I'm a first time mom and had to do what many moms dread: go back to work and put their very small child in daycare at only four months old. Mind you, my husband and I are in the PNW alone as our family is all in Ohio so daycare was our only option and our support tribe is small. I found Bright Star as I was searching for a location close to work so I didn't have to rush to pick her up. Here are some things I love: - It's easily accessible and right off the highway. I don't take part in this benefit but it's also right across the street from Lynnwood park and ride for anyone needing to commute. - Its CLEAN and they're always making updates. One month into our enrollment they got the whole facilities floor done and also have updated their front desk since we've been there. - It's secure. Upon arriving you use a keycard to check in and also use your finger print to check in and check out your child individually. - They're with the times! A few things: each room has a camera system so you can watch your child all day on the WatchMeGrow app (great for pumping moms at work), they have a report card app called Tadpole that they communicate with you on and let you know how your child progressed, what they ate, bathroom, etc., and finally the owner Tina also has a photography hobby and updates the Bright Star facebook page almost daily with pictures of the enrolled kids through the day (no 1990s pics that make you wonder the validly of the clientele). - Finally, the staffs incredible. My daughters teachers (Jackie, Rachel, Denise) are some of the most caring humans I have come into contact with. They treat my daughter as their own and because of them she's progressed immensely and is becoming wildly independent and genuinely loves going to "school". We loved our previous school, and struggled with whether we'd every find another to fill such big shoes. We toured several local scincluding La Petit in Mukilteo, Kindercare in Brier, and Bright Star Academy in Lynnwood, but Penny Creek came highly recommended from dear friends, so although out of our way at the time, we gave it a shot. I can honestly say that Penny Creek has blown all of our expectations out of the water. Our whole family feels like we are a part of this school, and our kids (ages 2&4) are thriving. We enrolled our 4 year old into a phonics class, and now she is learning things that most kids don't learn until kindergarten or beyond. Our once shy two year old has totally come out of his shell. It's clear that all of the kids are well loved here, as each teacher knows them and their quirks, what they like and don't, and my kids always talk about how much they love their teachers when they get home. I also love that they play outside rain or shine, and offer a menu so you know what's being served any particular day. The facility is very clean, and check in and out is a breeze. Finally, they put on a holiday show that is the cutest thing you'll ever see. If you are wondering who to entrust with your little ones, you have found the right place. We absolutely LOVE them!

I only hope to warn other parents of this horrible place. I live next door to the daycare, and as a mother of two after what I've seen from them I would never put my kids in their care. I would like to warn other parents about what I've observed. If I could, I would tell parents of the kids currently enrolled there to look somewhere else for daycare. I've lived next door to the daycare for over a year now. Here's the breakdown of what I've observed: The first thing that bothers me is the lack of attention they give to the kids. During the kids' outside time, most of the teachers are either talking with themselves or looking at their phones. More often than not, it's really young girls on their cell phones rather than interacting with the kids. I'm not sure what the legal ratio is for teachers and kids, but there's often 30+ kids outside with about 3 teachers. Because of this lack of attention, I've seen kids get hurt when they could have been warned or told how to safely play if the teachers would have noticed. Once I've seen little kids no older than 4 or 5 get into a physical fist fight that looked like grown men whooping each other's a**. In that incident, I was inside doing laundry and could hear them fighting near the fence of my apartment. If I could hear them from inside my apartment, what their excuse for not hearing the fight from no more than 20 feet away? I went outside to stop them, and it took me yelling at the teachers and kids for about 5 minutes before the teachers stopped their oh so important conversation to finally stop the fight. The only teacher I have ever seen there actually take an interest in the kids was a young man, maybe early 20s or so, who would actually play with them. He organized soccer games and football games with the kids. All the kids seemed to really like him. I could tell when he was working because all you could hear was kids laughing. Usually it's a bunch of screaming and fighting. But I haven't seen him in several months. He was so different from the other neglectful teachers, I hope they didn't get rid of him because "it wasn't working out". Next what concerns me, is that when they do pay attention to the kids they speak REALLY harshly to the children. One woman, I think she's the main director because she's the only constant person I see, seems to always be yelling at the kids. She yells so much, I can recognize her voice from all the other teachers. And sometimes it's mean stuff. The kind of things that if my child came home and said a teacher was speaking that way to him, there would be serious problems. Just other day, this same woman was yelling at a poor kid over some goldfish crackers he had dropped. She was screaming at him, "I'm tired of you making a mess!" and "If you drop one more goldfish you won't be getting a snack tomorrow!" which then turned into, "Well I guess you don't want a snack then! Everybody else will get their snack tomorrow but you!" Now I admit, I didn't see the alleged mess. But I can't imagine how many goldfish crackers it would take before someone would flip out on a child like that. I may not have seen the mess, but I can tell you that the child wasn't yelling or talking back at all. The only person speaking, was the teacher yelling at the child. That particular choice of words is what finally led me to write this after a year of debating. As a professional early development center, I expect that the teachers there at the very least would never use food as a form as punishment. Especially since food costs are associated with their rates. As a consumer and parent, if I am paying for the food my kid eats while at your daycare, I don't care what kind of mess the kid was making or what kind of trouble he is--you better feed my kid. Don't get me wrong, I am not a perfect parent. Most of us have had a moment or two where we are not proud of our parenting. But if I am paying for my child to be cared for while I am at work, I expect that my child should be safe from verbal abuse. The lack of respect and care for the children is hands down the most horrible thing about this place. But how they interact with everyone in our block area is terrible too. They are horrible members of our community. I could mention many, but since I don't have the space, please trust me when I say that they have been extremely rude to different residents in my complex for no good reason. Do yourself and your children a favor and do not enroll them here. Bad all around.

