I've been with I love kickboxing for about 6 months before starting the #6WeekChallange. I…read moreoriginally joined the club to get ready for my military PT test. I hate running, so I had to get my cardio up. (I ended up doing really well, btw.) I'm pretty active (besides running, lol), I have been doing a lot of strength/weight training and I eat fairly healthy. I've was gaining weight (muscle mass) but not losing any body fat. So I decided to start the #6WeekChallenge to kick my butt in gear. It was definitely a challenge. Adjusting to the meal plan the first week was difficult; I was hungry about 99% of the week, but I lost 3lbs and 2% BF that week. The second week, I had no changes in my results, and I was extremely frustrated. (There were a few weeks where I didn't have any changes. ) After talking with the instructors, I adjusted my meal plan a bit to help out. By the 3rd-4th week, I still wasn't seeing the results I wanted, so I talked to some of my fitness friends for additional tips and I had to adjust my meals again. And because I wasn't eating very few carbs, I was unable to sustain my strength workout with weights, I just ended up doing a lot of body weight workouts and adding in more cardio (besides the 3-4 kickboxing classes per week). But I ended up losing 14 lbs and almost 8% body fat!! I was weak, tired, and hungry most of the 6 weeks and there were many moments I wanted to quit and just go eat a Cinnabon, but I'm glad I kept to it and am extremely proud of my results. Although, I know some of the weight I lost was muscle mass. Rather than recommending whether or not to join the club or the 6 week challenge, I'll state my pros and cons. Pros: 1. The instructors are AMAZING. They are very helpful and patient. And the push you when you THINK you can't or just don't want to do the work. 2. The other members/challengers are awesome. They are very encouraging, share tips, and are willing to be an accountability partner whenever asked. 3. Class times are accommodating, for the most part. There are classes later in the evening on most days, for those of us who work during the day. Cons: 1. The club and the challenge are really expansive, even with a military and member discount. 2. The club itself (Tacoma anyways) smells like stinky feet. (Until you get used to it.) 3. The punching bags are well used, it would be nice if they were updated. 4. Challenge specific; if you are fairly fit and don't really have the weight/body fat to lose, it's really difficult to be successful without doing additional things aside of the challenge itself.

Pros: friendly snd encouraging staff, modify things for new people, excellent full body work out Cons: high pressure sales pitch, and it's too expensive and not a flexible membership. $125/month and sign up for a year. If they had a punch card or a month to month - it would be much more doable. But if you aren't working out 3x a week every month. It's just too expensive for what you're getting. If you weren't committing to a year up front - it would be better. If they had a 10 punch card option- that would be helpful- but I also don't want to pay for 100 punches at once. They need more flexible membership types.

The person at the counter was super nice and the ease of getting a drop in class was a nice touch. The VIP package comes with a pair of gloves, so if you're new and want to keep coming it's a good investment. The facility is clean and tidy. They have a locker situation for your things and after each class the bags are sanitized and the floors as well. The class is a quality workout and wonderful lesson! I feel like I learned a ton just about the motion of my body. I drove all the way there from Puyallup and it's the real deal. Instructor is a for real a FIGHTER. He's fun and upbeat and really gets you warmed up. I was pretty scared, but this was a whole new experience. It's helpful that the instructor checks on you a bunch and tells you how to fix your motions. I worked muscles I hadn't in so long. The workout was intense but fun and I felt amazing after. I hadn't gone to bed at 7pm in years. Lol. 10 out of 10 recommend.

My two biggest issues were the schedule, I was only able to make once maybe twice a week because most of the classes are after 9am or in the evenings. I attended the 8:15 classes, but those were only offered on Monday and Friday in gig harbor. I saw that Tacoma location had several 6:15 classes but every time I asked I was told those wouldn't happen in gig harbor. Right after I stopped going I saw they canceled the 8:15 classes also, so I'm glad I'd already made the switch. My second issue was constantly pushing reviews and bringing in new members. Imo recruitment is this job, not mine. And the best reviews are written by folks who truly loved (or hated) an experience, not by being bribed to do so. It felt like their main purpose wasn't as much helping their students but trying to keep their business going. Again, imo the opposite method works better for long term business success.

And let me tell you, Eric Dahlberg is as good as it gets in terms of coaching. I gave a couple of other martial art places a trial before settling with Ring Demon. Eric doesn't just teach you boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, or jiu-jitsu, he teaches you a way to think about martial arts in general---relying on technique, energy, and leverage instead of strength to defeat your opponents. He is also ALWAYS willing to help out and ask any questions---no private lessons required. I was intimidated at first because the only martial arts experience I had prior to going enrolling in Ring Demon was a few weeks of trial classes and a year of karate way back in high school. But the school's approach to helping new students learn and integrate made me get past my comfort zone and eventually be comfortable enough to learn and spar. Summary: Great coach, great training partners, great environment to learn.
