As I continue to slowly get through the large list of review drafts I wrote when I was in Portugal,…read moreat this point, a bit over 3 months ago, in no particular order... this was one of two places that ended up on my list of places I had to try a famous bifana sandwich when I was in Lisbon, the other being O Trevo the next day. To both of them equally I say, there are very few places I'd be willing to stand in line for an hour for, and few of them involve meat on bread. Luckily, being the off-season, I didn't have *any* wait to order a sandwich. Unluckily, being the off season, that's also because it kept raining off and on, and this is a strictly take-out affair. So I ended up eating the sandwich under a nearby awning. In nicer weather conditions, though, there are plenty of nearby benches to sit on right there. Would i wait in a long line? I would not. But it was a legitimately great sandwich, great fluffy bread, great cheese if you splurge on cheese (as of a couple months ago, they were 3.5 euro without cheese, 5.5 with cheese), and solid, juicy, meaty meat, even if I do *personally* prefer the thin-sliced version like the other place I went, did. For how filling they are, that'd make them pretty darn affordable, if you don't add cheese, which I would probably keep doing anyway if I lived here, I'd just go when it was the off-season and not busy, *and* not raining*. At least as of when I was there, being a takeout place, they didn't have much in the way of drinks, but there was an unrelated business in the next alcove over selling cheap large glasses of beer and large blended fruity pineapple drinks. p.s. Make sure to absolutely douse your sandwich in mustard and chili oil, if you like spicy food like I do. They're self-serve, and great.

Two years running this was our favorite bifana…read more Location was a bit challenging as only the door leading into the restaurant was for locals while the window on the other side served all others. The challenge was the limited sidewalk in front and the lines extend across the street. People don't always realize they're standing in the middle of a street until they get honked at by a car. Menu was posted on the left behind the window. Plain and with cheese bifanas topped the menu but there were other choices as well like carne asada, egg and fish. Cash was the only tender accepted. The pork in the bifanas was constantly simmered and pulled out to make each sandwich individually. The bread was chibatta like and quite soft that enveloped the strips of pork. I added piri piri aauce and yellow mustard (big squirt bottles available on the counters to each side of the window) which gave it more flavor. A simple but great local sandwich. To avoid lines come at odd hours. I also came a little after lunch hour in moderate rain and there was just one person ahead of me.

I've been a regular client of this Honorato for a few years now and it maintains the good quality…read moreof its hamburgers and ingredients. Even though there is not much variety on the menu, Capitão Fausto is probably my favorite, with a somewhat strong flavor of watercress and delicious pickles. The "Honorato" is the classic burger for those who go there for the first time and want to make a safer choice, with the typical bacon and cheddar cheese, but it also includes corn, a curious ingredient that we usually ask to remove (if we replaced it with another ingredient we would have to pay extra, unfortunately). The vegetarian option wasn't bad, but I thought the brie cheese dominated the whole flavor and that's why I don't recommend it. The potatoes are very crispy, well seasoned and well served (I had difficulty finishing the dose). Sweet potatoes are more expensive, but they are also decent. I once tried the "mini" version of one of the hamburgers and left with the munchies. I'm one of those people who eats 3 slices of pizza and gets full, so I don't think this option is suitable for an adult. I've already tasted the mousse and it's pretty well served, so I had to share it with my boyfriend. I found it too sweet / sugary but I understand that it can be delicious for many. Unlike the "food menu", the drinks menu is quite varied and extensive, but as I don't drink alcohol, I'll just comment that non-alcoholic drinks are quite expensive, no doubt, but well served and delicious. I recommend the lemonade (€2.80) because it has the best quality/price ratio. In conclusion, if you are looking for a hamburger shop at relatively reasonable prices and with delicious hamburgers, I recommend Honorato. This one in Parque das Nações is very crowded, so I recommend that you book a table and I don't advise going to a holiday lunch, which tends to get quite crowded, with endless lines. If you really have to, make use of your sunscreen, which will be your friend while you wait! Anyway, the place is very spacious and suitable for group meals and the terrace is very pleasant and prepared to protect us from the sun. I recommend!

McDonald's - If you need a snack, street food, or coffee, you can stay at Oriente. If you want something predictable, there's this Big Mac combo meal.

    McDonald's

(McDonald's in Portugal while moving from one place to another - 1 of 2)…read more You may come across this McDonald's if you are a local and are shopping at the huge Vasco da Gama indoor shopping center in the Parque das Nacoes complex. You may also come across it if you are at the Oriente train station minted as a landmark for Expo 98 and you decide you don't like the food options in there while waiting for a train or a long distance bus. In this regard, this McDonald's is a win ... because I don't like the food options in the Oriente station. There are very few things I like at McDonald's and most of their food isn't really that good for you. I could go for a Filet-o-Fish but the price difference for a Big Mac isn't that much more, so that's what I order when at a McDonald's in another country and I make it a combo, with medium fries and a medium soft drink. Note that the prices for this meal are fair here and more favorable than in Italy or Spain. They will also give you some ketchup whereas in Italy you have seemingly have to pay for it at most McDonald's. To me, that's like not giving you napkins with your meal. I have wandered over from the massive and unique multi-modal Oriente station and have eaten here twice. On both occasions, they were packed with folks having lunch. For that matter, all of the food court merchants were very busy and finding a place to sit was not easy. When you find one, you move quickly. On both occasions, my hat was off to the employee who saw that I had luggage and could not wheel it to the table and carry a tray with a Big Mac meal without having it tip over. They helped me by carrying the tray to the table I had found. It's all there at this McDonald's - the food you know, service that is better than that provided by sullen teenagers in the U.S., a value priced meal, and, most of all, the interior of the Vasco da Gama center is big, open, and airy, featuring regular stores, high end stores, and a big (possibly on steroids) Continente "hypermarket" at the ground level. Getting here from the Oriente station across the street is easy, either via the pedestrian crossing at street level, through a below street level passageway, and, if I recall, there has been a footbridge over Avenida Dom Joao II as well, though it seemed to be closed this last time. Except for how busy it is, this is a good McDonald's and you can be among the few token tourist gringos (a term definitely used in Brazilian Portuguese) in here having a meal.
