Bunratty Manor Hotel - Broken thermostat and dirty filter

When we chose to…read morenot eat at the hotel's restaurant, she told us we would be disappointed, but not in a fun way. Our room had two nonworking lamps, which turned into three nonworking lamps. She brought us two different lamps that did work, but it would've been nice to have the third one. She said, "You like your lamps, do you?" Bathroom garbage had been left from previous guests. Street traffic and party revelers awakened me late into the wee hours of the morning. Not my favorite stay in Ireland.

So, our group had to venture to a nearby pub to order some food. We brought back takeout for a couple of young parents in our group that stayed behind with their baby. THEY WERE THEN BANISHED TO THE SITTING ROOM TO EAT THEIR TAKEOUT. Again, nobody was allowed to bring a morsel of food into their bar that was NOT serving food. There was hardly anyone there!! Just not a warm first impression. We were exhausted and starving, and that was a dumb rule. The woman at the front desk was not particularly pleasant, and she was also the bartender. Our room was sub par, cigarette burns in the tub. No extra toilet paper in the room when we ran out. And the broken thermostat was blinking the whole stay, begging for a filter change...gross. The china was also dirty at breakfast. The only pluses I will give to this place: the sitting and dining rooms were decorated well and the OTHER staff (NOT the receptionist/bartender) were pleasant. Owner also seemed nice.

Turns out having consistent amenities like shampoo, soap, and conditioner arent a constant normal thing in hotels. Nor is air conditioning. This hotel had both those things AND delicious hotel food. Maybe it's hard to find food to fit the budget of the included meals in a tour group, so Ive been eating some version of chicken and mash at every meal. This time I went rogue and paid for my own meal and was treated to a delicious braised beef dish and toffee pudding. Best meal I had on the whole trip was from a hotel and I still think about that braised beef. Oh yeah, the view is pretty good if you get a waterside view room. I unfortunately got a view of the roof, but I won't let that deter me from giving this place 5 stars.

The weekend we were there, the hotel was quite busy and was unable to find a spot to park the second night and ended up paying to park across the street. We didn't know until after we paid to park that, according to the front desk, the spots out front of the hotel that say 2 hour parking can be ignored and are able to be parked all night. Besides parking, everything else was great. Staff are very nice and we enjoyed our room. The view was also really nice of River Shannon. The hotel is a short walk to King John's castle, St. Mary's Cathedral, The Milk Market, and various bars and food. It's a great place to call home base for a few nights. I'd definitely stay again if visiting Limerick again.

It was easy enough getting there from Dingle and not long of a drive. Our hotel was right on the "strand" (which is what they call rivers? in Ireland). We got incredibly lucky and got upgraded to an amazing suite when we checked in. We aren't sure if it is because it was only one night's stay, or because we used the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, but it was literally the biggest and nicest room my husband and I had EVER stayed in (August 2023). Unfortunately the hotel didn't offer laundry services for only one night, but the staff was very helpful in sharing some food recommendations for dinner and breakfast. Emily and Scott were especially helpful making sure we had everything we needed and making us feel very comfortable and welcomed into the city. The hotel itself is located in a perfect spot between being able to walk the main downtown streets and still close enough to the points-of-interests. It felt designed towards business related events and we really clean, nicely decorated and smelt good! In the lobby, they had a piano (which the F major key didn't work) but that's ok. Our junior suite was on the third floor, and was the corner room with a wrap around balcony giving 180°+ views of the city, including the King John's Castle. It was the only true king size bed we have had and even had 2 sinks! It was furnished beautifully and has perks like blankets for the glassed-in balcony and modern accent lighting. We really liked this hotel and was our favorite by far!!

Temperature was hot, no ac or fan available. No vending machine in hotel to buy water or snacks on off hours. Fish and chips had skin left on one side and multiple bones found. We came here with a tour group. I did have a warm shower and clean sheets, but I personally was disappointed in the hotel, staff cleanliness and amenities. I yelped other hotels in the area and they looked a lot more modern and within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. I would not come back.

There's a walkway across the river from the hotel, so you can wander the banks for hours if you're able. Just outside the hotel is the sleepy village of Castleconnell, with a few shops, pubs, etc. The hotel is really nice too. There's a self catering section, the main hotel and function hall, leisure centre, and another courtyard of apartments (where we were holed up). Having our dog with us, it was really convenient to be able to get her outdoors at a moments notice and also for her to have a bit of room to run around indoors. The food and ambience at the hotel were great too. The service was excellent all-around too. Overall, this place is a perfect example of what I'd want when staying in an Irish hotel.

From the small back deck you can look over this town all the way to the high cliffs that drop into the ocean, creating picturesque views of the orange, red and pink sunset. We arrived to a small sign personally welcoming us. Niall and Darra treated us like family while we stayed at their house and even dined at their table. They were personally acquainted with the entire area and gave us honest recommendations for spending our days there. We were able to see the Cliffs without crowds because of their directions. We then had the perfect dinner of local food at Roadford House where we walked along stonewalls past cows, horses, and sheep to the intimate dining room overlooking pastures. We ended the night by enjoying local music at O'Connor's Pub just a minute walk from the Sea View. We would highly recommend staying at the Sea View for at least a few nights on your trip to Ireland. The event space was beautiful. We were blown away by the food at dinner the evening before and at the wedding reception. Our friends are still talking about the risotto, beef Wellington and the fillet. It's rare to experience fine dining at an event, but that's exactly what was provided for us. Our family has traveled extensively. We can happily report that Dromoland is the best overall experience that we have ever had in a hotel. The castle and grounds are gorgeous and meticulously maintained. Most historic hotels have fusty guest rooms. Dromoland had modern, luxurious rooms with state of the art fittings. Everything in the rooms was great, but the beds and showers were world class. Our guests were raving about their accommodations. The common areas were fun to spend time in. The live music was a treat. The food at the castle is by far the best food we had in Ireland. It would hold its own against any fine dining establishment. The bride and groom had an amazing dinner in the Earl of Thomond restaurant. I had the best fish and chips of my life in the Gallery and was pleased to quaff my first pint of Guinness in Ireland at the cocktail bar. Breakfast was an event in itself. The food and service were amazing. We commandeered a large table and spent a couple of hours every morning with a rotating cast of family and friends. The excellent staff took it all in stride. The activities were great- my family was captivated by the falconry. Jane's hotel tour was a lot of fun. One friend played an enjoyable round of golf and our kids tried skeet shooting- all were very happy. Many of us had excursions organized by Dromoland. The drivers were courteous and knowledgeable. The thing that sets Dromoland apart from every other hotel that we have ever stayed at is the level of service. The staff are charming and amazingly helpful. They often anticipated our needs. The attention to detail was awesome. The rooms and common areas were meticulously clean. Turndown service was lovely. The housekeeping staff would even tidy up chargers and cords when they made their rounds. The wedding and our extended stay at Dromoland was a peak experience for our family and friends. We can't recommend the castle highly enough. We should have stayed a few more days just to relax.
