*If you are in the service industry, it's your job to remain polite and professional, sometimes in unfavorable circumstances. If this is a difficult concept to grasp - then this clearly isn't the job for you.
*Two male bartenders the night of my friends wedding, were beyond some of the rudest, and most pompous individuals I have ever encountered as a bar patron - and even as a bartender of 14 years myself, I have never experienced that kind of disrespect.
Located in a gorgeous area close to Ballard, we walked down to King's for a few drinks after the reception. With everyone in high spirits from the wedding, were thrilled to be in such a beautiful part of the country and in such an awesome going out spot on this quaint little strip.
When we got to Kings it was packed and we ordered a round of drinks. Everyone started separate tabs, and I'm proud to say as someone who's been in the service industry for so many years, my friends are excellent tippers and are the kind of people that are fun and easy to serve. We played some skee ball and discovered shortly after, that unfortunately this would be the coolest thing about this bar.
One of the male bartenders yelled at one of my friends for ordering a water -- okay let's be honest - lol we all know how highly annoying that can be, especially on a busy night but let's get real - it's a part of your job and you just smile and hope they compensate you for it. (My friends always do.) And it's not like that was the only thing she ordered - she had a cocktail in hand too. So apparently this bartender was so rude to her that she asked him if she had done something wrong, and his response was "if you're going to sit at the bar you need to order drinks that cost money not water," rolled his eyes and walked away! He apparently didn't know that she had already racked up a $120 tab by then.
So at this point word gets around that this guy is clearly just a total jerk, so we all decide we're going elsewhere. In the hustle and bustle, one of my lady friends accidentally left her card at the bar. The next morning, she called to see if her boyfriend could come pick it up for her but there was no answer. So her boyfriend decided to go ahead and drive 30 mins down there for her anyway. He gets down to the bar and politely asks (one of the nicest guys I know) if he can pick up his girls card. The bartender is extremely rude about it and states that it's against policy, and insinuates that he's a total idiot for even asking. *I get this this policy and respect that you're doing it for their protection - but there's a way to handle it politely. Wtf is wrong with your staff that it's incapable of just being friendly and professional to your paying customers? I don't get it.... Unacceptable.
So the following morning my lady friend who left her card goes down to the bar herself. We were all flying out that day back to our homes across the country. The bar wasn't open for about 10 more mins but she could see people inside so she knocked on the door. The male bartender came to the front door and yelled at her through the glass "WHAT DO YOU WANT LADY!?" Startled at his approach she said she left her card there and needed to pick it up before her flight home. Through the glass he goes "I'm really busy. Come back in an hour. I have alot of SHIT to do." She said she couldn't - that they were catching a plane shortly. He rolled his eyes and stomped off angrily. He finally let her in and sarcastically goes "So you're flying home huh? Goodluck with wherever that is... Oh and there's a gratuity for cards left over night, sorry about your day LADY," and walked away. She told me she had planned on tipping more for the inconvenience but that this guy was so unbelievably rude that she just signed it and left. ($6 tab btw).
That being said - we DID have a great time the night after the reception - but I hate to say it was NOT due to good service or the attitude of your staff. Under different circumstances we would have complained that night, but no one wanted to make a scene and ruin Christmas.
We will be returning to this same general area in a few months for a birthday event, and the birthday girl lives very close to Ballard. Let's just say this place will never receive my business again, nor the 30+ of my friends who live in the Seattle area. A lot can be justified in the service industry - but rude, self-entitled, and arrogance aren't among them. read more
