Took my friend to King's for her birthday yesterday evening. She just recently renewed her ID and there was a punch in the current one. Not expired, no punch through the picture, signature, or date. She went to grab a drink and the bartender was extremely rude and refused to serve her stating that because of the punch she "wasn't legally allowed to order drinks or even be inside the establishment." Skinny guy with long black hair. Two other bartenders were looking it up and stating that he was incorrect, but he said "whatever" and made us leave anyway. I asked for my tab which was for $11. I left a $2 tip despite not even finishing my drink and being kicked out. Checked my card to see they charged me $31 for 5 minutes inside the bar and terrible service. This whole ID thing wouldn't have been a huge deal if he would have just been a decent human about it but instead made a huge thing and treated my friend like crap on her birthday. Also, there was no one checking IDs to come into the bar or anything unless you walked up to the bar to ask for something. My friend is 29. It's not like we were being sneaky. And if the risk of having someone with a punched ID "in the establishment" is such a huge thing, maybe you should be doing your job and checking everyone's ID immediately to avoid this problem. But no. Dude just wanted something to be a dick about. See attached for the actual WA law on punched IDs and alcohol as well as my $31 dollar bar tab because apparently a $20 tip was deserved. 25 cent skeeball, crispy chicken wings, sides of ranch and spicy sauce, and a couple Seattle Dry ciders make for a fun Friday evening with your honey or friends. The spirit list is great with many options to choose from. There is a full bar if a cocktail suits you better. This is an unpretentious bar that anyone can swing by and feel comfortable. Wanna wear your sweat pants? No worries. Wanna wear a sequin skirt a fancy tank top, leather jacket, and your red high heels? Go for it. No one is going to look at you sideways here. The bar itself features dark lighting. Both the booths and tables throughout the space are wood. There are some taxidermy Elk heads on the wall. There's also a display case of old beer cans. It's a bit quirky. But I like that. The servers are dressed in "regular-ish" clothing. They are normally wearing an apron so you can distinguish who to ask a drink for if you are not seated at the bar. I like the down to earth vibe and the fact that this bar is centrally located in old Ballard so you can walk to everything from the Majestic Movie theatre, to the Tractor to catch a live band, or to The Walrus and the Carpenter for an oyster dinner. That is not to say that the bar food at Kings Hardware is not good. If you are in the mood for good pub food, they got you. Four stars overall? Really, Yelp? My bf and I came to Ballard to walk around and enjoy the sunny day. We bar hopped around a few places, wanting to enjoy a nice drink and conversation. We weren't hungry, just wanted a drink and maybe something small to munch on. We came to this place and went out to their outside seating. Boy, was it stuffy and humid... Didn't expect that being how we were technically outdoors. We grabbed a seat and were forgotten about... But our waitress was apologetic and we weren't upset or anything about it. It happens, we understand. Bf had the Midtown Mule and I had the Maxine... According to the waitress, the Midtown Mule was supposed to be very similar to the Moscow Mule... Yuck. It was disgusting. The cucumber and cardamom combo did not pair right. Drink was disgusting, but my Maxine (grapefruit vodka, ginger ale, lime) was refreshing and had great flavor. So we ordered the guacamole and chips just to have something to snack on even though we weren't hungry. The chips were nasty.. So thick and half assed... But the guacamole was the grossest part of it all. I could have gotten better guacamole out of a can. It had the oddest texture and no salt or flavor whatsoever. The salsa was blatantly from a jar... Yeah, I know it was our fault for ordering chips and guacamole at a non-Mexican place... But something decent would have been nice. At $7, it should be mediocre at best.. But it wasn't even that. It's a toss-up.. one night it's ridiculously fun meeting random people, and other nights it's the oh-so-diverse crowd of crappy and crappier. Food/drinks: 4 stars. If you have a large group for birthday celebrations or something along those lines, I strongly encourage you to make reservations well in advance. This place gets maddddd packed on the weekends, especially after dinner time / beginning of the usual time people go out. Came here a couple of times, and for this particular visit, it was in celebration for my friend's birthday. Overall, props to the wait staff!! They did an excellent job at managing the food/drink orders for the group, especially with people coming and going or just switching spots. Also, our water pitchers were constantly filled and our tables were cleaned on regularly basis. :D So thank you King's staff for your hard work! As for the place itself, the bar out front is dim and noisy and is more ideal for smaller groups. In the back, I find the patio to be more bright, warm and ideal for larger groups. Drinks here are the normal range (like $5 beer / $10+ for cocktails/shots) and are yummy! As for the food, it's ok. A few friends and I ordered: Chicken strips w/ fries, Irish Nachos, and the sliders. For the sliders and chicken strips, I found these to be a bit too salty for my taste. As for the Irish Nachos, these were basically fries drenched in various toppings on top. It was my first time trying food here and after seeing the happy faces of people eating their burgers, I will try the food again on the next visit. Ahhh yea......I like this place! Came by to grab a beer and a snack, we decided to sit in the back patio area. Its mostly covered that will provide shade in the summer, but will be still useful the rest of the year. Staff was quick to spot us and give us some menus and take our drink order. So we just got a few beers and some fries to share. Fries came out in a good sized pile, so you definitely get your money's worth! Delicious ranch dressing for dipping and we were good to go! I noticed a lot of the other tables got the nachos, so that seemed to be a hit. May have to check that out next time. I like the decor, a lot of woods, some mismatched old style school chairs thrown in as well. Inside has a good amount of space, Big Buck shooting video game, 2 skee ball units, good amount of tables and next door to a adjoining barber shop. Located on Ballard Ave, so its a good spot to stop by if you are bar hopping. Not sure what the night time crowd is like, but overall, it was a nice chill spot during a later afternoon visit. read more