Like many childcare centers, Heatherwood went through a period of teacher turnover and transition, and there were definitely some bumps along the way. Our daughter found some of that change difficult. But the center has undergone a significant leadership change over the past several months, and the difference has been noticeable. The environment today feels stable, thoughtful, and well led. The classrooms have strong, consistent leadership; many of the best teachers have stayed; and new teachers have been brought in who are adding to an already caring team. I've also been impressed to see the new leadership recognize strong teachers and create opportunities for them to grow and take on more responsibility. Most importantly, we see the impact in our daughter. She is having consistently calmer, happier days and has really settled into Pre-K. Her teachers know her, care about her, and have worked with her through transitions rather than expecting her simply to adjust on her own. One of the things that originally drew us to the YMCA was its culture. It is genuinely inclusive, caring, and community-minded, and we've always felt that at Heatherwood. The teachers have consistently cared about the kids, even during periods when the center itself was navigating change. After two years, we feel very good about where Heatherwood is today. The ship feels steady, the teachers feel supported, and most importantly, the kids are thriving. We're glad to be part of the community.

We switched from another daycare provider, so I have a point of comparison. My 3 year old loves going to "school," has formed positive bonds, and learns so much while there. She enjoys the field trips and varied activities. Since starting she has progressed through three age defined classroom levels and I have been pleased with the focus on development and learning at each stage. My new baby is thriving. I work at home a couple of days a week so go see her to nurse when I can. I am always welcome and greeted warmly by the teachers. My baby is always happy and clean. Since I am able to observe the teacher interactions with the babies, I feel good knowing my little one is there. Crib safety measures are always observed and I appreciate that there aren't a lot of "gadgets" such as bouncers/swings/exersaucers that invite using those items to occupy a child. Instead the babies receive a lot of time on mats and with interactive sensory toys. The teachers are exceptionally caring. While other child care facilities may offer more aesthetic bells and whistles, I feel confident that my children are safe, happy, and learning while I am at work. My entire family enjoys the optional family nights and opportunities for parent engagement. I highly recommend Heatherwood to anyone seeking child care.

There weren't any big problems per se, just nothing that made me think wow, this daycare is great! I think 9 months ago or so they got a new director and assistant director and things have gotten a lot better. They do spirit weeks pretty often which my daughter loves and I think is so fun! They decorate a ton for the holidays and the teachers have been much more consistent. My kid loves her teachers and loves going to school. They're even doing a family event next week with lunch and activities. Overall I'm really impressed and hope they keep the same director and assistant director because they clearly really care about running a good facility. I can tell her teachers really care about her too because they tell me about cute things she did or said during the day and talk to me about her progress in areas. They've added a lot to the classrooms too like stations for the kids to do activities and charts to mark their progress in things through the day.
