There is so many pottery to choose from but I'd recommend having a rough idea of what you want to paint beforehand so you take less time selecting. I originally wanted to paint a matcha chawan bowl but they were sold out. I opted for a small bowl from the cheap pottery section (this is a section of slightly messed up pottery for a heavily discounted price). Prices in this section could range from $3-$20ish? Either way, it's on the low end and very affordable. You can choose 5 colors and you pay for the pottery piece you + the price of painting it (I believe we paid about $16-17 per person). So fun and we had a blast looking up painting inspiration from Pinterest and chatting while we finished our bowls! It takes about 2 weeks to get your item back so still waiting on mine but super excited to see how it came out! read more

Trying to set up an appointment with this woman was a nightmare, her website is completely archaic and confusing. Tried to schedule an appointment in person and was directed back to her website. My friend and I wanted to change things up... the dinner after work and straight to the hotel 3 nights a week was getting really monotonous. I love these kinds of activities where you can turn off your brain and decompress. I found place through LivingSocial for about $22 each. We painted balloons that got away. There were only 4 of us that night which was kinda nice because Sandy was able to give us more of her attention. This is a BYOB place so bring your adult beverage... it's just a lot more fun that way. I like that Sandy had hairdryers so we didn't have to wait 15-20 minutes for the paint to dry before painting the extra layers. I would definitely come back but maybe to paint one of the ceramic pieces. read more

My friends and I purchased the "Date Night" Groupon for this place and it was a deal! I paid $14 which was a value of $29. This covered $9 for studio time and $20 towards pottery. I wasn't 100% sure if we would have actually been "making" the pottery or just picking it out and painting it. (They offer both) This was my first time participating in this so I wasn't too sure. I probably could have asked when I called to make a reservation (a must for date night) but I guess I was just being lazy. Turns out for this particular night you picked out the pottery and painted it. You have to reserve another time to actually make the pottery, etc. I made reservations for a Thursday night 6pm, BYOB! We showed up and were shown our table for the night, given wine glasses and Sandy (The owner) even opened our wine for us! She explained how everything worked and showed us what we could pick from. Very nice and patient woman. You can tell by talking to her she takes pride in her work and genuinely ENJOYS it. It was really exciting getting to pick out the pottery...there were all kinds to choose from. You'll have to go for yourself to check out the options. I ended up picking a Wine Chiller and a small Fruit Bowl (decorative purposes). You can see them in the picture I'm going to post when I complete this review. We each picked our paint colors and shared from each others choices. From there on out it was smooth PAINTING. (And sipping some vino). The next couple hours were so fun. Sandy played music (Christmas, at the time) and we had some light chatter. At the end we gave her our finished pieces which she would later "fire" and call us to come pick up. Took about a week for things to be completed and mine turned out looking better than expected. I had a wonderful time and cannot wait to take some more friends on my next trip there. Attended the Yelp event this past Wednesday and we had a blast! If we would have come in alone we might have been a little apprehensive because there's just SO MUCH to look at, at such a small space (since there's work tables all over to produce your own masterpieces). The staff were very accommodating and we were quickly on our way to painting our greenware. They refilled paints as needed, suggested different methods, and offered ideas on tricky spots. We had already picked out our next piece we're going to go back to paint, so I would say this event was a winner. Special SHOUT OUT to Julia who did a fantastic job running her first event- getting treats & wine & snacks so we didn't have to eat any pottery. We scheduled a date night to have a beginner wheel pottery lesson. Sandy was amazing. She was very gracious and patient with us as we fumbled our way through making several pieces. She closes off the whole studio for date nights so that it's just you and let's you bring your adult beverage of choice. We got to make 5 pieces! I went here for a canvas night with my dear friend, Emily. The painting was a snapshot of the Pittsburgh skyline from the Roberto Clemente bridge. The entire process was really fun. Emily and I enjoyed sipping on wine and being creative. The canvases were not printed or anything - everyone had to freehand their creation. We were given a lot of freedom with painting our canvases, which was really nice. The staff were all extremely helpful and kind. My only complaint would be that the tables and easels were all squished together, so there wasn't much room to move around. I would definitely come back here for another painting night! read more

