How does one review a good local branch of a terrible national company?…read more Last time I refinanced my home mortgage, the original lender sold the loan -- to Wells Fargo. (No, we didn't choose them.) It was fine for quite a few years, but with the latest escrow adjustment my automatic payment didn't get adjusted correctly, and my payment went short by the difference between the old payment and the new. What did the national company do? Call with a courtesy reminder? No -- I got a call from collections threatening foreclosure! Wife and I rushed to this branch to straighten things out. The teller called over a manager (I think) to work with us. The national didn't provide any mechanism for branches to help; the branch banker had to phone the national through same phone tree customers are stuck with, and was stuck on hold just like a customer. Eventually the national answered and gave the branch person numbers to fix the account for the back balance and the new monthly payment. All good. For one month. National changed the escrow again, and we got another pay-or-else call. Back to the branch, and the same person helped again, waiting on hold again, and getting numbers. We deposited the shortfall and paid the next month. Then another escrow letter! This time we had overpaid. A check was attached. Last week, another pay-or-else call from national. No panic this time. We're used to it. Today I cashed the check at this branch, phoned national myself, and deposited the difference. Employees were helpful. So, a three-star "A-OK" for the branch. They're good, but I like my regular bank better. National Wells Fargo? My experience is a two-star "not so good" -- but at least they haven't scammed me like the big scandal that was in the news. I think I'll refinance again, just to get away from Wells Fargo national.

First the banker tried to talk me into getting an account with BoA, which was not what I was there for. They tried to convince me by saying that it would make it easier to do the power of attorney part, which might be true, but still not helpful and I had already clearly expressed that I was not interested. Once I got the banker back on track, we filled out the forms (they have their own documents in addition to the legal documents you provide, which is normal). They even made up an envelope to mail everything out FedEx. They said I would hear from BoA with a response (either accepted or not accepted). Well, I never heard from them, neither by phone nor email nor any other way, and neither did the account owner. I called the bank, but they couldn't provide information. I emailed the banker I worked with (they provided their email to me specifically for follow up questions); they did not even respond after multiple attempts to contact. I cannot recommend doing any serious banking beyond simple deposits/withdrawals (basically stuff you could do at an ATM) with this branch.

What a great experience I had today at WaFd Bank. (Yes a little confusing still because I think…read morethey are in the middle of a name change. The original company name was Washington Federal.) I went into the branch today to open a new checking account. Their checking account has some really cool features I haven't seen at other banks. With their Green checking account you get discount movie tickets, coupons for travel, a credit check service and best of all mobile phone insurance. I used to have AT&T mobile phone insurance that costs $15 a month. With WaFd Bank's green checking account I can get that for $7 a month plus all this other stuff. I had no idea, definitely a well kept secret. Anytime we can help local companies vs the large conglomerate like AT&T, sign me up. Keep up the great work WaFd Bank!

I rented a safe deposit box at the Washington Federal branch in Redmond and when I moved to Seattle I closed it two years ago by going into the branch to return my keys and sign the cancelation form. For the past two years I have received multiple bills for the safe deposit box.The first year I called the branch, which confirmed the account was closed, and they said I wouldn't receive another bill. A few weeks later, I received a late noticel. Since then I've repeatedly called the Customer Care Center and am told the account is open. When I explain the account is closed and that I need the billing situation resolved, they say that they will email the branch and follow up with me. No one has ever followed up. My last conversation with Customer Care was about a month ago and I received another bill today. If Washington Federal can't figure out how to close a simple safe deposit box, I wonder how they can be trusted with more complex financial issues? It's not a risk I'm willing to take.
