Beautiful as the location is on a crisp morning, it's a bit of a dog track in terms of layout and conditioning. So, I was pretty excited on my recent trip to Denver that we had a tee-time up at the River Course. For a first experience of truly high-end Mountain Golf, this was a winner. Boy did we luck out - it was a perfect Fall day. Weather in the high-50's, Aspens were near peak-color, and the sky was crystal clear. Oh yeah - and I was smoking the ball on the range. I have as close to entirely positive things to say about the course as is possible. Stepping up to the first tee, a nice elevated look down over the fairway, it was clear that this is a beautiful location and a well designed and well maintained track. It's more of a resort-style course, so it is accommodating. While you can get into trouble if you stray too far, the fairways are generous and leave some margin for error. Overall, the course is fair - although there were number of holes I'd like to have a second crack at, since I might play differently with local-knowledge. The greens are fairly quick, and they are challenging. The super-star is the beautiful mountain scenery. The front nine is nice. There are some nice holes along the river, and a couple of cool elevated tee-boxes. #9 is a dramatic downhill Par-3 to end. The back-nine is off the hook. There were at least five awesome tee shots, including the fun (but frustrating) #16, and the magnificent #18 Par-5 to finish. The look down over Lake Dillon towards the range to the West is just beautiful. This is a fun place to play - and yes, the ball does fly at this elevation. If you are looking for a place to come and enjoy yourself, without driving yourself nuts, this is a good course. If you are visiting, this is easy to access, and it's a nice drive up from Denver. I believe that we also took advantage of a deal for Epic Pass (Vail Resorts - Ski Pass) Holders. $69 with a cart. Not bad for a Saturday afternoon.

There are gopher holes everywhere, so watch your step unless rolling an ankle is part of your pre-shot routine. The greens somehow have more sand than the bunkers, which is especially confusing. At times it feels like you're putting out of a sand trap no matter where your ball lands. If you're looking for smooth greens, this isn't the place. If you're looking for wildlife and an overpriced zoo, you've found it.

Smooth greens, tight fairways, and the layout rewards smart play without being brutal. It is far more polished than most munis. Slightly sad fact? The course runs beside I-70, so mountain serenity comes with a symphony of highway noise. Other private courses in the region do too, but are set back further so the decibel level is lower or insignificant. This location nevertheless is a must-play if you're anywhere near Vail.

This course is magnificent. Carved into an alpine valley and running along Gore Creek, it exemplifies mountain golf at it's best- plenty of stunning vistas and elevated tee shots. Well manicured and in great shape early in the season, it exceeded expectations. I walked on as a single and was paired with a charming couple, one of which was a college golfer (the wife)! They were on their honeymoon which explained to me why a couple was so nice to each other on the course! They both were great to be paired with but the course was the star of the show. I will be back. Great service from the pro shop, to the beer cart to the valet. Top notch.

Only snafu for me was the club rental. They have nice new Calloway rental sets. They asked if I wanted senior clubs and I said yes. Unfortunately the senior clubs were some beat up old Titleists so stay away from those. The rangers did keep play moving which I greatly appreciated. Some people spend too much time and psychic energy bonding with their golf balls and slow down play. You will definitely lose a few balls on this course so just expect it, live with it and keep moving. With the thick vegetation and the meandering creek these balls are gone forever so just let them go. II'd play here again anytime!

When my buddy had his bachelor party here though, I just had to suck it up and hit the links. As much as I hate this game I've gotta give credit to the best place I've ever played at. Pole Creek has three courses all surrounded by Rocky Mountain beauty so even if you're as terrible as I am, the natural surroundings will provide you with a sense of serenity so you don't drive your cart into a water hazard. Outside of the immaculate fairways and greens the staff is incredibly nice. On several occasions a marshal came by to either offer advice or help find a lost ball. (which there was a record number of) He even took a couple of pictures for us which was by far the best shot I was a part of in the round. They rent some really nice Titleist clubs for only about $30 and beers and food are pretty affordable compared to other courses I've ever played. Overall Pole Creek is worth the price of admission just based on the scenery alone. If you're actually a good golfer, I bet you'll love it too.
