Admittedly I don't listen to KFAI (90.3 fm) nearly as often as in earlier years. It may have evolved considerably over time. In fact there is a chance that at least parts are completely unrecognized by me. Regardless of its present shape, to the best of my knowledge it remains a community based, almost entirely a volunteer effort. I have found KFAI to be a source of information representing a diverse swath of voices, eclectic musical offerings and an interesting lineup of on-air talent. The signal used to be quite weak and localized. Since then I understand that it has significantly extended its reach to include most if not all of the metro. If you plan on contributing to a listener supported station, to me KFAI is well worth your consideration. read more

One Sunday night, many moons ago I was just this suburban punk kid. Sitting in my room in Brooklyn Park, filled with teenage angst I'm sure. It was a Sunday evening, I was laying on my bed listening to the radio and probably bored. I spun the dial all the way to the left and then I slowly started moving the dial to the right on my alarm/clock radio searching for something else. It didn't take much but I suddenly stopped it here, 90.3 FM. The song playing was Romeo Void's, Never Say Never. That guitar, drums, driving beat and suddenly that sax in the chorus was tossing my entire world of what I perceived as music. And enter the rabbit hole I did because many years down the road this station is still a mainstay. It still introduces me to music and I hear news that doesn't get played or aired anywhere else. Its local, supported by member listeners and is easily one of the most underrated things in this town. Music Nerd Fact that I learned from KFAI: You know that song "Train Kept a Rolling" made popular by Aerosmith? Well the 60's band Cream was one of the first to cover it but the original was done by Tiny Bradshaw. Yep. Each show is also available for 2 weeks after each airing via podcast. I was gonna plug a few of my favorites but I started going through the list and thought, crap! There's too many. Seriously, if you are the into music and appreciate the likes of The Current, KEXP out of Seattle or KCRW from Santa Monica, KFAI takes that and then adds some spice and takes it to a whole new level. KFAI, my darling, you're a keeper. I have six channels programmed into my car radio, and KFAI is a prominent member of that club. It's programming is diverse and completely community-oriented. They have everything from political shows to "Crap From The Past" to Caribbean pop music. I'm a big fan of the Indian/Pakistani show called Sangam---it runs on Monday nights, according to the website. The host plays the most fun Bollywood/Desi music, which is great because there isn't another local avenue to do that for a whole two hours. I really love this show. I even called in once when they played a Jermaine Jackson-Adnan Sami collaboration! I also enjoy Corazon Latino (Tuesday afternoons), Bonjour Minnesota (Sunday nights) and nearly all of the other programs that I switch through on a weekly basis while I'm cruising around. The great part is, if I don't particularly like a show, it doesn't mean the entire station is rotten. I just wait another hour or two and something new is on! read more

I started listening to this station over a year ago when I moved to the Twin Cities. I fell in love with KFAI's Sunday night and Saturday afternoon line up. I am obsessed with KFAI. OBSESSED. (I love my MPR...but, KFAI is my true blue radio soulmate.) KFAI is everything you'd want from an intensely community focused radio station. AND I MEAN EVERYTHING. The gammut of local live music updates with more information than you can manage to scribble down is de bombdotcom. KFAI has news, events, and MUSIC (podcasts, too, for the i-philes). Vintage country, crap from the past (that's an acutal program!) crazy bluegrass, blues roots, soul and funk. Democracy Now at nooner! Hmong and Somali and Scandinavian programming PLUS, their MN Soundtrack chuggin along. LOCAL LOCAL LOCAL. And now with improved bandwidth...what's not to love? If you tune in to the Sugar Shop on Fridays, you and I will be listening together. Awwwww. We're BFF's now. I am DEVOTED to Lolly. If her sweet DJ self and the mellow lovin tunes don't make you wanna take a walk on the sunny side of the street with the one you LOOOOVE you oughta have your heart examined. I am also a KFAI fanatic. I wake up to Democracy Now (5-6 am). Listen to Counterspin & Free Speech Radio when I get home from work (6-7pm). Totally dig Fubar Omniverse and Crap From the Past. Saturday I totally love Caribbean Jam, Sangam, Temposphere, RSE Radio and Strictly Butter. This station is a total gem for MSP- completely fulfills my eclectic musical desires. read more

This grouchy old man was taped in an interview with a very focused Cynthia Montana in KFAI RADIOs Minneapolis Mayoral candidate series and I enjoyed it enough that I almost smiled. She asked some really salient questions and I got a chance to make clear I was applying for a job to work for the Citizens of Minneapolis, not any special interests and that during my term I want the voters of Minneapolis to feel like they themselves are sitting in the Mayor's chair. Thanks, KFAI for being one of the few media outlets truly interested in seeing that all 35 Mayoral candidates get a chance to fully express their visions for this grand old river city! Since 1978, when the station was born, I've been listening to this community radio station. It's been a great way to find out what's playing around town, to hear very fun music, and to get alternative news. However, for those of you who've listened and loved this station through the years, it's changing as of June 30th. The Management has elected to move the locally-produced volunteer-produced morning programs off their morning 6-9am slot, and replace them with a syndicated program - five days a week. Try to listen to your favorite shows via the archives - most of them will still be airing, but not in the morning when you're used to hearing them. KFAI's website will say this was all necessary. Dig a little deeper - visit savekfai.org - you'll find a different story. It's been a fantastic station, and I'm hoping it will survive the mess it's in now. Rating? 5 stars up to now.
