Gran Caffè Gambrinus is a must-visit if you're in Naples. Open since 1860--before Naples was even…read moreofficially part of a unified Italy--the historic cafe has been serving guests for more than 165 years and has welcomed everyone from artists and writers to politicians and royalty. The beautifully preserved interior, with its marble, chandeliers, frescoes, and ornate details, is reason enough to stop in. We visited later in the evening and were pleasantly surprised to find no line or wait. It was a bit confusing at first. There's a few different areas to order and a separate line/section if you want to dine-in. We dined in and got seated at a table right away, but I imagine it's much busier during the day/peak hours. Though there is plenty of seating inside and outside. We ordered a variety of pastries, including the maritozzo con la panna, a sampler platter, sfogliatella, and the famous Delizia al Limone. The Delizia al Limone was what I ordered and was light, fresh, and perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. The lemon flavor was perfect and I was perfectly happy with my choice. The menu also includes coffee, espresso, cocktails, sandwiches, and other light bites. What impressed me most was how affordable everything was, especially considering the stunning setting and the café's reputation. I am from Hawaii though where everything is twice the price, so that may be subjective. While takeout is available, I'd recommend dining inside if you have the time. The atmosphere is part of the experience, and it's worth slowing down to appreciate the history and beautiful art inside their historic walls. Gran Caffè Gambrinus is absolutely worth adding to your Naples itinerary. Between the rich history, beautiful interiors, delicious pastries, and surprisingly reasonable prices, it's easy to see why it has remained one of Naples' most beloved institutions for well over a century.

We stopped by for an afternoon pick-me-up and drinks. The wait for indoor seating was longer, so we opted for the covered patio with a shorter wait. I walked in to tour around and took a peek in the dinning room, It's totally 2 different vibes from the grand interiors inside (like Angelina in Paris) vs casual outdoor patio which offers a front-row view of bustling Piazza Trieste e Trento. We had a nice time to wind down sipping Aperol Spritz along with the complimentary snacks and people watching.

When it comes to sfogiatelle, I have zero will power! And with all the miles I was walking daily, I told myself it was ok to indulge, can a,ways restrict calories when back in the states. I mean, I'm in Italy where the food is incredible and a big part of the experience. The outer shell of the layered clam shaped shell was nice and crispy; the ricotta cream flavored with orange citron inside was super creamy, slightly sweet and absolute perfection! In Italy it's common to have sfogiatelle and other pastry for breakfast but we always had sfogiatelle for dessert so I would get one for a late afternoon treat along with a cappuccino. Heavenly. My friends enjoyed croissants, cannoli and gelato, many went back daily for the gelato. They also serve meals - panini, pizza, salad, pasta - but we were there strictly for pastries and gelato.

The only issue is slow staff, communication could be a language barrier but it seems most restaurants are like this in Italy. We ordered food to eat at the restaurant and ordered food to go. No one ever brought out the food to go or told us about it. After waiting for so long I asked them about it and they said the to go food was ready inside. They will not notify you it's like you have to be a mind reader or be sure to inquire. Again it could be a language barrier but it would have been nice to let a client know their food is ready. Also once you order they don't check back on you. But all of Italy was like that. Still give them a five star review based on food.

Apparently they don't like Americans (Or they think all Americans are rich and they can rip us off) because we were charged double what my Italian cousin paid, we ordered two small cannolis and a small custard/parfait dessert it came out to €18. I wouldn't even be that upset if the food was good, but it was terrible. After meeting up with him in a little while later, I told him about my experience and he said let me go in and order the same thing and see how much I paid. It was half the amount it came out to nine euros same thing different nationalities and he spoken in Italian to them. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MIND YOUR MONEY HERE. Please spend your money right up the street towards Picasso Tasso there's a small gelato place that offers large pistachios cannolis for four euros I mentioned our experience to them and they knew exactly what we were talking about.
