Recently expanded, Kitchen a la Mode is a mainstay on South Orange Ave. I went to have knives sharpened. The prices were reasonable and the process was simple. You drop them off one day and pick them up the next. It's a pleasure to have sharp knives. And in a truly efficient manner, all the questions I had were answered on a prerecorded message on the phone. But that's just a sliver of what they have to offer. Many kitchen utensils, large and small, knives, pots, pans, olive oils adorn the walls and the store itself. The prices are competive to other high end suppliers and you can look, feel and even try items before you buy them. While just browsing, I asked for some advise, warning them that I wasn't buying and friendly, on point advise was forthcoming. Highly recommend! And remember, shop local. read more

I love, love, love this very well stocked store! It's a haven for those who love to cook. Has everything that one can need for the kitchen. From Aprons to cast iron cleaners, pots, pans, knives and specialty oils, premium products, etc. This is my second time here. I've been trying to shop more locally than online. I had placed an order from the big online store that I feel is taking over and running people out of business with their sometimes subpar items. Sure, they are convenient, but I'm all about helping the local businesses. I canceled my items once I walked into this store and found the cast iron soap, cast iron brush, melting dome and bacon press I had ordered, all with similar prices, except that I was able to see and touch the items. The store clerks have so far, been helpful. Pay a visit if ever in the area. You won't be disappointed. read more

What a cute, cozy little business in the heart of South Orange! Situated along the main street, you'll find the charm of Kitchen a la Mode to satisfy your kitchen needs. In the summer when I went, the AC is amazing! But so is the Staff who are so friendly. I know BBB has a lot of these items, but I feel that KALM puts a personal spin on their merchandise, as I particularly LOVE their 50-state Tea Towels which are unique to the business and the handmade soaps that they sell. I have visited several times and they have some unique items. We enjoy picking up the flavored balsamic oils to complement our meals. Today, we went in and an older woman with the glasses was there. We looked around deciding on what we would like to purchase and she comes over and is completely obnoxious and disrespectful. She was also very condescending in her speech. We walked out without purchase and will not return. There a plenty of stores that you can purchase the exact items that they sell. This is the reason why small businesses suffer because they have poor service. I would advise you to shop elsewhere. There are people that will treat you with respect and want your business. read more

The customer service in this store is TOP NOTCH...very friendly and helpful. Some time ago, I was looking for a typical, pizza peel, couldn't find one. Found it here. I was thrilled because it was part of a wedding shower gift for my niece. Recently, I was looking for a saddle of venison cake pan. Kathleen suggested I buy a hearth bread pan. My go to for soda stream refills- when all the big box guys would always sell out, I found out they had some and haven't looked back. I loved this place, the staff were knowledgeable/honest and the products were very good. The old owner would not bring in bad product. The new owners are not as good. I bought a few products of questionable quality and the last straw was the sub par knife sharpening done to my knives recently. Visible scratches near the blade, dull spots on the blade and just such an overall bad job I have ordered replacement knives. I will no longer support this store. read more

Very fun Kitchen shop in downtown South Orange. Interesting to browse but also great for basics like coffee makers, baking pans and tools. We now shop here for all our kitchen needs instead of going to BBB or ordering online. This is also a great place to buy gifts. They recently added a registry option as well. read more

Best retail shop on South Orange Ave. Very friendly staff. Great products and everything is nicely displayed. From the outside, it looks like a tiny shop, but it goes in deeper and has two levels. I love that this store is so close to where I am, and that it is a local shop and not a usual run of the mill chain that, lets be honest, can be annoying. I went in for Soda Stream replacement cartridges since, it is closer than going to the Short Hills Mall! And I am glad that I did! this store is like a cozy and friendly home grown version of Williams Sonoma, well in my opinion at least. It had gadgets, cookware, appliances (they sell the Soda Streams there as well) and little jars of things that I obviously wanted to buy and try. If you are someone who loves too cook, experiment and tinker in your kitchen, then this is a place you want to check out. Also the fact that the guy working the register went above and beyond to be nice, helpful and just pleasant all around just made my experience there all the better! Right after moving into South Orange, I had explored the little downtown area and was curious about this store. I needed a present for my grandma, so I thought I would support a local business and get personalized attention. I was glad I did. Like other reviewers said, the store is much bigger than it looks from the outside. The walls, tables, and racks are packed densely with all kinds of gadgets, pots, pans, and devices. The cashier told me the owner was at home sick, but she was very helpful in giving me a tour of the store and helping me choose exactly what I needed. It's the kind of neighborhood store you dream about: personalized attention, useful inventory, no big box feeling. Obviously, it doesn't have as much volume as BBB but it touches upon every category and has a lot of unusual items you won't find in the chain store. The cashier told me he opened the store 5 years ago because it had always been his dream, and his passion for helping people find useful tools that inspire in the kitchen really shows. We stopped in here to try to find a housewarming present for some friends when we were visiting their new house. This store is fabulous. They have all of the housewares you could possibly want for cooking, baking, or hosting. The staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. They were so eager to make sure we found exactly what we needed and even went above and beyond to make our experience perfect. In the end, we settled on a cutting board in the shape of Brooklyn with all of the neighborhoods highlighted. We thought this was a nice gift for someone who just moved into Brooklyn. Kitchen A La Mode is my favorite store in the world! Seriously. It is a little gem of a store. I am constantly amazed that, as small as the store is, they always seem to have exactly what I need, whether it is an odd baking tool or a pretty table cloth. The proprietor, Ben Salmon is incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his stock, and is alway searching for new and fun things. What I love about the store is that it has practical items for the serious cook, and quirky and pretty things for fun. And the prices on big ticket items like Le Creuset pots are very competitive.
