I want to start by saying that I saw some of the negative reviews & I'm astounded at what they're…read moredescribing because it is the complete opposite of all of my experiences with Cascade Heights. Of course, some of them happened during COVID when things were CRAZY at all vets! That has to be taken into consideration. But there are a few that are more recent & those really astonish me. I was taken on as a new "client" several years ago after deciding that I didn't want to use Lien Animal Clinic any longer (after 20 years) because it had been purchased by a corporation & went downhill. I turned to Cascade because it's owned by one of Lien's former vets, Dr. Paulson & the former owners, Dr. Tim Kraabel & his wife. Dr. Tim Kraable was the vet who saw my dogs at Lien. (I always like having one vet who sees my dogs so that we have a solid relationship which facilitates clear & honest communication.) His son, Geoff Kraabel, works at Cascade & is my dogs' vet. I only see or talk to him and/or Dr. Paulson if he is unavailable or if she knows more about something than him. Further, a bunch of Lien's former staff work there & some of them had treated one of my dogs for more than a month when she had a big open wound. They are all AMAZING! And Dr. Kraabel in particular who has seen me through one of my dogs with whom he bonded instantly on his first visit and who connected with me as well, even though we could only talk on the phone at that time. Since then he helped that dog & I when he was diagnosed with a horrible cancer for which there was nothing that could be done. He was so supportive & genuinely heartbroken over what was happening. He also helped me tremendously with my other dog who was dealing with a neurological disease & was getting acupuncture from Kingdom of Basil & in home treatment from a physical therapist to manage it. He supported that effort & was always ready to help if I needed anything from him. After several years of managing the disease in that fashion, the physical therapist discovered that she had swollen lymph nodes & we all realized that she had lymphoma & likely didn't have long to live. He agreed w/my suggestion for us all to work together on what she was going to need until her time came. So, it was myself, Dr. Kraabel, the two acupuncturists & the physical therapist who got her and I through that VERY rough time, especially the morning that I woke up to find that she couldn't even get up to walk outside to go potty & that she was in terrible pain. (She was about 95 lbs. & luckily I had the Help Me Up harness on her that I could use, even though she didn't like it.) Dr. Kraabel responded immediately to my call & together with input from the PT we figured out a plan of action for the short term while discussing what it likely meant so we could prepare for the future. Within a week or so of that incident, it was clear that her time had come because her body just gave out on her even though her spirit wasn't ready to go. And she did go very peacefully with me holding her & the PT, her dog sitter & other friends who loved her with her, as well as my "newer" dog. The card & messages I got from Cascade were lovely & when I next came in for a visit with my "newer" dog, I was also embraced with support & care by everyone I encountered at Cascade. As for my "newer dog", he was a rescue from Eastern WA who had clearly had almost no veterinary contact except when he was at the rescue before I adopted him. He was VERY hyper & Dr. Kraabel was very patient & kind in learning how best to deal with him. We put together a way to manage his ADD that doesn't have him zombied out & Dr. Kraabel helps me manage his incurable eye disease. He has continued to be a fantastic vet with whom I can have frank conversations that are respectful & I continue to receive great care whenever I bring him in. I've also never had one instance when I felt that I was being tricked into doing something that was unnecessary in any way. We always have discussions about actions that may or may not need to be taken including the pros & cons, as well as whether the cost is worth it. That's what I want from my vet. Further, everyone who I have referred to them has reported back to me that they're very glad to have found Cascade Heights. I can NOT say enough great things about them! And in particular Dr. Kraabel, as well as Dr. Paulson.

WARNING This practice sells expired food at the front desk. When concerns are raised, expect to be…read moregaslit and lied to rather than given a straightforward answer. I was also called "aggressive" for advocating for myself and my pet and asking legitimate questions about his care. Advocating for your pet should not be treated as a character flaw. Ask questions, check expiration dates, and pay attention to how you are treated when you speak up. My most concerning experience with this veterinary practice was how Dr. Paulson treated me as a Black woman when I advocated for myself. During our conversation, Dr. Paulson called me "aggressive." I directly explained to her that using the word "aggressive" toward a Black woman is not a neutral choice. That word has a long history of being used to stereotype and undermine Black women when we are assertive, frustrated, or stand up for ourselves. Her response was essentially, "My kids have Black friends." That response was incredibly dismissive. Having Black friends does not address the concern I was raising about why I found her characterization of me as "aggressive" racially loaded and inappropriate. And I wasn't upset for no reason. While one of my cats was dying, I received spoiled/rotten food from this practice and was asked to try that food. I also had to repeatedly follow up about blood work and struggled to reach anyone when I called. There were times I had to call five or six times and repeatedly leave messages before getting through to someone. I also experienced billing issues and believe I was overcharged. After my cat passed away, I had a credit remaining on my account that I used toward his cremation. After these experiences, I left a negative review describing my concerns, including the practice's AI-assisted phone system and how difficult it was to communicate with the office. I then requested written confirmation after I was told I should no longer bring my pets there. Dr. Paulson subsequently sent me an email confirming that they were ending our veterinary relationship. The email specifically cited my concerns about the front office staff and my continued dissatisfaction with their AI-assisted phone system, stating that they no longer believed there was the necessary "foundation of trust" to continue providing care. So to be clear: I raised concerns about my pets' care and communication, left an honest review, advocated for myself as a Black woman, and Dr. Paulson called me "aggressive." The practice then terminated our veterinary relationship. I am not saying veterinary practices have to agree with every client. I am saying that Black clients should be able to advocate for their animals without being characterized through racialized stereotypes. If you are an ally to the BIPOC community, I would seriously reconsider supporting this practice. And if you have a seriously ill animal, I would also think carefully about whether you are comfortable relying on a practice where reaching a person may require multiple calls and where I personally experienced receiving spoiled food during one of the most difficult periods of my cat's illness. This is my personal experience with this practice, and I am sharing it so other pet owners can make an informed decision.

Dr. Walker's in-home care was ideal for my cat, as veterinary office visits were very stressful for her, especially as she grew older. Dr. Walker utilizes multiple integrative medicine modalities and always allowed my cat to to tell her what she was interested (or not interested!) in receiving that day. She is incredibly knowledgeable in multiple hands-on treatments, current research, supportive devices, supplements, and herbs. My cat grew to love Dr. Walker tremendously. When she was recently experiencing acute medical issues and received new complex diagnoses that would have interfered with the care of her other chronic conditions, Dr. Walker was very communicative with me and helped support the decision-making process to transition my sweet 16.5 year old girl. When the day came (only a little over a week ago now), my husband and I could not have been more grateful to have Dr. Walker helping her transition in the comfort of our home. The process was so gentle and peaceful, and I know it's partly due to the amazing relationship that Dr. Walker had with all of us, especially my cat trusting her to be the person helping her. I will remember Dr. Walker's kind and compassionate presence, and the way that she supported us through a very difficult 2.5 years for the rest of my life. I can't stop thinking about how perfect the day that my cat crossed the rainbow bridge was and we couldn't have done it without Dr. Walker. She's truly a gem and I highly recommend her care.
