Loved the food, loved the atmosphere! They have lots of interesting events and shows too. The cauliflower wings are fantastic. The beers are a good price and they have a nice selection of ciders. The servers are friendly and fast, the only times I have ever gotten slowish service it has been totally slammed. The pizza is great. Big fan of the deep dish. My go-to place for vegan foods so I figured it was about time I left a review! read more

I created a Yelp for this! We had the vegan pizza a week ago. I was hesitant to try but it was amazing! The cheese tasted like heaven and the bread was delicious. We went back for the mac and cheese, which was incredible. I love that Jenny, the owner, is down to earth and a kind person. I can't believe vegan food can be this good. I regret not taking a photo of the pizza. read more

Wow!! Was not expecting this place to be so good! I am not a vegan myself, but my roommate is a vegetarian, so I seek out places for both of us to try. Kitchen 17 did not disappoint! We definitely over-ordered, but everything we got was top notch. We got the hummus app (to literally die for-- it's so fresh and has whole chickpeas in it), the nachos app, and the special of the day which was a burrito. The nachos and the burrito were very similar, so I wouldn't order both together again, but what goes in them is really good. The portions are big as well. We saw a ton of people eating pizzas and bringing half of them home because they were so big. One thing I will say though- be prepared to take your food to go or wait for a table. The place is really small (I hear they're moving) and the tables are all close together. It's definitely not high class dining, but the food makes it worth it. And, we couldn't leave without dessert. We got the funfetti cake, which was right in line with how good everything else was. Can't wait to go back! read more

The pizza was alright. We got the Mediterranean. The crust on the pizza is amazing but I still wouldn't get it again. M thought it was greasy. What we all agreed upon were the nachos. They were excellent. We also got a slice of apple pie and a muffin. We've had better. The employees were very friendly, but they were stretched really thin. They were scrambling around like crazy: cooking food, ringing people up, serving, and busing tables. There were only about four tables in the whole place and it was packed. There was no place to stand to wait. It was dirty - everywhere I looked was a mess including the kitchen. You can't beat the price. read more

When I found this place, was super excited for vegan pizza on the Northside. While parking can be a challenge, the pizza was sooooooo good!!!! Crust, sauce, cheese, veggies...yummy!!! Veganism can be challenging but when you can find good good like this, makes it a little easier. Definitely recommend and will be back! read more

Although the experience has always been a little strange here, especially in terms of the service part of the meal, I have really enjoyed the food at Kitchen 17-the food is usually very good. However, I have been so put off by them (the customer service and waitstaff) after 2 strange attempts at eating here, that I was reluctant to give it another try. Regardless, I had a vegan friend who I thought would appreciate the food so I decided to give it another try. They are such a mess. We asked how long a pizza would take and were told 45 mins. When we asked if ordering something else would make for a shorter wait, the guy told us that the burgers would take 30 to 35 mins - We were under a time crunch so we opted to order two veggie burgers. 10 minutes after ordering, a pizza was delivered to a table next to us. The order was wrong and the table sent the pizza back. I told the server that we wouldn't mind taking the pizza (and paying for it). He said we could have it for half price (nice) but that our food had already been started. Instead of causing any issues, I said we'd stick with our original order.... 45 minutes go by and we still haven't been served our veggie burgers. So now we are in at a full 55 minutes. Needless to say a little annoyed. Then lo and behold a pizza is delivered to a table that was sat 15 minutes after us! Totally ridiculous. There were 4 people in the kitchen this day. I can't even imagine how it could take an hour to get two veggie burgers to a table! I am not knocking them on their food quality but this is not high end cuisine - it's assembly. This was beyond rude. The server wasn't even sympathetic to what was happening... when asked about what was happening he curtly said, "Sorry, we've been slammed." I don't even have the words for this. It's baffling. Get it together! read more

The pizza crust was awful, which was surprising because pizza dough is typically vegan and there are so many great recipes out there.. and the pizza itself was very salty and flavorless. We couldn't even taste any sauce flavor. Really disappointing and got an upset stomach within 30 minutes of eating. *The fries are very good *Buffalo sauce was terrible read more

