Whether you're coming for a drink with a friend or having date night, Killjoy is such a JOY to be at. They do have a small parking lot in front, but there's a garage right across the street from it - you know how downtown Raleigh parking can be, but it's not a pain here. I got the Skeleton Key cocktail ($10), my fiancé got the Brooklyn lager. We also got the house pimento spread and candied bar nuts, and I'll be honest - I wasn't expecting much, but WOW. I was full by the time we were done! Everything tasted so good. Beware of the pimento spread if you don't like spicy food, it does have a slight kick. It's got a cozy and intimate vibe, and do make sure to make a reservation! read more

I was really surprised to see the reviews about the employees being awesome but then didn't experience the same energy. I think the reviews may have been referencing class experiences though. When we walked in we weren't greeted and had to ask do we seat ourselves. After 10 minutes of seating, we were then told we are to order at the bar. I didn't understand if we walked in and asked do we seat ourselves why it didn't prompt the employee to explain the process. That was a clue it was our first time. We ordered two drinks which for the price and size of glass is ridiculous. The decor is really nice though. Overall, I wouldn't return. There were others bars I enjoyed more. read more

Stopped in for a few drinks on my daughter's birthday. Given today's environment, it was pretty impressive how they deal with Covid, with the automated facemask detector and temperature check right at the door when you go in. Also, looked like all employees were appropriately masked. Then there were the drinks. Nice, fun selection of unique cocktails, and a good beer selection also. We were here for the first time. We don't drink alcohol and hence when looking up for places with good mocktails, Killjoy came up on the search. They have got some amazing maocktails and there are some cocktails which can be made mocktails too! We got Orange Dreamsicle and Pear Cream Soda, both were too good! Great cocktails, chill atmosphere. Walked in without a reservation on a Friday night and was able to be seated at the bar. Told the bartender (Nicky) that I was drinking tequila and that I'd like something a little spicy not too sweet. Nicky took that description and ran with it & served me up the perfect drink I didn't know I was looking for. I also love the decor, they def created an atmosphere for photo opps between the floral backdrop at the entrance, the wallpaper in the restrooms and the "mirror" room - perfect for selfies. One more comment on the bathroom - thank you for stocking the ladies room with hair ties, Bobby pins and mints.. likeeee you guys are the best! 10/10 highly recommended if you're in Raleigh! read more

We went for a mixology class and it was amazing! Cat, the new GM, hosted the class. She has the personality and knowledge to host this kind of class. Meh. Very underwhelming. Maybe I was too excited for Killjoy so the disappointment felt even worse? Not sure, but this won't be a spot we hit on the reg. We made a reservation, which is weird considering you're not really at a table.. we chose an open spot on a beautiful blue velvet couch. Let me first say that this place is very instagrammable, so if you're into that you'll probs like this spot. The staff was super nice, but painfully slow. We each got a cocktail and ordered the pimento cheese dip. I got the Luckiest and my husband got an Old Fashioned.. we thought his would be the beautiful purple cocktail we saw on IG, but it was just a standard one. Not a problem, it was still good! The pimento cheese dip was tasty, but the crackers are literally $2 club crackers that you eat with chicken noodle soup when you're sick. It was kind of laughable considering they're going for an elevated experience. Overall, I think this place misses on several levels. My partner and I are visiting Raleigh and saw this bar is near our hotel so we wanted to give a try. I asked the waiter for a drink recommendation and described to them the flavors I tend to like and the level of sweetness I prefer. Cool vibe. I went with a few friends and we got a number of drinks. All of them were really tasty. I got the luckiest which tasted amazing but I am fairly confident there was little to no liquor in the drink. First off it's Irish whiskey which is a bit hard to cover the taste and second I didn't feel anything after it. Hence why the missing stars. It also was extremely noisy so hard to have any conversation especially for a fancy cocktail bar. Fun vibe for after dinner though. read more

From the staff to the manager to the food, everything was on point. The food truly speaks for itself. They serve small plates, which we love because it gives you the chance to try different things and experience a variety of flavors. We started with the fried pork belly on tostones. It was perfectly seasoned, topped with avocado, and every bite just melted in your mouth. Next, we had the tamarind sticky ribs with a tamarind mango barbecue sauce. This was a perfect example of how simplicity can create complex flavors. The ribs were cooked just right -- not completely falling off the bone, but tender enough that when you bit into them, the meat pulled apart so easily. They were juicy, full of flavor, and had just the right touch of spice from the chili flakes. Then we moved on to the mini arepas, and oh my God. They had slow-cooked pork, guava barbecue sauce, and fried papas on top. The arepa itself was crispy on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside. The savory pork paired with the sweetness of the guava barbecue sauce was incredible, and the crunch from the fried papas took it to another level. Now, I have a bit of a sweet tooth, but my wife does not. I wanted dessert, and we were leaning toward the tres leches, but our waitress highly recommended the bread pudding. I am not usually a fan of bread pudding at all, but her recommendations had been on point all night, so I decided to trust her. I am so glad we did. They take a Mexican bolillo, soak it overnight in tres leches, then pan-sear it to create this crispy caramelized outside while keeping the inside warm, soft, and sweet. It is topped with crema and toasted coconut, then they pour warm guava syrup over it and serve it with a scoop of coconut sorbet. The layers of flavor in that dessert were unreal. Honestly, it may have been the best dessert we have ever had. And remember, my wife is not big on sweets -- she usually only takes one bite of dessert, but this time she tried to eat over half of it. Lol. I highly recommend this place. The food, the service, the drinks, and the atmosphere were all amazing. And after dinner, you can even head upstairs to work off the food with salsa lessons and a dance club. This is definitely a spot worth checking out! Este lugar fue absolutamente increíble. El sabor salado del cerdo combinado con la dulzura de la salsa barbecue de guayaba fue increíble, y el crujiente de las papitas fritas lo llevó a otro nivel. Ahora, a mí me gustan mucho los dulces, pero a mi esposa no tanto. Yo quería pedir postre, y estábamos pensando en el tres leches, pero nuestra mesera nos recomendó mucho el budín de pan. Normalmente no soy fanático del budín de pan, pero sus recomendaciones habían sido excelentes toda la noche, así que decidí confiar en ella. Me alegra muchísimo haberlo hecho. Toman un bolillo mexicano, lo remojan durante la noche en tres leches y luego lo sellan en sartén para crear una capa exterior crujiente y caramelizada, mientras que el interior se mantiene calientito, suave y dulce. Lo sirven con crema y coco tostado, luego le vierten encima un jarabe tibio de guayaba y lo acompañan con una bola de sorbete de coco. Las capas de sabor en ese postre fueron irreales. Honestamente, puede que haya sido el mejor postre que hemos probado en nuestra vida. Y recuerden, mi esposa no es muy amante de los dulces; normalmente solo prueba un bocado del postre, pero esta vez intentó comerse más de la mitad. Jajaja.

It's not the best I ever had, but a solid choice and the portion was excellent. The cocktail was well balanced and tasted good. The skirt steak was nice, but I was full so didn't eat all of it. There are black beans under the skirt steak that were AMAZING. It was just a small option of the dish - not the size of a side portion but almost like a "sauce" under the steak. It was perfect. This place remains a solid choice. I would come here again on a date or with a girl friend.
