As the organizer of the event for my birthday, I arrived ten minutes early (with 3 others) to be respectful of our reservation (not realizing they didn't open yet). Staff was inside and the door was open. It was pouring rain so we came inside. A staff member told us we had to wait outside. I said "I am Alaina and have the reservation for 11am. Do we have to wait in the rain?" And they said yes. I was flabbergasted. This is Lawrenceville so you can't simply walk back to your car in the parking lot and wait. A much better response from a business who specialize in customer experience is "welcome! We're happy to have you celebrate your birthday with us. We open in 10 minutes so we're not quite ready for you yet, however, you're more than welcome to wait over *whatever place most appropriate* or if you want to brave the rain there is a coffee shop a few stores down if you want to grab a coffee first" That would have been the appropriate response. We went to Mix Candle Co and made a fun girls day out of it! We went to the Lawrenceville location and Josalin was so helpful in guiding us through the process which was pretty easy. First, we smelled all the scent offerings they had and wrote down the ones we liked (as a foodie, all my favorites were food related of course). Then we picked out which candle jars we wanted. We then went down our lists and picked our favorite scents and Josalin helped us choose ones that would go well together. Then we designed our candle labels, mixed the scented oils we wanted together, and then put them into the wax in the jars we picked out. The candles are ready in two hours so we went and got some treats in Lawrenceville and came back. The candles came out beautifully and smelled amazing. This was so much fun and a perfect way to make new memories with our family! I called day-of and asked if I needed to make an appointment and they said no, just come in anytime but at least an hour before they close. It takes about 45-minutes to go through this whole experience but I would budget at least an hour, especially if you're making a candle with someone else. I will note that the candles in store don't smell super strong which could be good for people who are sensitive to strong smells. The candle we made also isn't overbearing and you smell it gradually as it burns which is perfect for me! Sarah, our candle mixologist, was amazing and we will remember her as part of our memory and experience! She was so knowledgeable and helped us make the perfect candle. They have different size candle jars ranging from $25-$40. If you choose the smaller 8 oz candle for example, it's $25 and that includes your price of admission so to speak. So for $25, you're making a candle, creating memories with your friends and family, and doing a super fun activity. Super worth it in my opinion and a great gift idea or date night plan. We had a fun date night here recently! There are a ton of scents to smell and find your favorites, and then you work with a mixologist to pick three that would work well together. You get to design a label which is fun and then mix and pour your candle! they had a variety of price points too for the types of candles you can make. We each made one that was about $24 which I thought was reasonable. They also hold them for you for awhile since it takes two hours to solidify. We originally had planned to pick them up later that night but took too long and it got close to their closing time, so we picked them up the next day! It would be easy to go earlier though then grab some dinner to kill the two hours and be able to pick them up the same day. In terms of accessibility I believe there was a step up into the shop. Also, all the tables are high top that you work at and the candles are on higher shelves. So cute! Enjoyed making Mother's Day candles in the heart of the Strip District with my Mom. They had a great deal to buy 3 and get one free, so my Mom made plenty of options. I found out that they have additional scents (specifically the seasonal ones) that aren't out to try, but if you ask for a certain blend they can let you use them. I have been numerous times now and every time the staff is extremely welcoming, knowledgeable, and willing to help you select scents that would create a fantastic candle! Oh, and it's BYOB which is an added bonus. It tends to be extremely busy on the weekends, so I try to go in the afternoon on a weekday. The candle lab seemed like such a cool concept, I really wish i could have experienced more of it during my visit there. I stopped by because I do love candles and always have one burning. You can make your own candles here! Unfortunately due to the pandemic they've limited the number of reservations and they were full for the day so i wasn't able to try it out. The staff was apologetic but i was bummed I couldn't make my own scent to take home with me. The shop is adorned with walls of various candles all which did smell rather amazing. But I decided not to buy that day, I would have rather made my own distinct scent that was my own. This place would be perfect for a date night or eventually, a small group gathering. I've had several great experiences at the Candle Lab. They have an ample amount of scents for you to smell and choose from. As you smell, you write down which ones you like. After that, a team member will evaluate what you wrote down and then suggest a combination of scents that will blend well together. The fun part- you get to pour in the exact amount of each scent that you like to create a unique scent blend. Overall the process takes around 20-40 minutes depending on how quickly you pick your scents. We had a group of almost 20 ladies attend last Saturday for part of a Bachelorette Party. We had a nice time making candles, but one of the employees, Hannah, was extremely rude and unwelcoming. She seemed almost annoyed or irritated that we were there and it made many of us feel uncomfortable. When