After a weekend filled with a humidity & the sweltering heat advisory, I felt the need for a cold, refreshing super salad, it happens. So after reading the stellar reviews here & knowing Kitchen 17 was close by I called in a to-go order, for what else, a salad. I was told this was a cold salad with kale, brussel sprouts etc. & the description was true, but I was expecting something more. For some, a salad can be boring, for someone with a passion for food, health & creativity... a well made vegan salad can be epic. I should have noticed the word salad wasn't high lighted many times in reviews but I wanted to give it a shot, especially when this place has been compared to Chicago Diner & Native Foods, which are phenomenal vegan options. Anyway, this review is purely based on one experience and one menu item I've tried or more like ordered, picked up and got home and didn't eat. It wasn't a freshly made epic salad. The salad was basically part of a pre-packaged kale (kale, carrot, red cabbage), 2 shaved brussel sprouts, half dice/sliced tomato, canned/jarred roasted red pepper, pitted kalamata olives, a few slices of kalamata olive and a creamy dill dressing, which was on the salad. Normally salad dressings are on the side when you're getting a to-go salad so it doesn't make the salad slimey. And I get it, maybe not this time because it was kale but kale doesn't break down unless something acidic is added, which it wasn't, in which case, the kale was dense and chewy. Maybe the dressing was chef prepared, don't know, don't care. I could have picked all the ingredients up and spent less than I did on the one, lazy vegan salad. For those who love it, great, keep going. Not trying to sway you from the business, this is just my honest review of my experience. Other than that...it didn't seem like the cleanest place I've gone to, especially with the front & alley door being open on such a hot day... but maybe that's excusable since it was 30 minutes before closing, who knows. read more

Checked out randomly while looking for a new and interesting place to eat. Not like anywhere else on this strip: it was pretty much a one man show, very boisterous funny talkative guy making the food, ringing up, cleaning (a bit of food strewn about)...the instant effect was to feel like you were in a fun person's living room waiting for them to whip something good up in the kitchen. The wraps and hummus were quite filling, took a little longer to get than the average place but it didn't seem terrible since the place is so likable. Closed a little early since they ran out of food! Great neighborhood place read more

As other reviews have said, the staff here was EXTREMELY unfriendly. My brother made a comment along the lines of "oh i didnt know you guys take tips!" and the person behind the counter replied with a fully deadpan "yeah no shit". My brother's autistic and this made him feel like shit and completely ruined my night. It was a shame cause the concert was absolutely amazing and I had a great time up until then. Even before when I tried ordering, the same member of staff was snippy with me and acted like they didn't wanna work there in the slightest. I initially thought it was just a bad night for that person, but after looking through these other reviews, I think that member of staff is just a miserable and uninviting person. They treated us like we were idiots and like we were nuisances for even THINKING of ordering anything. Other members of staff, such as the person watching doors, were lovely, but the tall, skinny bartender was extremely rude. It's a shame that such a cozy looking place had such an uninviting presence. They were even shit talking other customers in front of us as we ate. Horrible experience and I'd only go again for a concert- never to eat. read more

Great vegan place! They offer menu items that I haven't seen else where...including PIZZA! It was surprisingly very good! You wouldn't know that everything on it was vegan. Okay, so I'm not a vegan (my wife is) and I was skeptical about vegan pizza. Well, Kitchen 17 proved me WRONG, and I'm so glad about it. We got a pan pie with their homemade sausage and pepperoni, light cheese and light sauce. It was AMAZING. The sausage was phenomenal... it had a nice spicy kick to it, and the texture was perfect with the rest of the pizza. I could've eaten the pepperoni just on its own, and I loved that it got a little char while cooking in their oven! The crust itself was delicious, and crispy on the bottom (reminiscent of what Pizza Hut's pan pizzas always dreamed of becoming) and the tomato sauce and cheese mixed perfectly together. I think this is some of the best pizza I've ever had, vegan or not. I ordered their gyro which was delicious, but the pizza was so good... I wish I'd saved more room for that sausage and pep. read more

