Gino at Sal's plumbing took care of me today. I called at 9:00, he was at my place by 12 and he…read morefound and fixed a pin hole leak that had flooded my kitchen and basement by 1:30. It's not just about how quick but also about listening to my concerns and how to tackle the problem. The leak was behind my kitchen wall and we talked through weather to try and find the leak from inside or going from outside. We eventually decided on outside due to how high the the leak might be coming from on the pipe. You see he said if we the leak was lower in the kitchen, then we could get it from inside but if it was higher, then we'd either have to yank out cabinets or break tile or we'd have to go out side anyway....decided that it was better to go from outside and not take a chance at having holes on both side of the wall....and wouldn't you know it...the leak was higher. Gino also provided information on whole house repiping and water softener options. Thanks guys...appreciate your quick and diligent response.

Scam? Or epic fail?…read more I called Sal's for what I thought would be a simple job: my kitchen sinks were draining slowly. Not terribly slowly, but if one sink was full and I pulled the plug, water would back up into the other sink while it was draining. I figured the drain needed to be snaked out. They sent two guys over on a Friday morning. They spent two hours monkeying around and making a lot of noise with their rooter, then told me they were unable to clear the drain, which was now completely stopped up. They told me they needed to tear up my drywall on the floor below and replace a pipe. They left me with standing water in both sinks, a kitchen that smelled like a sewer, and an estimate for further work totaling $1200. That afternoon I contacted another plumber, who came by on Monday morning. He had the drain cleared and working like new in 20 minutes. Sure enough, just like I'd expected, it was a simple job. Sal's guys only made things much worse than when they started, and tried to get me to pay for a big, unnecessary repair job. I was needlessly left without the use of my kitchen sinks or dishwasher for the entire weekend. I don't know if they were scamming me, or if they just didn't know what they were doing - but neither of those is a good answer. It's particularly appalling that a South Bay company would do this to a longtime South Bay homeowner. They must not be serious about staying in business.

If/when I ever need a plumber in the future, he'll definitely be my first call. Details: I was dealing with a leak in the water main buried under the concrete of my driveway. He was very responsive, answering the phone when called and fitting me into the schedule to evaluate the problem, gave me two viable options and clear rationale which was his recommendation. He was very willing to work with the leak detection guy I hired separately. He did the repair efficiently and effectively, starting with a small hole to minimize cutting of the existing driveway while he confirmed the actual location of the leak -- which turned out to be a bit off-center to where the leak detection guy had marked; Armando then made an appropriately sized saw cut, enabling access to make the repair while minimizing disruption to access to our garage during the repair. He did a solid job on the concrete patch when it was all done. He completed it in less than the time he allocated, and was a great communicator throughout the process. Finally and importantly, his estimate was one of the lowest of the 4 estimates I received and he stuck with the estimate.

Most concerning, after they came for the consultation and took measurements, I emailed them links to the items I planned to purchase to ask if they were okay. They replied, "Everything looks good." so I purchased them. The bathtub did fit and was put in place, but the enclosure panels did not. They then asked for full payment with no intention of installing the enclosure panels, which is why we requested a reduction in price. 2) They left without telling us and left BOTH DOORS of my garage open. We found our cat wandering the streets, thankfully not lost or dead, and no one broke in before we discovered the open doors. I gave them that feedback, and their reply was, "We didn't know you had a cat." I can only conclude based on their response that if you do not have pets, they think it is okay to leave your home open to the public. You get what you pay for. If you're willing to compromise your safety for a job done by people who clearly have zero respect for you, your safety, and your home, these are your guys.

It's too bad they had to bury their beautiful work. They promised one day of prep, one day of pipe pulling to replace my old clay pipe with new pipe, and one day for the city's inspection and their cleanup. Everything went according to plan, and I believe their price was reasonable. I waited for decades to take care of this problem because I thought that it would be enormously expensive to dig up the entire 30' from my house to the sidewalk. That would produce enough dirt to cover almost 1/2 of my front yard. I considered pipe lining, but I was concerned that I couldn't clear any future problems with a snake without damaging the lining. Instead of digging a major trench or lining the old drain, Mattucci dug a hole at each end of the old pipe and pulled the new pipe from hole to hole. The STD-17 pipe they used is both flexible for installation and very strong for a very long lifetime afterwards and no more roots. They discussed the plans ahead of time with the city senior inspector before beginning work, so there were no problems with the city permit or the final inspection. Tyler, Olsi and Matt had previously completed many pipe pulls similar to mine, so there were no hiccups or price increases. I was surprised how much effort they spent on the third day repacking the dirt and cleaning up their work. They had saved patches of grass before they initially dug the two holes and they put each patch back exactly where it came from. Except for the newly installed cleanouts, there was no sign of the extensive work they had performed during the previous three days. I was impressed and very happy with their work. For a complex job like this one, I would definitely go with Mattucci again.
