We were some of the first customers at Kitchen 17 when it first opened in its original tiny location. We were blown away by our first few experiences.
We haven't eaten here for a long time, and for the last few months, we craved their delicious nachos and yummy burgers but haven't gotten around to getting over to the area. In fact, all this time we've referred a ton of our vegan and veg friends to try K-17 out (we have a bunch of them). We assured them all they wouldn't be disappointed...
...What...happened...?
...I'm so disappointed; the same feeling I assured oh so many people they wouldn't have to deal with. I re-visited tonight and wish I had never spent the money. Wasn't even worth a dime.
I hope the owner reads this, and instead of taking offense changes their approach. I'm writing this out of complete sincerity because I am so sad that one of our staple Chicago veg places has become so terrible.
1) Most importantly, the food. My burger was a big pile of MUSH. It was like someone took some beans, mashed them up, and then threw a ton of hot sauce all over it and threw it on a pretty roll. Talk about a mess...When I first picked up the burger, the entire inside fell out and onto my plate. Even veggie burgers should at least somewhat stay together; never has this happened anywhere else.
The flavors were just horrible - why does barbecue sauce need to be THAT spicy. You could have at least warned me! I like spice, but BBQ with more red paper flakes than seasoning...? Come on, do better. And I was so happy to wash it all down with some nice like warm water that tasted like the metal cup it was served in. Could we at least get some ice? By the way, the fries were decent, but you can taste that the cook needs to change the oil a little more frequently...
2) The service. From the minute we walked in, the whole demeanor of everyone was just off-putting. K-17 lost its cozyness with the "upgraded location." No more warm welcomes or "home cooked" feel. No one even asked me how everything was... probably because either didn't care or didn't want to know...
3) The atmosphere. I was so glad to hear you moved to a new location! Thought you deserved a big bold space with all the foot traffic. But, your space is dark and uninviting. There's a fine line between "artsy" and unprofessional. Maybe start by removing the handwritten taped sign on the window that says "I don't open." If I'm paying $30 for two burgers, you can A) Fix your window, or B) Nobody even cares. But even if I'm being picky, the paint job? It's kind of immature to put chalkboard paint through the entire place, no? Oh, and can we get some menus? Or do you only have two?
Overall, really disappointed. Beyond sad that Kitchen 17 has become the worst of the worst veggie dining experiences in Chicago. This city's food game is pretty tight - if you want to last you need to step it up ! read more