It's a pub with a different kind of feel. For one, you can play Skee-ball in the back. For another, there are real, stuffed animals on the wall... everything from deer to moose to... bobcat? Happy hour was 5-7pm, and that, along with some satisfying burgers, made us pretty happy campers. You can also get sweet potato fries here, which made me excited, but they were on the soggy and salty side. Excitement dissipates. We also wanted to do Irish car bombs, but somehow, King's ran out of Bailey's. How does that happen? Our waiter felt bad and was nice enough to give us a drink on the house though. All the restaurants are busy these days with holiday parties, but we managed to get in to King's and enjoy a nice meal. My guy and I met our friend, and her new puppy, for dinner here. Happy hour happens 16:00-19:00, so we made it in time for discount beers and grub. We all ordered drinks, burgers, and some kind of fried potato (tots and fries, respectively). I enjoyed a bleu cheese "buffalo" burger: mmm, mmm, good! Fresh, grilled perfectly beef with some spicy house-made buffalo sauce and the zing of bleu cheese. Topped with a little onion and pickle. Amazing burgers, drinks, beer, games etc... I love the decor' too! The service is hit or miss, but I've had excellent service most of the time. Few of my favorite burgers on the Menu: buffalo burger (Frank's red hot sauce really makes the burger), After School Special (PB on a burger sounds gross, but oh so delicious!!!!!!!! you don't (and doesn't come) with cheese). I have to admit "I'm biased". Yes, this is a slanted review because any restaurant that will donate 100% of a nights earnings (oops, I mean profits) to benefit the Japanese earthquake victims deserves 5 stars. That said, I went there to run up the bill and still got a some great hot wings, cold beer, burger and fries for a reasonable price. I know, it was happy hour and it was great to be at a place that runs happy hour until 7pm so I had plenty of time to get a good deal to boot. Went here on a Monday for $.27 wing night. We got there early enough that it was also HH so we scored a deal on a pitcher. :) Wings were tasty, flavorful & good size. I ordered 8 & hubby ordered 12 & that was plenty for both of us when we ordered a side salad and some sweet potato fries to share. In hindsight just the fries would have been enough as there was enough there for 4 people to share. ( Minor pet peeve. They serve a wedge salad for $2 more than a side salad. A lot of restaurants do that & I think it's ridiculous. Whatev..) It was probably my bad for ordering wine... I figured it was a safe bet, but it came in a drink glass and was not tasty. This bar just feels dirty to me. Like there's an actual layer of dirt over everything. I like that there is ski ball here, and that there is an atm to get money to play ski ball. The French fries were decent, and my friend enjoyed her burger. If I can help it, I won't be back. Too many other nice bars in Ballard. King's was the second stop on our Ballard bar crawl, and we took advantage of the outdoor patio during the end of happy hour (4-7pm, even on weekends). The inside was pretty much empty, as everyone was taking advantage of the early summer sun out back! We shared a pitcher of a delicious sour beer (from some brewery based out of San Diego?) for $4 off and a huge basket of sweet potato fries ($5.95). My only complaint was that the fries were pretty burnt, but there were a few decent pieces in there! Will definitely return in the summer months. :) read more