What a vegantastic little treat, Just off N Broadway, on Briar Street. Burgers and Pizzas, full of flavor, Cows and piggies declare you their savior! Don't skip dessert, for goodness sake, Grab a chocolate cupcake, cookie or shake! Went here with my daughters today,...my first time. Being 100% vegan does not allow them to offer many gluten-free choices, but the nachos were good (though a bit on the spicy side for me) and my girls enjoyed a picturesque pizza. I enjoyed a delicious shake to top it all off. Add a friendly, helpful staff in this laid-back atmosphere, and you've got a recipe for success! read more

We traveled to Chicago last weekend to visit the city, see friends and eat glorious vegan food (especially because Baltimore sucks so bad). we had a list of about 10 places we wanted to try and Kitchen 17 was definitely one, although. we were sad that we couldn't make deep dish pizza night. first off, I'm not giving the place 5 stars because even though the chef is incredible, it's a small place and he was the only one working when we walked in for lunch so I can imagine this place getting slammed and then the experience not being the best. We lucked up though and there was no else in when we arrived so that was awesome. Anyway, as far as the food goes, this was my favorite vegan spot in chitown. my goodness, I got the BBQ cheddar burger and it very well could be the best vegan burger I've ever had. there were complex flavors and perfect bread and a very meaty but not am I eating beef texture. I would instantly become a regular if I lived in Chicago and if your vegan, do not pass up a chance to go to possibly the best spot there. read more

Let me start by saying I am vegan for the animals, not the health aspects. That said: I was looking forward to visiting here based on all the reviews. I was really disappointed. Here's the step by steps review: - you start by ordering at the host stand but they won't let you pay then, you have to wait until after you eat. So I almost walked out from habit and skated in the bill. So I had to wait in line again to pay. Annoying and not efficient. But if the food is good, who really cares? Well... - the spinach artichoke dip, which came highly recommended, actually was not bad. Until it started to settle. I am not exaggerating when I say there was a pool of over 1 tablespoon of oil settling. - the philly cheese steak was coated in oil and grease it dripped onto my pants. And the napkins were cheap as hell so the oil soaked right through to my pants. Guess I have to throw these pants away. The seitan was hard and dry, to apparently soaking it oil is maybe to hide that fact? - the chocolate cake donut didn't even actually look appealing, lumpy and awkward looking. But it's a donut so it has to be good. Well it is... IF YOU LIKE EATING MORE OIL! The parchment paper (which isn't super absorbent by nature), was again, soaked with oil! - the double bacon cheese burger was good, but oily, and super messy, again because of the napkin issue you will have oil all over your hands and clothes. Between the four of us we went through at least 20 napkins. If they invested in better ones people would use less. But that's a whole other review. - if you use the restroom here, once you sit down on the toilet you'll see the red writing on the inside of the door pointing to the lock you just pushed saying that lock doesn't work. It points to slider type lock towards the top. Well, this information would have been helpful to put on the OUTSIDE of the door so you actually see it BEFORE you are mid pee and someone walks in on you. So all and all, I left hungry, disappointed, and feeling sluggish from the half pint of oil I consumed. I won't be back anytime soon, that's for sure. read more

Not sure if Kitchen 17 was having an off day or if we ordered the wrong things, but we were EXTREMELY underwhelmed and disappointed with our meal. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower, spinach and artichoke dip, and the traditional deep dish. The buffalo cauliflower was just alright, but the ranch was disgusting. It seemed like they were running low and maybe tried to make it last longer by adding a lot of water, simply inedible. The spinach and artichoke dip was also underwhelming and watery yet again, it had no flavor or spice. Finally the deep dish, the crust was rock hard there was hardly any cheese and it had no flavor. Please save yourself the time and money and go somewhere else, this place did not live up to the hype around it. I wish I could give this 0 stars. read more

