The man behind the desk gave me a free season pass!

10/10 vibes the crew here is epic. They just replaced the nope. Hell yeah Best day ever here.

This park was the most disappointing snow trip I have ever had. Payed 10.00 and gat a ticket that said park and play at your own risk. Nothing mention to me by the attendant that there were more fees to come. Then 10.00 a person after I payed and walked to the hill. I payed due to Granddaughters excitement. We went down the hill 6 times and was told to get out they are closing. We were not there more than an hour. No refund or even an apology. The hills were barely adequate for my 4 year old grand daughter. Totally a lame experience.

It seems like a pretty good metaphor for something. They (the signs and the local authorities enforcing them) threaten that tire chains are necessary during winter weather events (which was most certainly a thing that was happening during our trip), but they seem to give you a pass for AWD and snow tires. Bring chains if that's not what you're driving.

The silvertip day use area cost $5 to park. It can get very busy; you might have to park outsite day use area and walk in. Nice lake for kayaking and sup. Beware there are lots of water snakes. Less than 2 miles off of hwy 80, this PG&E-run reservoir is really convenient for a day trip from Sacramento as it's only an hour from Roseville. The nearby Lodgepole Campground (located on the south side of the lake from the boat launch) was shut down due to COVID-19, so the crowd at the Silver Tip Day Use/Boat Launch was small and reasonable when I visited. The day use area has several picnic benches above the shore that are shaded by trees, but the beach is unfortunately not large at all. This is definitely the type of day use area that will get crazy busy during non-COVID times and you'll want to come very early to claim a spot on the beach and get a nearby space for your car. There is a restroom (vault toilet) up at the parking lot and there are very few spots big enough for any type of small watercraft trailer. Parking is very limited so come early! If you're wanting privacy, you'll want to hoof it away from the boat launch and try to find a spot down the shoreline. Next time I'll be bringing my kayaks and paddling to a location away from the crowd. Happy Paddling!

This time there weren't any parking spaces in the lot. We went around twice, but no cigar. We ended up finding a place on the street across from the back entrance. We lucked out. I also love that it's not as busy as kings beach. This time it was packed, but we still found 2 great spots. One in the shade and another in the sun right there on the sand and steps away from the lake. They offer boat rentals: Pedal boats and canoes or kayaks, I wasn't close to tell, it was one or the other. They also have 2 lifeguards on duty. If you get the munchies or are thirsty thy have a snack-shack. Unfortunately they were out of hot dogs. And lastly they have pretty clean bathrooms. 2 stalls in one and a family bathroom. They also have tennis courts. And a Basketball court and play structure for the kiddos. If you want a picnic table you can reserve one or just arrive early. If you want pick of spots arrive early. If you want a parking spot luck out when someone leaves or arrive early. Summer time is a prime time to come. It's $12 per person during the summer. If you come before the 4th of July the snack-shack is closed, but it's free to enter and there is plenty of parking. They have a swimming area which the lifeguards patrol. It's pretty shallow near shore. If you bring your paddle board like many people do you can do this outside the swimming area. You are allowed to bring inflatables. Someone had a giant unicorn and another party had a giant round party float. I'd return, but I'd go earlier in the day if I come in the summer time to ensure we get a parking space. We arrived around 1pm and I believe it opens around 10 or 11am. So we weren't so late. There were just a lot of early birds.

And this place ranks as one of the better rest stops I've been to. This is none other than "Donner Summer Westbound - Nevada County". Located on westbound I-80 (which is Reno to Sacramento), this particular rest stop is located just a few miles west of Truckee and is actually part of the California State Department of Transportation. This place does offer ample parking with a sizable lot that is easily capable of accommodating all vehicle sizes. One great thing about this place is their dedicated restrooms. It is housed in a stone building which is much needed since the 7,000 ft elevation can bring very cold and harsh conditions from fall through spring. And I will say that I've been here a few times during December/January where the temperature can drop below 0°F so make sure to bring warm clothes if you choose to exit your vehicle. Finally, inside also houses two vending machines; one for snacks and the other for drinks. However, many people don't know a lot about the history that took place here back in the 1840's. Many of the settlers of the ill-fated Donner party had to resort to cannibalism to survive. Sadly, many of the died of the harsh inclement elements as well as lack of food on their journey. There is also a giant plaque on a boulder commemorating this moment in California's early history. You will also encounter a decent sized Indian totem in close proximity. Since I am a huge history buff, I enjoy actual sites where all of this transpired. Aside from all of that, the views here are incredible, especially for a rest stop. If you walk a little off the beaten path that has 100+ foot trees, a rocky/snowy hiking area, and even a small lake surrounded by plants and other foilage. During my most recent visit which was on Saturday 7/1/2023 at around 7:30pm, there was still a fairly decent amount of rock hard snow on the ground that was remnants of the late spring storms this area got. With that said and done, I am giving the "Donner Summer Westbound - Nevada County" an above average four-star rating.

They walked so many miles that their feet left bloody trails behind and probably half of the party parished. For the complete story watch The Donner Party: What really happened on Youtube from Mortician Caitlin Doughty. After doing some research of my own she explained it the best. I would recommend making a stop to take a little walk in the snow before it melts or take a leak. I mean when you have to go you have to go right and they're plenty of stalls!? When we visited the vending machines were not filled in case you're looking for a bite, they could have been re-stocking tho. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area!
