I bought a foot-long Italian sub with extra pickles and peppers, which I often do at Subway because the taste of the regular sub is usually bland. People say it tastes like cardboard. To me it tastes like exhausted ham. I hate the smell of Subway restaurants in general but the one here isn't so bad because the gasoline is the dominant smell. Subway bread has that unmistakable tang, it smells like agribusiness. I also bought a package of sunflower seeds at Next Door, which I like to chew and spit out the window. It's the baseball player in me. And throwing things or spitting things out the window makes me think of that guy who wrote poems in his notebook and then tore out the pages and threw them out the window. I guess with my wife writing poems more and more that kind of thing comes to mind. I took the 10 to the 131 to the 80 to get to Chicago and I didn't eat the sandwich until I was passing through Gary, Indiana. I should not have bought a sandwich so early in the trip especially at Subway because the pickles and peppers and mayonnaise soaked into the bread. If you don't eat a Subway sandwich right away, it's pretty much unmanageable. That was my fault though as I was being unnecessarily precautious, thinking that I would have a hard time finding a rest stop on the way. At the same time I wish the bread had endured a little more. It's not how they made the sandwich it's a problem with the recipe. I spread out the sandwich paper on my lap and the lettuce and hot peppers started dribbling out, and the sub drooped and then fell apart. I am lucky the woman who made my sandwich gave me so many napkins. I get gas at Marathon still but I'm not likely to get another sandwich at Subway though the people there are great.
