But a year ago I took the drivers test and barely passed. He gave me an exam, put me on the slit lamp, and seemed not to worry. I October I was having blurry vission. I came back and once again Dr. Spenser gave me an exam including the slit lamp. He told me my contacts were dirty and to buy a different solution. Never mentioned the word cataracts. It helped a bit but by February I could barely see street signs. I called and his receptionist told me to see an opthomologist. After five minutes the opthomologist said I has bad cataracts. The surgeon examined me two weeks later and said the same thing. I had cataract surgery in June and now I see 20/30 without glasses. Due to Covid they ask everyone to wait in the car. As I walked there they were nice enough to let me wait inside because it was a really hot day the day of my appointment. Here's where I'm like eh I probably won't come back here. I struggle with my insurance and eye doctors. They all assume I have "Davis" which I do..but I pay additional for blue cross blue shields vision plan. No one has ever heard of this and they question me on it. When I called for my appointment the receptionist said oh I found you under Davis vision. Sigh..ok. When I filled out my paperwork and brought both of my insurance cards I was told no I already got you. When checking out I was told I have a co pay, I stated I do not with my blue cross blue shield. She then started explaining I only don't have a copay if I don't get glasses or contacts...this didn't sound right to me but I wasn't going to argue as my prescription didn't change and I've been wearing my glasses more so than my contacts. I got home and looked up my insurance information..I definitely do not have a copay. I recommend knowing your insurance if you use this doctor.

I opted for standard lenses. With these standard lens I did not need laser surgery to adjust the quality of my vision. I had some luck that I achieved this quality of restored vision. I add that Dr. Scott Kirk provided Radial Keratotomy in the summer of 1996. Although this is an dated surgery, anyone with a past RK should consider cataract surgery at the Kirk Eye Center because they provide light adjustable lenses for patients who seek greater likely outcome for seeing 2020 and that LASIK is not recommended for patients with past RK experience. Also, since I have had decades of eye care at K.E.C. River Forest, IL, I am certain that I'll continue to have great health care at their facility, here, I am met with a well organized staff capable of delivering care. I would like to add that they have added to ther staff young talented ophthalmologist and I hope they consider advancing to eye surgery.

I always thought of them as completely trustworthy, but recently they performed magic for me. TLDR: Hiral Patel gave me the best prescription I've had in almost two decades and Viviana Cano eased my anxiety over switching back to contact lenses after almost three decades of wearing only glasses. Now, all the extra details. Last year, my vision was so bad that I applied for blind disability. My mom and dad insisted that I come home and go to Kirk for a definitive evaluation. Five hours into the appointment, my future was bleak. The final recommendation, a week later, was surgery. My parents were totally ready and willing to pay for it, but I hate spending their money and put it off put if off put it off. I'm going to skip the specifics on the stuff about the bad diabetic protocol prescribed by my primary and how I ginned up the courage to change my own insulin dosage and how that probably saved my life and jump right to the day when a friend told me that her eyes didn't track together and she didn't see in stereo but wearing hard lenses gave her real vision for several hours a day. I immediately thought "let's get me over to Kirk and ask them about this." I was almost too shy to make the appointment, but the possibility of being able to drive again was too seductive. I called and set the time. I got there an hour early. David and I sat in the parking lot eating precut watermelon from Jewel (same plaza.) I was nervous. Doctor Patel strutted to the lobby to grab me for my examination and I was immediately filled with confidence. Anyone with that much personal security must be great at their job. I was not disappointed. "I want this to work," I offered. She smiled quickly and told me "remember to blink." I'm drowning you in minutiae. Let me bring this to a 10/10 conclusion: my vision is now corrected to 20/20 (I can read a sign from three blocks away!) and the lenses correct my astigmatism and keep my eyes in line. Now: Viviana. When I asked her to take a selfie that she liked (for me to use in this review,) she is so humble that she didn't immediately understand that it was to praise and appreciate her. She's extremely deserving of both. I came in two days after my miracle exam, not sure if I had successfully removed the acuvue daily lens from my right eye. She took a peek and confirmed that it was out, and placed an order for some more trial lenses so that I could make sure it was the right fit for me. I came in again today with both lenses still in and significant anxiety over that fact. Today, Viviana removed the lenses and gave me a comforting tutorial that I think might help (and then listened patiently and socially awkward me gave her an unsolicited lesson on trafficking of vulnerable groups in rural areas that flowed from my rant against Loyola facepalm. Patient and kind and so helpful! Thank you. Infinity/ infinity

That said, the follow-up required several visits, which felt a bit drawn out. In hindsight, I probably would have benefited from seeing an ophthalmologist sooner--someone who specializes in that type of condition. The clinic does seem busy, especially on the medical side, which usually speaks to its reputation. While I didn't personally see an ophthalmologist here, there was clearly steady demand for their services. One downside: the pricing on glasses felt high, similar to what you'd see at larger chain retailers. It's worth comparing prices elsewhere before making a purchase. For perspective, I later visited University Ophthalmology Associates (UOA) on Old Orchard Rd in Skokie for cataract care, and had a very positive experience there. Overall, this clinic is a convenient option and I'd consider coming back, particularly for general eye care. Just keep in mind--if you're dealing with something more complex, it may be worth exploring specialist care early and checking pricing before committing.

He knows his stuff and it seems as if he has done this many times especially with more difficult prescription to determine. I would suggest for anyone to always ask for their prescription in case they need for future reference. It would a waste of your time or any doctor's time if you would revisit to pick this up. Remember this. It seems as if the office has frozen in time and so it is hard to overlook this. The office has older equipment although he is able to figure things out quickly and accurately. He might have been better to work for a large chain store since the paper and system processes are more in place since this is where the office lacks. Best to call the office back every few days to check on them if you are getting new glass lenses or contacts from them. It takes quite a long time to get replacement contacts if you have a more difficult prescription to fill. I would suggest to have a bunch of good questions prepared before visiting so you can have the best experience with them. I would double check on pricing before committing to any purchase as a good consumer would do. It seems as if he keeps mentioning that vendors and the manufacturers are charging more which could reflect his cost and our cost. I haven't checked out my cost since I need to refer to insurance to verify what have been charged appropriately. I didn't get any billing paperwork from the office and so I have to look into it. The place isn't as organized in the back room or in the tight exam room area as I would like it to be although I might be just too particular. I would just follow up by phone calls every couple of days to kindly ask to get status on the whereabouts of your things you are waiting for. They are nice people. It seems that the doctor knows where most things are located and not the person answering the calls which is rather time wasting for the doctor to answer calls. It's a mere suggestion to have the workers to know more instead of always referring to the doctor although who am I to place any judgement. I would still recommend the doctor to do the exam part and it is best to spend extra time to do some comparative shopping before committing to a purchase.
