Very beautiful area. After a brief safety video and briefing, we were given our rafting kit, loaded on buses, and brought up river to the raft slip, this was about a 30 minute trip north west. The raft trip ended across the street from where we started. An easy exit, we got out of the boat, returned our kit, and walked across the road to watch the video, and purchase souvenir photographs. We had an excellent day on the river during our 10 mile trip. My 14 year old son and I did the Zoar Gap trip which took most of the day with an hour break for lunch at a nice riverside picnic ground in the mountains. You can bring your own food( appropriately packaged) if you would like. They store it in a water proof bag and stow it on the raft. If there is even a hint of rain or you just don't want to get completely soaked, bring a three season jacket or rain coat. Also, you will be out on a river dress accordingly. NO open toed shoes! This includes flip- flops. You can rent shoes and wetsuits. If you have any medical issues like allergic reactions etc. I would either bring your own Epi Pen kit and medications with you, and stow it in the water proof bag, or possibly think about finding a less isolated outdoor experience. Be warned, white water rafting can be physically strenuous. The only issue I had was the lunch that was provided. Not that it was bad, it was well packaged and pre-made( not to order). If you have food allergies or don't like mayonnaise bring your own food. Zoar Outdoor is not really able to accommodate food allergies or pickey eaters. Mayonnaise was on every sandwich. I don't know why. They could just have provided packets on the side but they there were none available. My son hates mayonnaise so he only ate the chips, pickle, and cookies provided which got him through the remainder of the trip but not exactly a great lunch. One man we were with had a dairy allergy. I'm pretty sure he was not able to eat any of the food. I'm not sure why he didn't make sure a head of time if he could eat the food.I wish I had known the sandwiches had mayonnaise on them a head of time. Not a huge deal, we got over it. The trip was super fun! I would love to go again and will definitely choose Zoar Outdoor again.

Quiet spot in the winter with a few food items and good drip coffee (nothing fancy) and a fire place. Soups and sandwiches were good and gone before I thought to photograph but you've seen a sandwich before. Generally, on a quiet wintery day, this is a lovey place to linger. I imagine it's much busier in the summer with canoe and kayak rentals and the like... and there's way for space outside by the river and a fire pit but, again, it's winter as I'm writing this.... I'll have to do that in an update down the line, the summer bit. But for now.... Let's talk about pie. One chicken pot pie and one apple pie later and I can wholly say that this pie crust was the best I've had in memory. I don't like peas but if you're ordering in advance they'll put whatever you like in your pie (within reason, I'm assuming) and my chicken pot pie had potatoes and carrots and green beans. Delightful. Although, again, I could have just had the crust and been delighted. Also wonderful were rosemary scones and Christmas jam. I cut them in half and heated them in the toaster oven and then s good melty spread of some clotted cream (my own) and the jam and... chef's kiss. I also enjoyed the jam with some salty butter on a croissant for more than one breakfast over the holiday. Anyway the place it loaded with treats to grab and go and if you've got the time in advance, do call ahead and order something scrumptious to take to go.

Balconies stain glass…read moreand gargoyles The Merrick Library was opened in 1884 with money donated by William Banister and Pliny Merrick. The land that the library sits on was donated by Nancy Felton. The library is still a lovely and very cool place. Actually pretty small, it's one of those old buildings that look larger from the outside because back then aesthetics were as important as volume and libraries were more than just a place to hold books. The library definitely looks cool from the outside, with it's peaked and slate roof, rough sandstone blocks, to the really cool gargoyle rain spouts. The inside is also pretty amazing with intricate stain glass windows and a unique if somewhat cramped balcony. All kinds of interesting stuff inside like the original grandfather watchman clock, globe and antiques. A wonderful library that has a feel all it's own and typifies how libraries use to be built. A building to enjoy, admire and appreciate and not just a place to keep the books dry in the bad weather.
