My husband and I went out with Mike twice last week…read more I REALLY love snorkeling but hate those crowded party boats, so I was looking for a more personalized way to go. Most charter boats seem to be in the $500+ range for a half day. Mike charges not by the hours but by the number of people, taking 2-6 per trip. So, just two of us for a snorkeling trip was just $160. I consider that a real bargain for having a boat all to ourselves! The first day we were to go snorkeling the conditions were not good for it. The water was too choppy and cloudy. Mike suggested a sunset cruise. We accepted. He will let you take whatever food or drink aboard that you want. We didn't have anything but sure wished we had some wine and cheese for the beautiful evening. The horizon was cloudy and we didn't expect much of a sunset, but Mike kept saying "wait and see". Sure enough, there was one opening in the clouds exactly where the sun was setting. It was gorgeous. We even saw the rare and infamous Green Flash! The two hour trip was $110. We were to try a snorkeling trip again two days later, but weather still was not good. But Mike kept in touch with us and as things improved he let us know when it would be good to go. He easily could have taken us to the site at our first scheduled time and said "oh well, not my fault the water is cloudy and choppy for snorkeling," but he wanted us to have a great experience so waited until the time was right. He is not out to steal your money, he honestly wants you to have the best time possible! Again, sure enough, Mike took us to the reef at exactly the right time! The water was calm and clear and we had one of our best snorkeling experiences ever anywhere in the world. When we got out of the water some squalls were appearing. Mike threaded us through them expertly on our way back in. Mike is extremely in tune with the tides, the weather, the moon. He has sailed all over the world for all his life. He will take you out when YOU want to go. No set schedules. We hope to sail with Mike again someday!

One of the participants on our boat did exactly that and she enjoyed herself on both trips. The boat went to different locations on each day, so repeat snorkeler was able to see different parts of the reef. Paradise Island Charters is a small boat that holds only 15 people, and we had 11 on our trip. The sales rep at the dock said the limited capacity allows for a more personal trip with more attention from the crew. This was very much the case as we had a couple of newbies with us and First Mate Al was able to provide them with a lot of assistance (& patience!) Al was very knowledgeable about the fish, the reef, and the overall snorkeling process. She was personable and seemed to enjoy her job very much. She even gave us a few good suggestions for places to dine in Key Largo. Captain Doug was friendly, knowledgeable, and very safety-conscious. He was also an amazing captain. He spotted a family of dolphins and skillfully turned his boat in large circles at just the right speed so that the dolphins could safely frolic in the boat's wake. What an amazing sight! We watched the dolphins jumping for several minutes until they swam off. Thank you Captain Doug for that awesome show! Unfortunately the snorkeling was exciting but not for the best of reasons: numerous jellyfish were floating in the area and we spent a lot of time trying to avoid them. Although the coral and the fish were great to see, the abundance of jellyfish was a big distraction. And some of the snorkelers were stung. If you are comparing snorkeling tour operators, please be aware that Paradise Island Charters does not include the snorkeling equipment in the base price of their tours. They do offer prescription snorkel masks for people who wear glasses. Overall, the trip was really fun and I would recommend this company to other snorkelers. Doug and Al are a key part of their success.
