Assorted Katsu
Kristine L.

Fantastic spot for a quick Katsu fix. The restaurant is located a little northwest of downtown surrounded by a bunch of other Japanese goodies. As soon as we walked in, we were seated immediately. The restaurant is pretty small so it's hit or miss to get a seat. We ordered the assorted Katsu to share and WOW! The tempura was super light, crispy, and flaky. I loved that the plate comes with cabbage, radish, miso soup, rice and an array of sauces. We enjoyed crushing our sesame seeds and mixing it with the Katsu sauce for a perfect dip. The shrimp and cheese were my favorite! Overall, service was quick and the food was DELICIOUS. Highly recommend when you're in the area!

Assorted katsu, kings katsu

First off, lots of options for katsu on the menu. I've tried half of them and they're all delicious. We ended up ordering the cheese katsu and the kings katsu. The portions for these were huge ! They were both delicious & filling. I love the sauce that's over the kings katsu. As an appetizer we ordered the yam fries & were crispy and good, they come with the spicy mayo on the side. Also the pork Goyoza was also a good treat. The staff were so friendly and kind, definitely will be coming back :)

Rosu Katsu

We were attracted to this katsu place by the delicious smell and our sense of smell wasn't wrong. One of the best katsu I've tried in Calgary! It's a small place in the heart of Kensington. Due to the size of the place, it can get full really quick but it's very cozy. The staff was really helpful at the moment of explaining us the menu and their different options for food. They were polite and friendly at all times. The menu offers different types of katsu, don, curry, etc. We got our food really fast and the presentation was lovely. We got both the Rosu Katsu. It comes with a miso soup as an entrée. Flavourful, delicious and the sizes of food are good. We're definitely coming back for more katsu! Cons: they have a waiting list when they're completely full but sometimes the wait is not that long. We waited for less than 10 minutes.

Really good Katsu in the heart of Kensington. The place can be busy so if you come over the weekend be prepared to wait for a table. If you are a large group my suggestion is to come right at opening if you wanted to be seated together. The Katsu is a perfect texture and crispy. My husband ordered the combo and I ordered the pork tenderloin. (I turned my into a combo adding a drink and yam fries). The yam fries were perfect for 2 people and the server was honest and told us that which we appreciate. Everything was very yummy. The reason why it's 4 star and not 5 is the washrooms were a tad dirty. It needs a good clean. Usually if the washrooms are dirty, you question if the kitchen is like that.

We were craving katsu after a super busy morning with our daughter. I searched for a Katsu place and found Kim's Katsu, and I'm so glad I did! It is family friendly and kid friendly. They didn't offer us a booster seat for our daughter so I am not sure if they had some available. But that's okay for us, because my daughter actually wanted to sit on the big girl's chair. The restaurant is not too big, but has ample space for maybe 5 groups. We ordered assorted kastsu and Kings katsu combo. The presentation of the food was really good and appetizing. The servings are quite large so we had so much left overs. Everything tasted awesome especially the shrimp and kings katsu, so crispy and the breading was not overwhelming at all. I would definitely recommend Kim's Katsu to all family and friends. Bring your appetite, because for the price, the servings are quite large and very tasty!

Tiny nook

This place is a very small nook. I can see why it gets filled up quickly during peak hours and the staff sometimes have to turn customers away, especially 20 minutes before closing time. Hubby and I walked in on a quiet Sunday afternoon and were greeted warmly by the staff. I ordered the assorted katsu(hire(pork tenderloin), ebi (prawns), and cheese) which came with shredded cabbage, sesame seeds with a pestle, pickled radishes, rice, and miso soup. The katsu was delicious -- crispy and light panko on the outside and juicy on the inside. The shredded cabbage and pickles complemented the katsu perfectly. We will certainly be back!

So yummy and perfectly battered.

Katsu quality is the same as the one I ate in Japan. Love the soft and crisps battered. I like the pork and shrimp the most. Would highly recommend this place if you haven't tried it yet. I'm here visiting from California and I wish we have this place in SoCal. The service is attentive and sweet.

Authentic korean katsu spot I got the assorted katsu (shrimp, pork and cheese) I believe cheese katsu has pork in it. I ordered a side of curry because I like it with katsu. It wasn't as thick as I'd like it to be and it was a lot but still enjoyed it.

On the small side, Kim's fills up easily, but on a Sunday early afternoon it was quiet and we were able to get seated immediately for a late lunch. I ordered pork katsu, my wife tried the assorted katsu with pork, shrimp tempura, and cheese. Our meals were beautifully presented--they looked as pictured on the menu--delicious and very reasonably priced for the portion sizes. Service was prompt, efficient, and most of all, friendly. Highly recommended.

