Admittedly I don't listen to KFAI (90.3 fm) nearly as often as in earlier years. It may have…read moreevolved considerably over time. In fact there is a chance that at least parts are completely unrecognized by me. Regardless of its present shape, to the best of my knowledge it remains a community based, almost entirely a volunteer effort. I have found KFAI to be a source of information representing a diverse swath of voices, eclectic musical offerings and an interesting lineup of on-air talent. The signal used to be quite weak and localized. Since then I understand that it has significantly extended its reach to include most if not all of the metro. If you plan on contributing to a listener supported station, to me KFAI is well worth your consideration.

One Sunday night, many moons ago I was just this suburban punk kid. Sitting in my room in Brooklyn…read morePark, filled with teenage angst I'm sure. It was a Sunday evening, I was laying on my bed listening to the radio and probably bored. I spun the dial all the way to the left and then I slowly started moving the dial to the right on my alarm/clock radio searching for something else. It didn't take much but I suddenly stopped it here, 90.3 FM. The song playing was Romeo Void's, Never Say Never. That guitar, drums, driving beat and suddenly that sax in the chorus was tossing my entire world of what I perceived as music. And enter the rabbit hole I did because many years down the road this station is still a mainstay. It still introduces me to music and I hear news that doesn't get played or aired anywhere else. Its local, supported by member listeners and is easily one of the most underrated things in this town. Music Nerd Fact that I learned from KFAI: You know that song "Train Kept a Rolling" made popular by Aerosmith? Well the 60's band Cream was one of the first to cover it but the original was done by Tiny Bradshaw. Yep. It was a big band song back in the day and it was bad ass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci4EQDD4CqA If you haven't ever listened, they can be heard streamed via the web (they also have an app), or locally at 90.3 or 106.7. Each show is also available for 2 weeks after each airing via podcast. I was gonna plug a few of my favorites but I started going through the list and thought, crap! There's too many. Seriously, if you are the into music and appreciate the likes of The Current, KEXP out of Seattle or KCRW from Santa Monica, KFAI takes that and then adds some spice and takes it to a whole new level. You really do get a new station every couple of hours as the DJ's change. Please check them out and show them your support (ie: $$$, it's always pledge week : ) http://kfai.org/programs

I'm currently on the Current! This radio station is a National Public Radio affiliate, but it's not…read morethe typical affiliate, in that they play mostly music- cool tunes with awesome DJs who know their stuff. Most of the programming is local, with a few shows that are pre-recorded at other radio stations and played here. It's been cool listening to the Current during the Minneapolis protests over the murder of George Floyd, how they play protest music that riles up the public into action. I've never heard a NPR affiliate jam out the Rage Against the Machine followed by some Bob Dylan. The DJs all have cool stories and thoughtful things that they bring in between song sets, instead of the regular DJ who yammers about the weather or the 12th caller. Since this station is on the left side of the dial, there are no advertisements! You don't need to hear about the Minnehaha Liquor deals or how it's Truck Month again. Instead, it's all the good stuff. This station really seems to be a great addition to the community, and has been helping to heal and unite a community in pain.

I don't know how many times we heard the auto-tuned train wreck of a song, "Kiss Me Through The Phone." 'Twas rough. I can remember the days when the only major radio choices in the Twin Cities involved Clear Channel-like entities. It wasn't that long ago, because 89.3 has only been around for five years... unfortunately, I think it was long enough to make some of us feel entitled to such good radio, but it's important to remember that we are the lucky ones. Most of the country is living without such luxuries like a mainstream radio station that can play whatever they want. They have their KDWBs and their KS95s, but they do not have anything like The Current on their radio waves. Even when I was driving my friends from Chicago around, they were shocked when I told them it wasn't a mix-tape coming through the speakers... it was the radio. The Current has influenced our local music scene like crazy. They have been able to give a voice to a whole host of local bands that are typically ignored by other local radio stations until they make it big. And the DJs are so fantastic! I love Mark Wheat and Mary Lucia. When Mary Lucia and Bob Collins engage in their afternoon banter after the news, I just die. They are always cracking each other up over nothing, and it makes sitting in traffic a lot more entertaining. Now, I don't blindly (or is it deafly?) love every single track The Current plays, but they introduce me to the new, the old, the different, the independent and the local, which I can fully support---with my ears and my MPR membership dues.

I don't pretend to understand all aspects of life outside my orbit.. All of that aside, I have punched 89.9 into many a car radio (back in the day I used actual buttons but more recently have used GUI). Yes, it is a proud and self proclaimed advocate for Communities of Color. But anyone within range can listen:-) Home to R&B, Soul, HipHop, Rap (I think that RAP music comes out of HipHop culture but I'm not sure), Gospel, Reggae and others. I find that it offers a little something for most everyone. The signal has grown significantly over the years and now reaches most if not all of the metropolitan area from its broadcast tower. Another listener supported effort, I feel that you might want to give it some positive attention. I think that if one enjoys KMOJ for a while, you may want to contribute to its continued success.

It worked, I guess, as here I am writing a review! Ultimately, there's not much to say about KS95 - they play today's hit music, oftentimes repetitively (I think I've heard that stupid Africa song every day for over a month since it was on America's Got Talent), which is why I'm now leaving a 3-star review. I wish they'd mix-in some classic Gen-X tunes (a hair bands tune, maybe some 90's rock/alternative, even an old Beastie Boys rift) once in a while - that would instantly up my star-rating, as today's hits gets boring after a while. Regarding their DJ's, KS-95 is similar to any other station here in the Cities - most are good, but there are always a few where one might question whether being a DJ was the appropriate chosen profession. All-in-all, I'll continue to listen, but if you're reading this KS-95, please do me a favor and mix-in something I can't find on the other stations - some classic hits from the 90's and 00's - that'll create the niche that may set you apart from the others, and would be a welcome refreshment from what I can find on at least 4 other stations.

Oh yeah! You can review radio stations! And Radio K is my fave…read more They're on 100.7 FM and are play music for forever and commercials never. Radio K is also my favorite station because of how diverse their music is. They play everything from local artists to old school hip hop to experimental. And they're never pretentious, and seem always approachable (on the phone). I haven't interacted with them over the air or IRL ever because of COVID, but I look forward to seeing if they start up ticket giveaways or events again in the near future. Also, I am learning more about micro-genres of music like vaporwave and shoegaze, which is keeping this mama young and "with it" (?). Thanks, sorry.

Their FM signal on 100.7 is hella good and the beats, strums and the crooning of a wide range of music can be heard across the cities. It makes me happy. They also have an app which allows you to stream from where ever you have a signal. So the benefits? - 24x7 music - easy to win tix - music always changing - song stuck in your head? Call them. If they have it, it will get played quickly. - Like the tune? Call them and thank them. They actually pick up the phone. - The playlist is always changing They are THAT accessible. Plus, it's all commercial free. 24 x 7. Don't be that lemming that listens to the same shite on those "other" stations. So let me clarify some things from previous reviews. First - Rude Radio is gone (sad : ( ) Not sure who that dickish DJ was but they always changed so they probably left sooner vs later. I miss my first, second, and third wave shows on Saturday. Bring it back please! Free ticket girl. Really? You're dissing cause you were the only one who called for tix? There have been multiple times I've called when I've heard the "K" and I'm caller 2, 3, 5, and then(Wohoo!) caller 7, being the winner. The sad thing though is that with the stronger signal, those days of easy tix don't always happen (another sad face) . So for that, I thank you Radio K for sending me to many a good show which I probably wouldn't have dragged ass off the couch for. Also thank you for helping me stay quasi current in with the music scene because honestly, life gets busy and you keep me informed.
