Loved this place. Service started slow but picked up. Staff were amazing. Food tasted great and all but one of the wine pairings were on point.

This has been by far the best restaurant we've encountered on our New Zealand trip so far. We were blown away by our dinner here that we had to come back the next night. We arrived at 5:30 on the dot to secure a table in the first seating during our first time here, and the second night we arrived at around 7 and were seated by 7:45. The servers are all extremely friendly and helpful with the menu choices. We got the beef tartare both times since it was so memorable. The salmon of our first night was the best salmon I've ever had, tender and juicy and so flavorful. Some of our other favorites were the lamb shoulder, the kumara, the Kika Fried Chicken, and the salted cod croquette. This restaurant is definitely a must try if you're stopping by Lake Wanaka!

My husband and I went to Kika for our post elopement ceremony and couldn't have been happier. We opted for the "just feed me" menu as we were feeling quite adventurous; and the quality of food we received for the price was more than fair. The courses were all delightful and well thought out with great texture; I had no idea vegetables could taste so dang delicious! To our surprise the staff gave us a couple glasses of champagne to celebrate our nuptials, which was a very unexpected and appreciated gesture. The staff were appropriately attentive and we were happy we were able to celebrate with them.

First of all, I would not describe this as an Italian place. I would describe it as outstanding, fresh, creative tapas cuisine!! So, the titles on the menu are italian...but...don't go here looking for standard Italian comfort food fare. We began with 2 apps or "Piccolos" to share: First was the beets. There were "smoked oranges" in the beets. Yes, they were smoked. Yes, they were oranges. It was a total mind-f$&@ and should've been included as an exhibition in the nearby puzzleworld. But they were good. Also, there were yummy pistachios in this dish. Can't go wrong there. Although some moron at the next table tried to argue they weren't actually pistachios. Next up: fried chicken app called "kika fried chicken". It was solid, good texture, tomato sauce was tasty. Compared to the other dishes, this was probably our least fave, the most "meh," but still good. The main: the market fish for two. Interesting mixture of flavors as the fish was swimming in a bed of olives, lemon, peppers, onion, and some other mysterious tasty items. Pun intended. The bones were picked clean, as pictured. Reports indicate the eyeballs were especially tasty, but I can't speak from personal experience. The side: charred carrots. You can't go wrong! Interesting medley of textures with the yogurt and nuts... Wine pairings: ask your knowledgeable waitress for help! They also have wine tastings here, you don't have to commit to whole glasses, which is awesome. The dessert: carrot cake gelato - apparently this is the chef's deconstructed version of a carrot cake. It was an amazing brain child of the chef! However, were I to come back, I would probably try a different desert next time. Everyone should try this at least once, though!

This restaurant exceeded my expectations, even if they were high. The harmony of the flavors and the originality of the meals made it the best restaurant I've been to in New Zealand. The lamb was a generous portion and simply delicious. The small plates to share were all good, fresh, different. The only thing I liked a little less was the speed of service, as if they wanted us out as quickly as possible to clear out the table. We didn't even get the time to drink a glass a wine after our cocktails. For this type of restaurant I consider this too fast. Otherwise, if you enjoy good food and generous portions you should make a stop at Kika.

A new restaurant set up by the owner of Francesca's Italian Kitchen. Delicious food with an emphasis on shared dishes. Food styles were eclectic. The lamb was superb and big enough for 3 to 4 people. We were there in winter but strongly recommend for a nice day in the outdoor area next to the creek.

My husband and I had a fantastic dinner here. All the shared plates that we ordered were nothing short of excellent. They don't take reservations, but we had no problem getting seated right away.

My fiancé made the smart decision of looking at areas outside of downtown and found this restaurant. It's a little on the outskirts of downtown but not too far (via car). Our reservation was for 9 but we got there almost an hour earlier yet managed to get a table. The owner/manager (?) welcomed us and sat us himself. As for tables for dining, this place is pretty small so it makes sense to make a reservation for dinner during the busy seasons. This is definitely a local place and the service shows that. We ordered the tomato and basil bruschetta to share and a glass of Riesling, we enjoyed both. Like most places in NZ I've been to, they have one vegetarian option in their mains so I went with it: house-made gnocchi with tomato, chili, basil, olive & caper sauce with ricotta and Parmesan cheese. It was absolutely delicious, after having Italian at several places in NZ, this dish felt the most authentic and was hands down the best. I've enjoyed every part of the dish and wanted more. The fiancé ordered the Fiordland wild venison, seared on mushroom risotto and steamed green beans and liked it a lot. The service was pretty good, I've learned to lower my expectations regarding service when outside the US but our waitress was sweet and personable. The owner/manager also checked on us several times throughout the meal. We had a little issue with some items being wrong on the check itself and getting the check (but I assume they simply didn't want to rush us) but all in all, I truly enjoyed this place and it was probably the best meal we had on our trip.

We ordered a Mediterranean pizza and garlic bread. Although it wasn't 100% authentic Italian it was the best pizza we ate while in New Zealand. (well the regular menu isn't vegan, but they have a menu for vegans!!) This was epic because my boyfriend could get his meat pizza and I could order anything from this page-long menu made just for me! Another thing I loved about this place - the wine list comes along with a huge selections of vegan wines, marked with a little circled V in front of them. Pretty sure this is my new favorite place! I ordered a penne alla arrabbiata with a glass of *vegan* Italian Primitivo and holy f*ck was I happy when that baby was placed in front of me. Granted, I'd been traveling most of the day and hadn't had a proper meal, but I ate that penne so fast, my mouth was on fire from the chile. They even topped it with some bread crumbs instead of the parmesan that the non-vegan version comes with. Et viola! I was in vegan heaven. My boyfriend was happy with his pizza, and I was hoping to save room for dessert, but couldn't make it happen after that pasta. I did like that I left feeling full but not overly stuffed, but I was really hoping to order the vegan chocolate cake or the coconut panna cotta. I'm hoping to make it back here before leaving QT, if only for dessert!

Like everywhere in NZ, make reservations…read more I'm staying in Queenstown for a few days, and booked this reservation a few nights prior. The restaurant itself is long and narrow, so tables on one side and servers and the kitchen on the other. I ordered bruschetta for my starter & spaghetti bolognese for my main. The bruschetta came out with sliced prosciutto on top which I could have done without. I wished for more tomatoes, onion, and oil. The spaghetti bolognese was flavorful but just ok? Like, I'm not Italian but can make a better version of that at home. Although it's a simple dish, that probably not something you want to hear when you're selling it for $36 NZD. So the overall dining experience was a bit meh. I went to a pizzeria in Te Anau with better flavors. It might be a nice dinner date because the ambiance is lovely, if a bit loud. The service was fine, if a bit on the slow side.

Not much to look at but it was a little quieter and away from the ovens back there. Husband had the fettuccine carbonara and I had a margarita pizza. Both were excellent. Parking on street is less than rare so we parked in a lot for roughly $10USD. Great experience.

I ordered the spaghetti with meatballs with a side salad, my mom had the green lipped mussels, and my dad had the ribeye. We received a bottle of water for the table which I LOVE because then I can drink as much water as I want without having to find my waiter when my cup is empty. The spaghetti was great and covered with a deliciously chunky tomato sauce, but the meatballs were super tough and dry.. Thankfully when my dad asked the waitress if she could swap them out for some fresh ones she quickly did so, and the new meatballs were much tastier!