Kim's Katsu is calgarys newest katsu (deep fried breaded pork) place. I wouldn't say its authentic as its run by Koreans but the katsu is pretty good. Katsu usually comes in two cuts at most katsu places. Rosu (loin) and Hire (tenderloin). I generally get hire as its more tender and delicious. I recommend getting the Assorted or Hire Katsu. The assorted is such a great value as you pretty much get a whole hire katsu, 2 ebi (shrimp) katsu and 2 cheese katsu. If you order the ebi katsu on its own, you get 5 pieces, and the cheese also only comes with 4 on its own. So assorted is the best for $18.50. If its too much food, I recommend getting the hire katsu, cause its very good on its own, and better than the rosu. You can also get the King's Katsu, which is a HUGE serving of katsu. You seriously get 4x the normal portion, and its only $17.90. So if you care more about quantity than quality stick with the Kings, but if you want quality, go for the hire or assorted! I dont recommend the gyukatsu. As someone whose had this in Japan this was highly disappointing and does not resemble the gyukatsu at all. It was not bad taste wise, but for the price, its not worth it. Rice and salad is NOT unlimited which is sad, but i really did like the cabbage salad. The dressing was so refreshing!

Fish Katsu, with generous portions, and sweet potatoe fries

Katsu is such a delicious comfort food and Calgary has recently opened quite a few new Katsu places, such a Kim Katsu. We have been here a few times and like their breading which Is a bit on the lighter side. I also remember that at the restaurant you get sesame seed and the Japanese bowl to grind it fresh and eat it with you Katsu. :D However, we were lazy so we ordered delivery. We had pork and fish Katsu. The fish was way larger than the pork and was cooked perfectly (moist in the inside and crunchy on the outside). It also comes with sweet potatoe fries. The pork was good too. Each entrees comes with white rice, thinly slide cabbage and dressing, miso soup, and pickled veggies (tuskemono, radish Kimchee, and purple cabbage). It also comes with a sweet of sauces: Japanese bbq sauce (tonkatsu), a thousand island sauce, and a tartar sauce. Prices are around ~15 each so not bad. You get quite a lot of food.

Cheese Katsu

Finally a Korean Katsu place. I liked how they had many interesting varieties of Katsu and menu. As well as a decent filling set. The service was good. No outdoor just indoor. We ordered the Cheese Katsu which was good. Wish they explained the set to us because there were somethings we weren't sure what it was.

Rice was nasty and old. Service was bad and never asked us if we ate katsu before. I've ate and tried multiple best katsu places around the world. The Lady just demonstrated us how to crush the sesame seeds and put sauce right away with asking us first? service was really bad and not the japanese way of serving katsu. Heard they're speaking koreans and of course it's given on how they do their service. Definitely not coming back anymore and this place ain't worth the buck. Sorry for us for coming here. Bye felicia

Seated promptly - there are only four seats for the omakaze experience. You have a view of all the preparation of the food - sat right in front of the charcoal grill which emanated heat through the glass. The starts of the experience - the Hokkaido scallop and the chicken ass (only available on the omakaze experience and cannot be ordered in the regular dining room now). Never felt rushed, unlimited sides. Only thing that could be improved is difficulty hearing the server and chef over the background music and restaurant noise. Also some of the background music didn't seem to suit the environment (pretty sure I heard some Dr Dre!!)

Shokunin had a fun vibe upon entering. The staff were friendly and knew the menu. I thought food was a bit underwhelming. Nigiri were decent - some tasted better than others. Yakitori took a long time to make and were salty. Kale salad was the most disappointing bc I was told that it's refreshing and a fan favorite. The dressing was creamy and heavy, and the kale were whole bunches and not chopped up for ease of eating. Cocktail was also very mid and I had no desire to order a second one.

The interior of the restaurant has seen better days and they will be undergoing a major renovation from September 21st to 2025. The owner, Jay, was pleasant and attentive. He brought us a plate of complimentary spring rolls with sweet chili sauce. They were piping hot and super crunchy! Our family ordered three personal hot pots to warm us up on a cool autumn afternoon: spicy miso soup with lamb; Tom Yum soup with seafood; kimchi soup with beef. Our soups arrived in a timely fashion on top of individual burners (this was my first time seeing pink gel used as fuel) and they were intensely flavourful. My lamb was tender and the fish cakes, crab sticks, tofu, enoki/brown mushrooms, suey choy, and konjac vermicelli were deliciously satisfying and comforting. As usual, the boys and I had a taste of all three soup bases, and we decided that we liked them all! Just one thing of note: the soup tends to thicken halfway through your meal, so you might need to add a bit of hot water. We will certainly be back!
