The hotel
Sam C.

I stayed here recently on a weeknight, and had a very nice stay. My room was updated, clean, and spacious. It had a deep bathtub and separate shower. It was also quiet. The staff was friendly and professional. There was s plenty of parking in a lot just outside the hotel. The location is not walking distance to any other restaurants or places you would want to go. The whiskey bar has a large selection of scotch whiskeys, and the bartender was knowledgeable of the selection. Breakfast was included, and it was a generous selection of cereals, fruit, juices and yogurts, and hot items such as eggs, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, beans, and puddings. The hot dishes were being prepared before us, so you did not get the sense that they had been sitting out for hours.

It's within easy walking distance of the Ness Islands in one direction, and the main part of town - shops and restaurants - in the other direction. I liked that it was a bit removed from "the bustle" of the city (if Inverness can ever be said to "bustle"), but close enough to get to without a car. Our room was in the "townhome" part of the hotel (not the main building, but the one across the parking lot), which was perfect. Our room was gigantic and super comfortable. My favorite thing was that the windows actually opened, which gave us a chance to enjoy the slight breeze and gave us a front-row seat to the church bells ringing down the way. The bed was huge and very comfortable. It was actually a little *too* comfortable; we ended up sleeping over 10 hours on our first night there! I woke up about five minutes before the front desk called to ask if we'd be needing housekeeping for the day. Oopsie! We didn't take advantage of room service or hit any of the property's restaurants/bars while we were there (we typically like to experience all a city has to offer when we travel, so while their menu looked inviting, we chose to try some of the places recommended by our taxi driver on the way into town, instead.) They did get bonus points for welcoming us to the hotel with two glasses of champagne - their way of congratulating us on our wedding anniversary. The shower looked modern, but it was kind of awkward to use, and it leaked all over the floor. They have a hair dryer (look in the desk if you can't find it elsewhere), as well as a mini putting green (stored in the closet; it's how you know you're in Scotland, I guess!) There's a TV we never used, and two comfy club chairs situated next to the windows. Check-in and check-out were fast, easy and friendly. They also went out of their way to protect us on that first day. Our taxi driver (super sweet girl named Michelle) was giving us all sorts of tips and advice on our way in, and after I mentioned my half-baked plan to rent bikes to ride out to Culloden, she dropped us off and headed towards a bike shop in town to get information on rentals. She came back to the hotel to tell us everything in person, and the front desk agent refused to tell her our room information, even though she (Michelle) kept insisting we were expecting her. This was the place that made us feel most comfortable, where we could relax after a long day of playing tourist, and where we'd definitely book again, if we're lucky enough to return to Inverness. If you're looking for a place to stay, give them a try!

The play area can get really busy at weekends and it is unsupervised so can be a wee bit hairy for gentle, sensitive children. The food is usual Brewer's Fayre reheated from frozen type of food. I've yet to eat a meal that I enjoyed. The chips are usually soggy, the lasagne was runny etc etc. Kid's meals are chicken nuggets and chips type of food although they do try to offer slightly healthier options of pasta and include vegetables. I never feel that it is a particularly clean kind of place. The highchairs are pretty grotty and there is a lot of food trampled into the floor around the play area. But, and it is a big but, there are very few places in Inverness that toddlers can play whilst grown ups eat and so sometimes you are forced to go.

For the purposes of this review, I'll be concentrating on the restaurant part of the complex,…read moreBrewer's Fayre, the reason being that all Travel Inns are generally almost identical. Brewer's Fayre offers good, reasonably priced food. Bangers and Mash for £6 kind of prices. It also features a 2 for £8 meal deal which is very, very good value. The food itself is nothing out of this world, but it is tasty enough that you feel you have had a very nice meal, and it hasn't cost you too much. The bar has a very good selection, and bar and waiting staff are very friendly and helpful, and also knowledgable around their menu. Being situated next to a Travel Inn means it can be very busy at times, and you may have to wait, but only if there's something on. The rest of the time, you should get a seat straight away.
