It's not easy to find decent food in Vernon, and while this wasn't terrible, the search continues…read more The Millennial Chum and I stopped by here for lunch this past Saturday after building up an appetite ziplining at nearby Mountain Creek. The menu was large with almost a diner-like quality (not a bad thing), and I was in the mood for some avocado toast specifically. It was a very nice day and I would have been perfectly fine with the outdoor seating situation off to the side of the building, but the Millennial Chum was very taken by the interior and declared we had to seat in there. It was fine - it looked like it had been recently renovated/done, but also had a dash of quaint country store to it. Not to an extreme level like a Cracker Barrel, but it's a pleasant vibe. I was kind of impressed that they had literally the most basic avocado toast option possible - literally just avocado on toast. In this day and age, I usually have to navigate around some weird crap (my limit is maybe some feta or pepper flakes, but once you start putting basically an entirely different meal on it, I'm out), so it was refreshing from that perspective. That said, this really should be an avocado mash - per the attached picture, they just chopped up pieces of browning avocado with no seasoning whatsoever, which I could easily make at home. It's extremely rare for me to add seasoning, but as soon as I saw this, I doused it with pepper. A rare instance of this being a little TOO basic. But they have the right idea. Honestly, I didn't like the strawberry pancakes. I thought they tasted artificial and not good at all. I had a few bites that were heavily centered on the strawberries, but the strawberries weren't ripe yet so they weren't juicy/flavorful. For what it's worth though, the Millennial Chum DID like them and hosed most of them down on my behalf, so maybe it's just a personal preference issue. Like a diner, the portions here are gigantic - huge points for that. Even though I was pretty tepid overall on the avocado toast, it's a portion that was arguably twice as large if not more than the serving you'd get at a bougie cafe in Jersey City or something. And in line with that, the price point is pretty amazing as well. We got a ton of food here and split a bill that I think ended up hovering around $30; really not bad. The service was okay. Our waitress was nice and we ordered/received our food promptly, but it did take a bit of time to locate her again to obtain the check. Not a huge deal though. This was okay. And given where you are, that's probably good enough.

So here's my "Piste rating" for the two courses at Hawks Nest ;) Usually when restaurants have a monopoly on your choices, they underperform because they're not incentivized to do exceed expectations...Hawk's Nest IS DIFFERENT...they actually try, which is why I'll give them a 4/5 in the review but a 3/5 on Yelp...but for the area, solid 4/5! The waitress walked us through the menu and the specials, as well as shared with us about her quitting smoking, but that didn't occur as an overshare, but she wanted us to apologize for her antsy nature. Out there, it was more endearing because she wanted to let us know that she's committed to doing her best, and I appreciated that! The drinks were tasty but certainly not strong, maybe that's by design so we don't die on the slopes, but I could do with a bit more kick in my drink to make that Double Black Diamond course look like it was a Green haha! If you're looking for something similar to an Irish Coffee, I'd recommend the Shred Zee Gnar! We ordered a medium rare 48 Oz steak (one of the specials) with a side of the Brussels and Mash and it was actually enough to feed 2 grown men after a day on the slopes. It was cooked at a good temperature, with some sections being more medium than medium rare but that's fine. The calamari appetizer is interesting... it's not what you'd expect, let me just say that! It wasn't good, nor was it bad...it just wasn't like any calamari I've ever had. All in all, I'd recommend it...but I mean you don't have many choices, but I do appreciate that they TRY even when they don't have to...

We started with a crisp, perfectly dressed Caesar salad and the Arancini, which were golden-brown perfection and packed with flavor. For mains, the Chicken Parm on Foccacia (special) was tender and richly sauced, while the Cheesesteak offered a high-end, flavorful twist on a classic. Every dish was a knockout. Unfortunately, the service was mostly non-existent. We spent more time trying to find a server than we did actually eating. HOWEVER ... Go for the incredible food, but bring plenty of patience. Trust me when I say... the food is 100% worth the hassle.

They do a little of this, a little of that, nothing spectacular, including the limited beer selection on tap. The Underground is a different experience that is probably a victim of being underutilized in the area. Augmented darts, pool tables, shuffleboard and simulated golf all sound like a fun experience. Even though there was a miscommunication, the staff was more than accommodating and opened for us. My young's are both under 10 and had a blast. I would go to The Underground again next time I'm in the area.

As soon as we sat down, the staff brought over warm bread with a cheesy crust on top, simple but really good, and a nice way to settle in. I started with an Old Fashioned mocktail, which I have to admit just didn't work. After a couple of sips, I gave up on it. I stuck with the mocktail because I was taking medication for a cold, but honestly, I found myself wishing I had just ordered the real version. Once the French onion soup came out, things turned around quickly. It was exactly what I needed, rich, hot, and comforting in all the right ways. Our waiter checked in just enough without hovering, and the rest of the staff was just as attentive. It felt welcoming, whether people were staying at the resort or just coming in for dinner, which added to the relaxed atmosphere. For my main dish, I went with the burger cooked medium-rare, and it hit the mark. Juicy, full of flavor, and paired with crisp fries that were actually seasoned well. Between the quality of the food and the friendly service, the Crystal Tavern left a good impression. I'd definitely go back and try more of the menu next time.
