A friend was coming over the other day and offered to bring food. After a short convo, we settled on King Mao. I'd never had food from there, so I was game. Ordering online was easy, and the prices didn't seem out of line. Of course, you have to try the food before you can tell if it was worth the price. As it turns out, the food was, indeed, worth its cost. I'd have liked a little more spicy heat in the sweet and sour soup, but the spice level of the pork with garlic sauce was spot on. If I had one real complaint it's that there was so much sauce on the entree that a lot of it ended up in the bag when they put the lid on the container. This is a travesty, because such tasty sauce belongs in my belly and not in the bag. So please, King Mao, if you want to give me extra sauce, put it in a separate container so the entree won't overflow. The sauce is too good to waste! The food was steaming hot even though it was delivered. The taste and quality was out of this world. There were no hidden, sky high delivery costs and it's extremely obvious that this is a family owned and operated restaurant in which the family is extremely proud of and in my opinion should be. Their prices, even during prime and peak hours are outstanding! Oh and the portion size is more than enough to have a second meal and sometimes even a third. I'm certain it sounds as if I'm being paid to write this review yet I am definitely not. I've been getting food from this place for a while and I got home with a recent order to find a big bug in the fried rice. Took all the food back because I felt nauseous about eating anything else or letting my family eat. Tried to get a full refund but the cooks came out and started being rude saying that in all their years never had an issue. Well I just wanted a refund to go and get dinner for my family elsewhere but they were so rude and even threw the money back at me. They were making it a bigger deal than it had to be and there were several other customers in the dining room listening. The house lo mein was saturated in soy sauce - super salty. General tso was way to sweet. Wings were ok- the breading was different than I'm used to. Everyone raves about this place and I've tried it twice now. The first time I got chow mein, steamed dumplings, and fried rice. The fried rice was different since it's a yellow color and didn't really have any flavor, but everything else was good. A friend got sweet and sour chicken and I think that was the best thing we got, but it all just didn't blow me away. The second time we tried it, I got dumplings again cause they're decent, but I wanted to try the beef and broccoli.... the sauce was so thick and the texture of the beef was so weird. I can't speak on the take out food sizes because I dined in. I felt that my portion size was commensurate with the amount I paid for it. I didn't have to wait terribly long either. I ordered the Honey Chicken with steamed rice and an egg roll. The honey chicken I've had at other restaurants (Redwood, I'm looking at you!) sometimes has a hard glaze over the meat. Some people might like it- this guy wasn't one of them. The glaze is so hard that it's like you're eating candied meat. That's NOT right! I loved the way they did it here. Even when the food cooled a bit, it still wasn't hard or difficult to chew. So they received two stars just for getting that part perfect. I'll start by saying I'm picky when it comes to any kind of Asian cuisine. My boyfriend is Thai and makes the best fried rice I've ever had so I'm spoiled by that. I'm not an onion fan at all, but can deal with them. The onions in this fried rice were hard too. Almost as if the onion wasn't cooked just chopped up and thrown in the rice. I ordered my son the sweet and sour chicken because being 4 that's all he'll eat from there. It was pretty good and also came with some steamed rice. The portion size of the chicken was overflowing. I also ordered some crab rangoon, which was pretty good and full of the filling. The reason I'll give this place 3 stars is because the delivery was super quick(I used the online method) and the price was extremely reasonable at a low $21, but it just wasn't all that good. I think I'll just stick to homemade which is always better. I probably won't eat here again just because it wasn't something I really enjoyed. I have been ordering from King Mao for the past year, and tonight the driver supposedly knocked and rang my doorbell- neither of these happened or if he knocked it had to of been the most silent knock ever but he DEFINITELY did not ring my doorbell. He then left with my food. I called the restaurant, and the guy that takes the orders argued with me telling me that the driver rang my doorbell and that I just didn't answer my door. We got the "buy 2 egg rolls get one free" deal, we also got an order of fried dumplings. Why, why, why is it so hard to find good Chinese food around here?! I guess I need to stop comparing everything in the Clarksville area to my oh so beautiful city of San Diego. The prices are very very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Hubs and I order, sweet and sour chicken, flied lice ( lol, I'm Asian had to do it ) wonton soup and chicken lo mien. Sweet and sour chicken was on point! So much chicken! Nice batter and great sauce! Fried rice was yellow...YELLOW! I get it, they used turmeric but when I see yellow fried rice the color just gives you a big question mark. Wonton soup was good. No complaints. Lo mien was alright. I was searching for chicken and was getting really skeptical as to where my chicken was only to find out they cut it the same way their noodles look ( HAHA ) good one King Mao you're very good at disguising your chicken!