Stopped by this afternoon with my sisters. What a great afternoon! Sandy is a great host. We each picked out a piece of pottery to paint. She explained the process which is very simple. We each selected five colors to use. Sandy made us feel so welcome and answered any questions we had. She let us relax and enjoy company with each other while providing everything we needed for our visited. It has a large selection of pieces to paint. We painted two mugs and a jewelry box. What a neighborhood gem! Sandy was so welcoming and she's an amazing artist. There's a huge selection of pottery pieces to paint and I selected a unicorn bank for my niece. The music was great and the whole evening was really relaxing. Sandy even stayed open a little longer for me to finish painting the unicorn's tail when I realized I forgot. So, I'm always happy to support a local business over a chain, so I was so excited to check this place out! My friend and I both had living social deals, so I wasn't sure if that is why the lady working there seemed annoyed when we walked in, but she eventually warmed up to us and we had a nice night and were happy with our "masterpieces". I appreciated that they were prepared and ready to go with our wine drinking accessories. BYOB and painting = brilliant! So why only the 3 stars do you ask? Well when I called Tuesday night to see if they were still open so that I could pick up my pieces, the lady that picked up the phone, and I think the same one that was there the night we were, answered my question of "are you still open", with "well, yeah I picked up the phone" and a total attitude. You know the saying...fool me once, shame on you.. Call me crazy but I think someone working at any business should be kind to new and past customers. It's shame they don't seem to agree. :( I'm sure I will give them once more chance, but I hope this changes. read more

The owner really makes this place awesome. She is really helpful and encouraging and just plain nice. My friend and I bought the groupon for the date night and came ready to paint with a bottle of wine. We were actually the only ones there on a snowy night, so we definitely got a lot of attention. I picked out a platter and she got a cat. I wanted my platter to match some dishes that I have and I wasn't really sure what they looked like after a half bottle of wine. Sandy went online, looked up my dishes and showed me what they looked like so I was sure to be happy with what I was doing. She kept re-filling our paint, our glasses and suggesting brushes to use that would help make our items what we wanted. All in all, I could not have been happier with the experience and I am looking forward to going back to paint something for mother's day. read more

My first visit to Kiln N Time was earlier this week when I went with a group of other Yelpers for a Yelp event earlier this week thanks to Julia who organized the event! This locally owned business has been around for a long time and I'm so happy to finally know of its existence, but I'm sorry that I didn't know about it sooner! The owners, Sandy and Angela who are sisters, started this business together years ago and they and their staff were awesome! The pottery is already cast for you though I did see on their web site that they do offer classes in wheel throwing if you want to learn how to make your own pottery. Our event was one where we got to choose a piece of pre-cast pottery and then for a set price you also then chose 5 colors from the pallet of available colors and they provide the brushes and other tools necessary for you to create your own piece of pottery. After you finish your piece, they will glaze and fire the pieces for you which you can then pick up in a couple of weeks. They also offer canvas painting classes. I love the variety of offerings and that they will work with you if you are a group of 2 or 20 or somewhere in between! It's a really fantastic place to let your creative side come out and play! I love to support local small businesses, so I cannot wait to gather up some friends and go back for a night of creative fun! read more

It was fun making the pottery and I bought a gropoun for it so it was cheap. However the place is never open when it says it will be and when you email them they are extremely rude. I made my pottery in July of last year and have tried numerous times to pick it up. The owner called me last week and told me she was giving away my pottery if I didnt come get it, and said she was open all the times I came. When the lights are off and the doors are locked I assume a place is closed. I will not be reffering people here. read more

