Writing all these reviews has made me realise just how much money I spend on food (i.e. not from…read morethe supermarket). I must endeavour to find a cookbook and rediscover the lost art of knowing exactly what you are eating. That said, when food tastes as good as it does from Saffron Express I'd just say put the whisk and chopping board away my friends. I don't think its been here very long but me and my friends discovered this the other week - we were cruising around in my friend's car looking for somewhere we could grab some food. You see, after a few bad run ins with waiting forever for home delivery, we prefer to take matters into our own hands. Saffron Express is pretty good value for money - for under a tenner, you get three different curries plus loads of pilau rice etc. With cheap prices comes mediocre tastes but we were all plesantly surprised. We'll definitely be trying here again for the next film night - good food to share/ mix and match.

Poppadoms, naan breads, chapattis and pathoras, zingy citrus salads and raita, pickles and chutneys and tomatoes and tons of picky bits that make up the starters and accompaniments to most Eastern meals. And if you're feeling even more peckish and want some curry to wash those down, well look no further than the great value Saffron Express. With such low prices, as Sophie says you can afford to mix and match - my most preferred way of eating. It's simple, clean takeaway food, not focussing on too many things at once (I'm always wary of the place that tries to accomplish kebabs, pizzas and curries in one kitchen. It's just not natural). I discovered it via my Prestwich companion who took me there to grab a few stomach-liners for our evening of beverages and it worked out splendidly. In fact, I'm a bit upset I don't have one of these down the road from me. Never mind, just another excuse to go see that chum again. I mean, not that I'd focus on the food... wait, yes I would.

The restaurant is, as the name suggests, in a small cottage that has quite recently been extended to cater for the demand for a good curry house in the area. There must be no more than 15 tables in the entire place, which makes it nice and cosy - which I like. I have been here countless times, and each time I cannot fault the service. The waiters are friendly, and the same guys have worked there for years, so if you're local and go there frequently they remember your name - which is always nice. The food is authentic Indian food, with a varied choice of curries on the menu. One of their starters - Prawn on Puree - is my favourite and I often order this as larger portion for my main meal, which they are always more than happy to do for me. The prices are very reasonable here, and if you like them on Facebook they'll often post print-off vouchers on their page for customer discounts and freebies. They also run deals on certain nights, where you can get 3 courses and a beer for £15. Last week when I visited, the service was abnormally slow.. And something I haven't experienced before. Granted it was a busy Friday night but maybe they were a waiter down or something. The service is usually faultless - this must have been an off night but I wouldn't like to mark them down for it. I'll continue to go here, either with family or with friends - and if you're in the area it's definitely the best place for Indian food for a good few miles.

The interior decor is modern, with a large restaurant area & sofas in the waiting area. The menu is extensive & the food is delicious. Probably the best Indian food I've had. The service is exceptional, better than their other restaurants in Manchester. The staff couldn't do enough for you. Constantly ensuring your meal/evening was to the highest standard without being pushy. Excellent place, very highly recommended.

The interior is sleek and modern, they've obviously spent a decent sum of money on this place. There's a large dining area with booths dotted about and it was nearly full when we got there just after 8pm. We were asked if we wanted poppodoms and a pickle tray as soon as were seated, giving us something to munch on whilst perusing the (very large) menu. As another good mate had raved about Lamb Niharis for probably as long as I've known him, I chose that instead of my usual Saag. My friend chose a Chicken Bhuna and we shared rice and a peshwari naan. For drinks I was a renegade and ordered not a glass but a jug of Mango Lassi as I wanted to try something different. It was simply fantastic. How had I not discovered this refreshing and tasty beverage sooner? Our meals arrived after about 20 minutes, the peshwari glistening away and the curries smelling very appetising. Now the Nihari was good...there just wasn't a lot of it (only two chunks of lamb and a loose bone covered in sauce). It was very tender and the sauce was good for naan-dippage, but it just wasn't as enjoyable as my play-it-safe Saags. Service was great - attentive without being overly fussy. The final bill came to just over £40 between us which didn't seem unreasonable. A slick operation, decent food on the whole and friendly staff. Tip: there's free on-site parking, the entrance is on Higher Lane.

When you walk in you are asked to seat at a small coffee table bearing Bombay mix then ushered to.a table. The furniture is swish, with cream leather seats and sturdy tables. Opening a new looking menu it contained the same exciting variety as last time ;). For seafood lovers you can choose from lobster, salmon, sea bass and prawns. For veggies they offer standard veggie dishes to some special Himalayan ones..And for meat eaters the world is your Oyster! We ordered two pints of kingfisher and starters only, wanting to take our time. So two poppdums and daal soup later and we were happy ;) the dips accompanying the poppdums were well made , they consisted of generic mango chutney, lime pickle , raita and a curry sauce. The soup was of perfect consistency .. Potentially a dash more of lemon was required. Starters gone I then chose the curried seabass, rice and chappati. Himself selected the chicken curry. The sea bass was one of the most expensive dishes but when it arrived sizzling on a hotplate I was pleased. On the side it came with a gorgeous veggie curry sauce. The portions were massive unlike some places you go that offer no more than a sliver of fish. Even digesting this with red wine I waved the white flag at half way point. To end we were given segments of orange and the bill. Everything was reasonably.priced, well made and the service attentive. I had the feeling they were offended when we kept telling them we weren't ready to order the main but again we did it so we were not rushed. Honestly try this place I much prefer it to Akbar's

In these competitive environs, Akbar's holds its own with its gigantic naans and its flavorful curries. The offal-based offerings, such as maghaz (sheep's brain) masala and chicken liver tikka, are my personal favorites. The maghaz has a creamy, buttery texture and loads of flavor. The perfectly chewy naan is a great accompaniment to both dishes. A steaming cup of the sweet and salty Kashmiri chai is a perfect way to finish a meal on a cold Manchester winter evening (I usually find myself in Northern England around Christmastime).

For example, bookings in small numbers are not allowed, so if your party is less than 10 you would have to wait in the lounge. Moreover, you wouldn't be put in the queue for tables until all the people from your party have arrived! Once they have, you are given a device which will start flashing once your table is ready. For us it took just about 30 minutes (on a Thursday evening), so make sure you have no other plans this evening or come earlier. The place was full, we load to squeeze behind other guests backs - shows how popular the place is. Our waiter was very friendly and made us feel welcome immediately. Despite the venue being packed, food arrived quickly, and it was just delicious - couldn't find any faults! For those who feel adventurous, there are chef's challenges with spicy food (I heard you get s free dessert if you finish it- however , can't vouch for this). I have tried a tiny piece of this challenge from my friends plate, and almost cried from the amount of hot spices! Despite the wait, very enjoyable experience, and prices are more than friendly, which is very unusual for the city centre.