Kitchen 17 is an excellent addition to the neighborhood!! This spot on Briar seems like it has a new business every year. I feel like Kitchen 17 stands a good chance of actually making it. I went there last night and tried the Asian Burger ($8) with a side of potato salad ($3). It's not a "meaty" burger in terms of thickness, but it still packed a lot of flavor and had an interesting texture (probably due to the tempeh). The burger was topped with slaw a ginger slaw, although the ginger didn't seem to come through. Get a side of Sriracha for this burger if you like a little spice. It really brings out all the flavors. The potato salad was SOOOO good! The mustard-spiked rosemary vegenaise really sets it apart from ordinary potato salad. There's so much on the menu that I want to try, but both of these were great first impressions. Plus, the chef/owner is super nice and you can tell he's passionate about his business. I hope vegetarians, vegans, and even die-hard meat eaters will give this place a try. read more

This place is always terrific. Great for sit down or take out. It is a self service place but everyone who works here is super nice and is wearing their masks. The place has cute, quirky decor. Deep dish pizza is a must but they have other great options to sway a meat eater! Favorite Pizza: The Plant Eater. Filled with veggies and has Sesame Za'atar. We add the vegan sausage to ours. Sandwiches: The Gyro and the Philly Cheesesteak. The make their own Seitan here. Yes, they come with lots of fries so if that overwhelms you, definitely ask for a half fry portion. Dessert: The mega cookie mud pie! Think of a french silk but on a chocolate chip cookie crust with oreo topping. So tasty. read more

Eat here if you are okay with gross mistreatment. Me and my friend were one of only two parties in the restaurant. I ordered a pizza. After sitting for over an hour I inquired about my pizza and ask how long it usually takes. The server said there was a problem with my pizza but they are making another one and it would be another 12 minutes. 20 minutes later I have to ask again where is my pizza. She tells me that it was burnt and they have to make another one. I understand mistakes happen. However, I was put off by the lack of communication and indifference. Why did I have to inquire about my pizza more than once? Why didn't the server tell me they burned my pizza and give me an updated time expectation rather than watch me sit and twiddle my thumbs for 45 minutes? If I hadn't said anything with they have even remade the pizza or would they had just kept the $28 I spent on it? There was only one other party at the restaurant. Why was it so hard to complete my order? read more

5 star review from me. I paid $25 for a deep dish pepperoni pizza (vegan ofc) and it was worth it. The cheese is so good I was questioning if it was even vegan and it taste like animal based pizza.Rarely do I find thick crust when ordering vegan pizza, thin crust is always the only option so I'm really glad I found this place. I'm full off of one slice, I want to eat more but I don't think I'll finish lol. It was good. Also polite customer service which is always a plus! read more

We went here on a Friday night, super excited to try a new vegan place. Normally if the food was decent, which it was (just decent), I'd be content, but the experience was awful. First, the person at the counter was rude. Really rude. Why anyone would place this person in a customer-facing position is beyond me. As we waited for our food, I continued to be impressed by how rude he could be to other patrons. If shitty service was a critical component of a successful restaurant, this place would have 3 Michelin stars. But it's not, so it doesn't. Lastly, the environment sucks. Mismatched furniture out of goodwill. Filthy tables. Greasy floors. And blaring, crappy, music - because who wants to talk with their partner while eating? Chicago Diner is very close by and in every single metric, a far better place. But there is a reason why it is so well regarded - go there, skip Kitchen 17. If vegan options are so limited that vegans are willing to tolerate being treated like shit, it's a sad state of affairs. I will never go back here. read more

What a fun vegan alternative! My kids thought the cheeseburger pizza was the best thing that's ever happened to them. The adults tried some of the more traditional toppings. Everything was excellent. Oh my gosh the chicken parmesan and the philly cheesesteak sandwich knocked my socks right off my dang feet! So impressed!

