The site is spread out and will require some hiking if you would like to see the entire trail. I believe it was 5 to 7 miles on foot to see everything. The visit was amazing and awe inspiring! I highly recommend any history buff to visit.

We were first introduced to Drift Away when Sydney came with her pack of dogs to give a…read morepresentation to my son's elementary cub scout pack. Sydney was knowledgeable and poised and kept the boys engaged. At the end of the presentation, each boy got a short ride on the sled. It was easily one of the coolest events of the year. If you're looking for a group activity or enrichment event, don't hesitate. After that first visit, both my kids begged to visit the dogs in Central MA to experience a full dog sled adventure. We signed up for the 5-mile ride. If you choose to visit Drift Away, *do* confirm your meeting location. We showed up at the address on the website to find no one there. Because of the confusion with the locations, Sydney graciously offered to include a mini-mushing experience in addition to the sled ride, so each of us got to mush solo for a short distance with a small team of dogs--a very cool feeling to be by yourself on a sled with the dogs. The 5-mile ride consisted of one of Drift Away's mushers, Tessa, driving our sled while the kids and I rode in the seat and standing in mushing position. Being the old lady that I am, I thought I would enjoy sitting more, but it was absolutely exhilarating to stand and imagine the experience of mushing myself. I could easily imagine how one could get hooked. You really gain an appreciation of the dogs, their intelligence, and their capacity. Rutland State Park, where we took our ride, was beautiful and peaceful. I will admit to booking this adventure mostly at the kids' behest, but I thoroughly enjoyed it myself. Great for families and adults. Before and after the ride, we got to interact with the dogs and mushers. Sydney, Kiara, and Tessa are fantastic young women who clearly know their facts and love their dogs. The kids and I helped harness the dogs before the ride and feed the dogs after the ride, all while hearing stories of each of the dogs and learning bits of their personalities. Beyond the experience of the mushing and sled ride, we were very impressed with these entrepreneurial young women who started with an interest in dog sledding when they were just 10 years old, pursued their passion, and developed this women-run business to support the dogs. It was amazing experience and a pleasure to support such a dedicated and hard-working team.

There's a lot of interesting and good information, and I liked the people. But.... The first half of the tour is in an old mini bus. The bus has tiny windows, like 4" square, and no air circulation. No fans. No air conditioning. Today was nearly 90 out by 10 am, when our tour started, and temperatures inside the bus got so hot that stepping out felt cool! You don't travel far, and then they stop for 10 minutes to talk about what's out the window. It's brutal. Ironically, the travel distances are so slim most people could walk it. But, just sitting on the bus in the heat? Yuck. The second half is in an old shed where you learn about harvesting. Again, it could be interesting, but it's a good 10° hotter, even with the fans going, and it makes it hard to focus. Or even listen. Better weather would have helped. But, we had an old lady in our tour group nearly pass out, and the guide indicated that that was not uncommon. Heck, complimentary water would be nice. Waters are a dollar. The tour is fifteen. It's all cash only.

I purchased two tickets online on the day off our evening ghost tour provided by Ghost Tours of…read moreNewport. The meeting location was outside of the MainSail (a restaurant inside of the Newport Marriott on Americas Cup Ave). There was lots of seating around, so my husband and I found a cushy spot to wait for the group to gather. We saw your tour guide right away. She checked everyone in by asking to see confirmation emails and then gave us all small, reflective 'Ghost Tours of Newport' stickers to wear (she told us they also offered us ectoplasmic protection). Our tour guide was so prepared and offered us many entertaining stories about the history of the area, the city, and the notorious paranormal figures of Newport. She even had photos that she passed around for the group to look at before certain stops. She kept the group together and safe (crossing streets in Newport has some potential dangers - cobble stone streets and fast driving tourists behind the wheel). Our tour ended outside of Trinity Church (which offers some cool nighttime pictures btw) and that's where the group disbanded. Our tour guide offered to walk people back to the Marriott if any needed, which was really thoughtful and nice. While people were saying thank you and goodbye, I overheard a repeat customer tell her that she did a great job (as they'd taken the tour in the past with her). Note: If you decide to do walking tours like this one, please remember to tip your guides!

I always love being a…read moretourist in my area, so I thought I would book a ticket for myself on the Ghost Tours of Newport evening jaunt around the city. Having never been on one of these tours but always seeing them when out walking, I figured at best, it would be a new activity to recommend to friends and clients, and at worst, it's 90 minutes long and the cost of a cold brew and cookie. I'm so glad I went on the tour, because it was very engaging and enjoyable. The start point at the Marriott is easy to find and has very clean bathrooms (use before you go- no bathroom stops on the tour), and from there, the walk was a simple half mile with no sharp inclines or strenuous walking, making this ideal for guests of any mobility. I will say that comfy shoes are a must, as you are standing for the whole time, and there are cobblestones. Our Ghost Hostess with the Mostess, Kathy, was fantastic! It turns out she is very active in the Rhode Island theatre community, and we had a lot of mutual friends. I hope to share the stage with her one day. She kept the group interested in the stories, and you can tell she's definitely got lots of performance experience, which added to the overall fun of the night. The stories told were mostly from Newport's Golden Age of Piracy in the 1700s and 1800s. I did find the content very historical and interesting, however, due to the nature of some of the stories (real pirates, after all), I would recommend the tour for children ages 8-10 and up. I would absolutely add this to any Newport adventure, especially as we get into Spooky Season!
