When we asked to sample the ube flavor, she initially gave us two samples and then went to get a third. I offered my sample to our friend, but she immediately told me that she was fine and wanted the third sample instead. When the employee returned with the third sample, she commented, "Wow, that's not very gentleman-like, not giving your sample to your girlfriend first." Our friend immediately explained that she had specifically told me it was okay and that she wanted the third sample. Despite that, the employee continued making assumptions about the situation. Then, when our friend paid for the ice cream, the employee commented, "Wow, now you're making her pay too." At that point, I told her that was enough. The entire interaction felt unnecessarily judgmental and inappropriate. Not only did she assume that our female friend was my girlfriend, but she also seemed to assume that, as a man, I should be responsible for paying for her and that I should automatically prioritize her over my boyfriend and our friendship. It's 2026, and people shouldn't have to conform to outdated assumptions about gender roles, relationships, or who is supposed to pay for whom. Women are perfectly capable of paying for themselves, and friends can certainly treat each other however they choose without being judged by an employee. What should have been a simple, enjoyable first visit for ice cream instead became an uncomfortable experience because of unsolicited comments and assumptions about our relationships. We were respectful toward the employee throughout the interaction, and we expected the same in return. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we will probably not be returning and will be sharing our experience with our friends and family. There are plenty of other ice cream options out there.