I purchased the multi-pack and had it shipped to me in Florida. I saw Kitchen 17 in a popular magazine and was eager to try the deep dish pizza as I hadn't had a great pizza since I went vegan 3 years ago. I must be honest, I was a bit disappointed in the flavor of several of the pizzas. The presentation was amazing but the taste was horrible. I even tried baking the pizza on a pizza stone and it did not make it any better. I didn't want to leave a negative review because the shipping and presentation was great! It really was just the flavor was horrible. read more

The bad energy of this restaurant is so palpable you notice it as soon as you approach the door. My partner and I decided to give it a shot anyways and walked in. A few people sat at the small crammed tables against the walls while two large tables by the windows were reserved. Most likely, everyone was wishing they could be closer to the windows since there's no a/c, the walls are painted black, and the music is super loud. We went to the counter and asked questions about the menu, which seemingly was inappropriate for us to do as we clearly inconvenienced FOH staff because they had to do actual work. Questions weren't answered and they didn't bother to ask the kitchen. At this point, we should have walked out, but I wanted to try the food and be optimistic it wasn't a reflection of this one employee. We sat down, unable to talk to one another cause music, which was turned up even louder. It truly seemed like the restaurant wanted to clear people out. The vibe was so god awful we decided to get our food to go. Upon leaving I almost fell from a massive water puddle by the trash cans, which was just sitting there with a sign to the side that I didn't initially see. It took me almost falling for the FOH staff to finally clean it up. When we got home to eat, I was expecting the food to be terrible, but it was actually really good. I only ate a couple bites since I had lost my appetite from the experience, but it was A+. Even though the food was good, I won't return. Kitchen 17 kills any opportunity for having a joyous time with friends and people you love with it's rude staff and dark ambience. What a shame. read more

Great vegan pizza! Sauce was delicious and crust was "buttery". Unfortunately we couldn't dine in because of covid.

We had the vegan Sicilian pizza and it was very good. Although, to be honest Sicilian should be square, but I will not hold it against them. FYI Chicago deep dish is served only on Wednesdays. I was excited to get a pizza from this place. Vegans don't get to eat deep dish every day. This place uses great ingredients, but deep dish pizza should involve a fair amount of cheese (or faux cheese). There was hardly any in the "traditional pizza" I ordered. There was a very thick layer of seitan and some marinara sauce, and sandwiched between the two, a VERY slight (I mean barely there) amount of faux cheese. I ate a few bites and had to quit. The excessive amount of seitan was overwhelming, and not in a good way. I had a bite of a friend's food recently who got Kitchen 17's mac and cheese pizza and that was good, so there's def good food to be found there. But don't order the traditional pizza unless you want an almost faux cheese-free experience with an overwhelming amount of seitan. read more

I had high hopes for this place given the great reviews, but wasn't too impressed. I ordered a couple items to-go for my first order earlier this month: - chips and guacamole ($4): this was comprised of chips, guacamole, and regular salsa. First, it did not come with sour cream, as advertised on their online menu. Second, it came with WAY more chips than available dip (there would have been way too many chips even if I had gotten the advertised sour cream). Reframed, there was way too little dip for the amount of chips! Third, guac was a little brown - it clearly was not that fresh. Fourth, the salsa just ok & a little more watery than I prefer. It didn't taste very fresh. Fifth, and lastly, the chips were either a little stale or a little too thick, or both. I definitely would never order this again. - buffalo wing wrap ($6): this was quite good and very flavorful. A little too spicy for me, but I'm a wimp. I kind of expected the fake meat to be heated up rather than cold, so I think I'd request that next time. The guy who rang me up at the counter was very friendly. I thought it was a little odd that he asked me if I wanted a bag since the food came in 2 separate boxes and it was just starting to rain outside, but props to him for being environmentally conscious. On the other hand, both boxes were made of styrofoam :/ One final detail -- when I got home and saw the Square receipt in my email inbox, I noticed I was charged for a beverage tax. First, I did not know that Chicago had a beverage tax. But, more importantly, I did not order a beverage! It's only 1%, so it's really nothing, but I still found it surprising & rude on principle. Be more careful or fix your system! Although my appetizer was total crap, I still would go back consider my main entree was good and the other reviews are great. read more
