I came here based on the stellar 4.6 rating and 150+ reviews, but most of the rave reviews seem to be from 2-6 years ago, before the place changed hands. I ordered the Cuban sandwich, and unfortunately, it was a miss -- maybe a 3/10 at best. The meat was lukewarm, the cheese wasn't melted, and the bread wasn't buttery or crisp -- just a bit hard from the panini press. The pickles were solid, and the mustard was tangy and balanced, but those were the only highlights of the sandwich. I did have a cortadito while waiting, and that was excellent. The coffee, croquetas, and baked goods looked promising -- I might come back to try those instead. But if you're coming specifically for the Cuban sandwich, I'd head to Sanguich in Little Havana -- that one's a 9/10 in my book. read more

This place is legit. I came here around noon on a Thursday. They have a walk up order window that has a few chairs for while you're waiting or if you want to eat outside. Inside has 2 chairs as well. I ordered the famous Cuban, a Cafe con Leche sweetened, and a pastel de coconut. Prices were very reasonable, and the sandwich was huge. It took a little bit to get the food because they make the sandwiches to order and it was a bit busy, but definitely worth the wait, and the people working were super friendly. The sandwich had the perfect amount of everything and it all played together beautifully. The coffee was strong and had good flavor and wasn't too overly sweet when they sweetened it. I am really growing to love dining at gas stations. Key West Cuban Cafe is located in a Citgo. It is the kind of place that is a locals favorite. It kept popping up on my Yelp feed so I stopped by for lunch when I was in the area today. They are building a new residential complex next door so there is a lot of construction. The cafe has a front window so you don't have to go into the gas station unless you want to pay with a card or grab a drink. You can pay cash at the window. I picked the Monte Cristo made with thick slices of ham and grilled cheese ($8). It was a giant grilled sandwich that came with pickles and chips. I could only finish half. I also wanted a guava pastel which Eric added for free. While I waited for my food he brewed me up a cup of Cuban coffee and then even gave me one to go for later. The food is awesome but the real gem in this place is the owner Eric. He instantly makes you feel like you are hanging out with a long time friend. While I was waiting for my food a mom walked up with her little daughter who was also gifted with free pastry. She said she was Cuban and found her way here through word of mouth from other Cuban friends. That is a high recommendation but you don't have to be Latin to love it here. Being lactose intolerant yet craving for a good Cuban coffee they were so accommodating when I asked if there was a possibility I can substitute the 'milk' for a non dairy option. I've tried giving this place a chance after the old owners left and it's just not the same. The coffee is just as bad as when the new owners took over a year ago. Same with the Cuban sandwiches. The flavor is not there besides the mustard and the prices for everything have gone up. A medium crappy coffee is $5 now when you could get a large else for the same price. I'd check out the little coffee shop down the road. The food and coffee is amazing there. And yes, they do serve cafe con leches and empanadas as well . So, this place is located in the Citgo station on the corner of 6th street and US 1 in Pompano. You can park in a corner of the station and walk over to the window or park by the post office alley and walk from there. It's strictly a "to go" spot. Eric has his regulars -- those that come for Cuban coffees... and caffe con leches. He knows who takes it black and how much milk they want, etc. As I was waiting for my order, he also gave mini coffees to all of us. I had to give mine to the guy I was standing next to... as I knew it would be too strong for me. But everyone around me was saying how good it was. In addition to sandwiches, there are Cuban pastries (I saw the guava ones), empanadas and croquettes. They also list a few complete meals on the paper menu pasted to the window. Prices are very reasonable on all items. Eric sliced the ham and pork freshly in front of me. Heated both up. Piled on the pickles and mustard and meats and then press grilled the bread. Along side in the take out container, he placed a few more pickle chips and potato sticks. And he cut it in half diagonally as traditionally they are.... To pay, I put cash in the little glass jar out front and he gave me change. I have no idea if he accepts credit cards. As soon as I got in the car, I couldn't resist taking a bite of my media noche. Don't skimp on the Jimmy joints! Hen we finally found this tiny spot we almost didn't purchase. If you blink you won't find it. It's at the CITGO station in the corner. I was desperate ant honestly, it reminded me of my trip to Cuba where the places were shabby but the cafe con Leche was heavenly. Same here. We are self proclaimed coffee snobs and will be back in the morning to get another cup. They close at 3pm. Note, if they would clean up and spruce up the place a bit and offer iced coffee and market the brand from the street level I bet they'd really do well. read more

