertigo for most of the night, while the Hellenic Ale wasn't as smooth or tasty for a beer that I was expecting.
Williamstown has been calling out for a place that really hits the mark, it's not quite 5 stars, but it's a welcome addition to Greek cuisine. Recommended! read more