Last Saturday, my friend got my party kicked out of kings. I don't disagree with the decision, and on the way out, I forgot my keys, wallet, and the tab, unfortunately. We were being rushed out and we were flustered and forgetting the tab was an honest mistake. I've been here at least 15 times and have never forgotten a tab here - or anywhere else for that matter. I went back the next morning to retrieve it and they initially said they didn't have them. I did find my location on my phone so I knew for a FACT they were there. I came back to check with the redhead manager (Sorsha?) and then she chews me out for 15 minutes about forgetting the tab. We paid the tab as soon as we were notified it wasn't closed, but she absolutely refused to accept my explanation that it was an honest mistake, and knowingly withheld my wallet and keys from me out of spite. I never left my table so I know for a fact they were there. They had to clean the table and serve people at it for the remainder of the night so I refuse to believe they didn't have them when I came to ask for them the next day. The lecturing about the tab and intentionally withholding of my wallet and phone over an honest mistake (which was corrected immediately!) was easily the most unprofessional experience I've ever had with a business. Having proof that my phone was at kings, I was prepared to get law enforcement involved to retrieve that and my wallet. Thankfully, they turned them over when I came back again 4 days later. They've lost a loyal customer for life over an immature and illegal overreaction to an honest mistake. read more

This place is basically the best place I have ever been to. I am consistently greeted with the warm smiles of the staff, and the delectable aromas that come from the kitchen. The food is top notch. I went to King's Hardware on a Friday night and it was a great time! Staff were all very nice. The front gets kind of crowded, but there is a bar in the back as well that's quicker to get drinks from. There's also a big area patio-like area in the back, which is awesome! They have skee ball here as well as an old jukebox filled with CDs. I really liked the vibes here! Tons of people out having a good time and looking for people to mingle with. It smelled like delicious fries, but I didn't end up getting any. Drinks were cheap too! All in all, I really enjoyed this bar! I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area. read more

It's a really cool place to go based on the laid back atmosphere. It's a casual kind of pub that you can have wings at and enjoy time with your friends but I'm hesitant to return. The hot wings were pretty good, had a good kick to it, and that night, the avocado wings was the special. It was good but it definitely needed a little bit more on seasoning...maybe adding cilantro or some kind of spice to add some "umph" to the flavor. From what I gather, they have a wing special each week! Service was pretty slow. The waitress came and gave each of our tables silverware, napkins and ONE plate (we had 4-5 people in each table). It was pretty irritating, considering we ordered about 100 wings and 3 appetizers between both tables. We eventually got plates for everyone after asking the waitress. read more

By far one of my favorite spots in Ballard. Having lived in Ballard for a few years now, King's Hardware is a regular spot for a drink, food, or a couple rounds of Skee Ball or Big Buck Hunter. Atmosphere is laid back, everyone that works here is friendly and attentive. We're in hear nearly once a week for HH wings or a Sunday afternoon beverage... really helps that I can get a haircut next door and stop by King's while I wait. Some of the lower star reviews complain of rude service or dirtiness. First, I have never seen an issue with the staff, even when it's packed they're generally calm and polite and always on top of things. As far as cleanliness? It's a divey feeling all-american bar. Go grab a $15 cocktail down the street or in Belltown if you're not up with the vibe. read more

Came in here to get a drink with a co-worker that was in my area. Very friendly staff and the perfect place, in general, to meet up with friends to grab a drink. They have 25 cent ski ball here which is pretty cool, the drinks are reasonably priced and the patio section is great! Plus you're right in the heart of Ballard. I didn't get to try the food here but it smelled delicious. My friend told me the wings here are great so I plan to come back and try them for sure. They give you a pretty cool postcard with your receipt that I plan on sending to my family back home in Texas. All in all this a great spot in Ballard. read more

I love Kings! I've been here several times but am especially impressed with their COVID set-up. They take your temperature, have removed all menus, and just have you scan your phone - and have spaced out tables on a way that is more than comfortable for customers to feel they are 6+ ft from other tables.