But if you want the best Cuban sandwich around and at a bargain price, this is one of the best places around. I had their Cuban with Serrano ham and found it to be really good, especially at $7.50. They have about have about 6 other sandwich choices including a Cuban Sloppy Joe (it's actually a traditional Pan con Picadillo). There is also a good selection of coffees. Walk-up counter service, this little joint is packed with authentic Cuban flavor. I started with a ham croquette, it was served over potato sticks (awesome touch) and literally just melted in my mouth. Next I tried their Medianoche sandwich. It had Serrano ham, two types of pork, melted swiss, mustard & pickles. It took a few minutes as it was made fresh, but absolutely worth the wait! I sat on one of their stools and watched many locals come for their daily cafe con leche fix so of course I had to try a cafecito. It was only a $1! I ordered a guava and cream cheese pastelito for the road, it will be my dessert for later as I was too full to enjoy there. This lovely little cafe was the highlight of our trip to Pompano Beach, Florida. It is attached to a CITGO gas station. The staff was so friendly. My sister and I tried all pastries along with a chicken and a ham and cheese empanada. The chicken was awesome. Han was ok. All of the guava stuff was amazing. The cheese and coconut pastries were lovely but not as flavorful. They have a few stools outside. The croquets were fun too. We didn't try the coffee which most people were stopping for. When Eric ran and owned it, you would walk up, he'd give you a fist pound, ask how ya been and then you order your cuban sando and while you wait, he'd give you a cortadito. It was all part of the experience. The bread came from his abuela in Hialeah and the sandwich was perfect. They told me inside that he has since sold the business. My first frustration was that they didn't answer their phone so we couldn't place an order for pickup. Or Confirm they were even open. My husband went anyway and then called to ask if I knew it is in a gas station. I didn't but that is not a deal breaker. I've had some great food from restaurants in gas stations. He ordered two Cubans and some ham Croquettes. I could pass on the ham Croquettes. Just wanted to try them. The Cuban sandwiches were very large and priced very reasonably. I didn't eat but had but I didn't particularly like it. The ham is sliced pretty thick which means they sliced a real ham to make the sandwich but I prefer thin sliced ham. This place is attached to a gas station and has a small counter to order food. The person behind the counter was singing while he made coffee! He clearly was loving his job! I was recently at the Executive airport around the corner when hunger hit me. So I went on yelp to see what was close by. What caught my attention on this place was the high score of 5 stars. So I decided to go and grab a sandwich as most reviews stated. The 1st thing I encountered was the small u assuming window on the side of the gas station. Then you see all their empanadas and other confections they have for sale. Then I placed an order with the guy behind the window. I'm going to assume he owns this place. Nice guy. He offered me a free cortadito(coffee shot), and it was de-licious. It took maybe 5 minutes for my order to be ready. When I picked up the box with my sandwich, the 1st thing I noticed was how heavy it was. This sandwich wasn't playing. It actually had thick slices of ham and actual pork loin. This thing was THE bomb ! Now I understand why the reviews are so high. The flavor on that Sandwhich was Incredible and the folks that work there are super nice! I came here (thanks to my trusted Yelpers) because my boss told me if I could find an authentic Cuban sandwich in Broward, he'd give me a raise. Well, I'm richer today thanks to Eric, and the amazing food he puts out in very short order, in a small space attached to a CITGO gas station. If I hadn't experienced it myself, I would be hesitant to believe you could get REALLY GOOD Cuban coffee next to a gas station, not to mention the "best Cuban I've had since I moved up from Dade", according to my supervisor. Eric gave me a delicious cup of coffee, gratis, while I waited at the window. There are a few picnic style tables nearby, so so you can eat there, if you choose. When I got my colada, black, it was perfection in a cup! While I waiting for the Cuban sandwich (made with imported German Swiss cheese, two different types of pork, kosher mustard and a bunch of other quality ingredients that Eric explained to me) I watched this man CLEAN his counter space, his cooking area, his coffee machine....even though the little space was immaculate to begin with. He put on gloves when he put down the cleaning stuff and went back to food prep. So, not only is the food delicious, but it's prepared in an immaculate little space, called Key West Cafe, by a gentleman who obviously has a passion for what he does everyday, from 7 am to 3 pm every day except Sunday.