we were finishing up making our candles, some of the ladies were using the restroom and some were paying/getting their coats on - one of the employees told us that we could move all of our drinks/purses and set them on the end of one of the bar areas until we were ready to go. We did that and then Hannah came over and started yelling "whoever these drinks belong to, these need moved right now, glad you had fun, but it is time for you go to" in such a condescending tone. We had just spent so much money there and it was so rude of her to speak to customers this way. A few of us returned a couple of hours later to get the candles for our group. Hannah was standing at the cash register and another employee was at the pick-up wall. The employee at the pick-up are asked us who we were picking up for and we replied that we were there to pick up for everyone that was there in our bachelorette party. Hannah overhead this and then yelled over "she wasn't here during your party so that means absolutely nothing to her", again in a very rude/annoyed tone. The employee at the pick-up wall was very helpful and friendly and helped us to find all of the items that we were there to pick up. If these types of employees or this type of behavior are acceptable to this company, I will NEVER be back to this location and I will be recommending against this location to anyone that I know. This was a huge disappointment and misstep in my opinion - you could've had almost 20 women that could've returned and/or recommended this to their friends and family and instead, you have almost 20 women telling everyone about our negative experience with Hannah. I hope that Hannah can get some insight on how to be respectful of others and this doesn't happen to anyone else in the future. read more

Everything is explained to you and the employees make suggestions about which scents will go together best. There are plenty of ways to take your custom scent home -- several candle jars and sizes, mist, sugar scrub, spa salts, wax tarts, lotion and reed diffusers. They also have gift packages, shower gel and bubble bath for sale. I'd totally do this again. I've been here twice, and my goal is to make a unique candle that I couldn't just pick up at Bath and Body Works. Some of the scents are more traditional like vanilla bean and pear, while there are also a good variety of more unusual scents like wasabi and cannabis. There are probably at least 80 scents to choose from. You start by smelling your options and writing down your favorite scents. Then a staff member suggests scent combinations of two or three you've written down and mix it up through a combination of oils. The jars to choose from have varying price points, from $25 to $55 each. Also they usually seem to have a promotion with buy three get one free, so bigger groups will get a discount. Do you think there's tons of candles I can smell??") and was thrilled to find out I can mix my own candle scent!!!! Basically you smell a ton of scents (maybe 100+), pick your faves and combine 2-3 with the ratio you want to make your own candle. You also pick which container you'd prefer, which is how price is determined. It takes maybe 20-40 mins to smell everything and mix your scent, depending on how much time you spend among the scents, and then you come back at least an hour and a half later to pick it up once it's ready. My only issue with this place is that prices are a bit steep, but it is a really cute activity that I didn't mind splurging on too much. Slowly becoming my go-to for candles! Unfortunately, I've never sat down to make my own blend, but they have a whole wall of candles with some seriously interesting scents! Basil is one of my oddball favorites, but I enjoy the dessert ones the most such as Hazelnut, Pumpkin Spice (seasonal), Whipped Cream, and Brown Sugar! They are open during these weird covid times and you must wear a mask. Makes it difficult to smell the candles but I noticed if you sort of waft the lid in the general direction of your face you get a pretty good idea! They sanitize all candles that are handled and you are given a "fresh" candle from stock in the back. The sometimes have deals but their candles are on the pricy side, probably on par with Yankee Candle but they don't have the mini options (that I know of). So much fun! This place was packed when we went, and i understand why. They have a great system so you can start the candle making process as soon as you get there, even if there's a wait for the actual assembly part. I was surprised that my friend and I (not part of a large group) weren't put with strangers to share an employee to increase efficiency. But we weren't and that's awesome and shows Candle Lab's commitment to the customer experience. There are so many choices for products - not just candles, but bath products, reed diffusers, etc. The experience was 5 stars. I want to give 3.5 stars overall but that's not a choice. This is due to my dissatisfaction in the quality of the finished product. Unfortunately the wicks in my candies were not centered so they're not burning evenly. I'm serious candle person (wick trimmer, timing) so it's not laziness or lack of candle care on my end. I always have a great time at The Candle Lab. In my time in Pittsburgh I've been a few times, and it's always pleasant. It is a little pricey for a candle, but I'm all about the experience. From the comments I've read, I must be lucky because there's always a small crowd there when I go. We're able to sit at the bar area and have nice conversation with the host as we try to put smells together. I found out that I'm particularly bad at picking smells, and the staff is alway there to help me articulate what I'm thinking. BYOB is always a plus! Great date place close to the city and there's plenty off food places in close proximity. I will add that usually have fun making the candle then I give it to a friend or family member as a gift.
