Wow, one of the best meals we've had in Wānaka. With a slogan of "Slow food done fast," we weren't sure what to expect. There are three sizes of entrees and you get to chose one protein and numerous other sides depending on the size. The beef was INCREDIBLE and it was so nice having a wide selection of vegetables to choose from. We ordered some of the carrots, potatoes, onion gratin, broccoli salad, and couscous. Amazing lunch stop in Wanaka. They have such a great assortment of fresh foods, and it's great to be able to pick your plate size. This place is seriously amazing. I wish they had something remotely close to it in California. Its a restaurant with open seating where you wait in line to order at the counter. There 3 different sizes to choose from and I went with the medium size where you can get 5 different combinations of vegetables and meat. I believe you can choose 4 vegetable options and 1 meat option for a medium size. Since I was with my partner, we had 2 medium plates so we could try a variety of dishes. I went with the lamb meatballs, beef cheeks, lentils, cooked onions, broccoli salad, carrots, rice, and another type or orzo salad. The favorite by far was the lamb meatballs. They were just so tender and juicy while not screaming lamb flavor. We also liked the lentils and broccoli salad. I was a little hesitant with the other side salads, but they were all delicious. On top of the good food, they also have a water station that has carbonated water, which is definitely my jam. I ate at this Big Fig and the Queenstown Big Fig both, even though that's a huge no-no according to my wholly invented traveling rulebook. Always go for variety! (Unless Big Fig is too good, I guess, then you can go there twice.) I was a sucker for it even before I tried it: tons of healthy-leaning, freshly made salads, stews, meats, and roasted vegetables, just waiting for me to add them all to a bowl and create some messed up flavor combinations that don't really work? That's totally my wheelhouse. Sometimes you just want all your nutrients all mashed up, and NZ tends a little bit too meat 'n' potatoes for my tastes, so Big Fig was a great way for me to get my veggies all at once. What did I try here, plus the Queenstown location? What didn't I try? The standouts were the lamb shawarma (not shawarma whatsoever but please do not miss this), the kumara gratin, the quinoa salad, the beef cheeks, the eggplant, the courgettes, and the meatballs. The aggressive duck that got into my lap like a dog on the shore of Lake Wanaka and LEAPT at my fork to steal a carrot on its way to my mouth would like to recommend the roasted carrots as well. It's a counter service where basically you combine choose the size of your plate then choose what goes in in three categories: meat, veggies and salad. The food is close to middle eastern cuisine. I appreciate the concept of this restaurant - slow, quality food with the speed of a deli counter - but the flavor and affordability are lacking. I went twice. The first time I went at 4:30 and was told dinner isn't served until 5:30 so I had to wait an hour for the meat/hot dishes to be prepared. Understandable! I ordered a medium sized plate with meat. I got the beef cheek, roasted potatoes, eggplant, and watermelon salad. The beef cheek was good, but almost HALF of my portion was pieces of pure fat. The potatoes were over roasted and under seasoned, making them quite bland. The eggplant and watermelon salad were good! I wanted to give them another try, so I went the following day for lunch and ordered the small meat plate. I got the meatballs, mushrooms, and pepper salad. I was extremely disappointed by the quantity I was given. Only 1 mushroom. It was more of a snack than a meal. The flavors were good, but not remarkable. I understand that high quality means high prices, but some of the dishes are so simple - peppers and oil for example - I don't see how they can charge so high of a price. read more

Purely based on: - coffee - service - decor - family friendliness Coffee took ages and it wasn't that busy.. not sure why they didn't double on the machine handles. My coffees were average which is not hard to do allpress beans. Food looked amazing so will have to go back and try but we enjoy cooking our own food and Wanaka has a few food spots where we'd happily spend $. Staff were friendly enough and there was good flow of customers although I feel they could rearrange their seating to make better use of their prime location. Outside tables good for families and bigger group numbers but their internal lighting was a bit dark. Still - they've been here for a while so must be doing a few things right.