Attended a wonderful canvas painting class here this past weekend and had a wonderful time! The class is BYOB, which helps create a relaxed, fun atmosphere. The teacher was very warm and friendly, channeling Bob Ross as she walked us through a picture of Pittsburgh's downtown done in the style of Van Gogh's Starry Night. Such a cute idea - a painting I would definitely want to keep. The staff are very attentive, clearing away empty bottles and refilling our paints when needed - they really make it very easy! Stopped I here for the first time for a community event for Yelp. This will definitely not be my last stop. We painted pottery and were instructed on the basics of wiping down the pottery and generally how to paint, but the owner/workers left it up to our creative minds to have at it. Patrons are able to choose 5 colors and were suggested to choose differently from our friends so that we could swap =more colors! Great tip. As we painted the workers circulated changing rinse water and replenishing colors until we were finished. They were all very pleasant and eager to chat with us making us feel like we were sitting in someone's kitchen at home. (Though I think my mother would have made us paint in the basement!) They have TONS of art displayed and pottery is not their only gig. Canvas, wine glass, wheel throwing and hand building ceramics, etc. On their website is a calendar of events to see what they are doing for day/week. The ladies there were so accommodating and make the process easy so that any artist of any level will feel like they are a regular Picasso. Yes, my first stop...definitely not my last! read more

I went on a double date for date night using the groupon we all had purchased. None of us were really sure what to expect but we were excited. We called and made a reservation for 4 at 6:30. When we got there we had our own table set up and it was only us and one other couple for the night. Sandy, the owner was super helpful and friendly. She explained how everything worked to us. Over the course of the evening she would come back to refill our water and give us little tips. The BYOB aspect of the evening was great, as we were able to enjoy some wine and some cider we had bought around the corner at Arsenal. I found myself feeling great near the end of painting my piece! I picked out a small tray and my boyfriend picked out a dwarf. There were plenty of different pieces to pick in a variety of price ranges. Maybe someday I'll save up for one of those $60 salad bowls! After we left our pottery to fire, we were told we'd get a call to pick it up within the week. A few days later we learned our pottery was ready. I haven't seen mine yet as my friend picked it up for me but I'm sure it turned out great! read more

Very cool experience, we did a two hour pottery lesson and then returned a few weeks after to paint our pieces. Very fun but definitely not cheap. The price however is not what earned this place a 4 star review instead of a 5 star because you do learn and get a lot for what you pay for. My biggest deterrent to ever coming back is the fact that there is a cat on the premises. My boyfriend has a pretty bad allergy to cats and we didn't know there was a cat there whenever we booked the lesson. Even though the cat wasn't in the studio, it still affected him pretty severely. It would've been more fun had the cat not been in the studio and we will probably not come back because of it. Still a great experience though! read more

I planned a private party to do a canvas painting. We had a wonderful time. Ms. Simon greeted me outside and offered to help me carry my food items into the studio. She actually helped me carry my things in! I was very impressed! She made us all feel very comfortable and right at home. She had a staff member there to help us who is a known artist in Pittsburgh. Another awesome Yelp event and thanks to the Yelp intern, Julia, for planning! I had no idea that this place was in Lawrenceville and so glad I got to give it a try. I am not a very creative or crafty person but the owners and staff at Kiln N Time made this event very fun and laid back. Of course the glass of wine and tasty snacks before hand helped out. Our first step was to pick a pottery item that the staff had premade and there were some really neat items to choose from all ranging in price. I went with a two piece sugar holder and there were also vases, bowls of all sizes, and candle holders just to name a few. Each person got to pick up to 5 colors and they had a sample of what each color would look like once the item was fired in the kiln. I decided to use blue, gold, and red. What I liked was no directions about painting were given and you had complete freedom to paint however you would like. The staff would come around and get whatever you needed. Can't wait to see my piece in 14 days. I recommend this for a girls night out or a bachelorette party. read more

I had to hold an event for my internship to fundraise money. I contacted Sandy and she immediately was willing to help me. Sandy and another teacher, Lacey, had already set up the studio for all our guests before I arrived. I came with food and beverages and they began putting everything together for me. They conveniently had serving utensils and plates for some of my dishes. We had a few extra people show up to the event. Sandy and Lacey were SUPER accommodating in making sure everyone had a seat and they quickly set up new spots for the new people. The class itself is AWESOME! Sandy speaks in a microphone so everyone can hear her instructions. While many people were apprehensive about how their paintings were going to turn out, Sandy assured everyone that we were all going to do great and she really just boosted everyone's confidence. Sure enough all the paintings were beautiful!! I would highly recommend this for private events! everyone had so much fun!!!! it's a great way to do something fun and creative!! read more
