I can't say enough good things about this dental office and the team. Everyone in this office has been extremely helpful and kind. Since it had been about 5 years since I've been to the dentist (not good, I know...), I decided to get a teeth cleaning and exam to make sure things looked okay. Nelly cleaned my teeth and she did an amazing job, was so nice and explained everything she did. Most importantly she made sure I was comfortable to entire time. My exam was done by Michael O' Brien. He was very thorough and I appreciated that he not only explained everything to me but even took the time to show me with a camera what he was seeing. I ended up needing a couple fillings. I went back a couple weeks later for these. After my appointment, that same evening after the office closed Michael took the time to call me to check and ensure I was doing okay and not experiencing any discomfort! I've had about eight dentists romping around inside my mouth - a new one every six years or so. I have never been truly happy with any of them. They have been not good or okay or "oh my god I hate that guy", but never "wow". Dr. O'Brien is a "wow". I don't think of myself as high maintenance - rather I think of myself as low maintenance as possible to get the job done. But on the other hand I'm not a blindly trusting person either. I want to know _why_ I should do this or that and so dentists have always been a bit of a quandary. They climb inside there and dig around and then come back out and say "you need a new cap" or something. Half the time I think to myself - how the heck do I trust this person? And then I submit and get drilled. O'Brien has spoiled me. He showed me every tooth in video on a camera. All the nooks and crannies, cracks, fissures, stains, the works. It's a whole world in there that he has shared with me. Whenever he wants to drill and fill or whack and cap he takes me on a walk before hand. Then when he's grinding away he stops, hands me a mirror and gleefully says "take a look at this cool hole I just dug!" I hold the mirror up, he points and pontificates. Then he gets some magical space age goo and stuffs it in there and grinds and bakes and chisels a bit and stops - handing me the mirror again. I look and I don't see a thing. It looks like a new piece of tooth magically reappeared sans crack or cavity. It is magic, and he is a magician. Very good staff, prompt and courteous. A phone call the night after every procedure. The only down side is he doesn't have a spit-sink - his assistant does a hose and suck routine instead. There is a water bottle and cups and a bathroom and sink because I'm a baby, though. I'll never go to a different dentist. He is an artist. A+ read more

Long story short back in 2013 Dr O'Brien was my dentist when I lived in the pocket area. After injuring his shoulder playing golf he decided to pull one of my teeth. At that time, I had faith in his judgment and felt everything was going to turn out ok. However, Dr O'Brien ended up snapping my tooth which resulted in great pain. While I was waiting for Dr O'Brien to find a surgeon who could take me immediately his staff told me I would not have to pay my portion of the copay due to Dr O'Brien's shoulder being injured. I then had to travel across town to a dental surgeon to have the rest of the tooth extracted. Once I arrived at the Surgeon he felt Dr O'Brien should have never attempted to extract the teeth. I never returned back to Dr O'Brien's office and had long put this painful memory behind me until today when I discovered his office had sent me to collection. -11/3 Update, I've called his office multiple times now with no one answering. I'm assuming they screen calls. When I called blocked they picked up, but when I stated who I was they hung up. read more

I spoke with Dr. O'Brien who kindly explained that I can request a particular hygienist and apologized for the experience I had during my latest cleaning. He was polite and gracious. I should mention that my husband has had good experiences with Dr. O'Brien and he's had more appointments than me. After my husband had his cavity filled the last time, Dr. O'Brien personally called to make sure my husband's OK and not in pain that night. I was very impressed as I've never had any dentist do that for me from my recollection nor have I seen any do that for my parents when I was growing up. The last time I went, he was using a program to take a look at x-rays of my teeth and determine if there may be any carries forming ... totally worth it in comparison to one I went to recently where they still used the small x-rays and they said I had no problems. I am very disappointed in my first visit. My mother was the one who described that she enjoyed this place and being that my mom is terrified of going to the dentist, I took a chance. I had my appointment today along with my mom, and I didn't even make it to the back because there were red lights and sketchy behavior here by the staff. Both my mother and I have really great insurance provided by our school District, and have never paid a dime at any previous Dentist offices. However, before they called my mom in they said she owed $88 for her filling. Then they said the total for her crown today would be $309. When we spoke to the manager she said there was a mix up and instead that we owed $309 for the filling and $88 for today's service. I mentioned that it was wrong that we never received an estimate prior to the service and received a good faith by the dentist and the staff that there would be no charge for her filling. Now we are being charged about $400. This is very sketchy to me. When I questioned the manager why they didn't inform my mom of the price before all she could say is they "didn't know" and that Dr. O'Brien felt like it was necessary so he acted on his decision. My issue with all of this is that they made a decision without my mother's consent. Plus, they made no investigation into our insurance plan to tell us an estimate. My mother is a hard working single mother who doesn't have the means to spit out $400 for dental services. So I'm sure she will not be back. Ultimately, this experience led me to ask for my paperwork back, and I told them I didn't want to be seen at this place. I really thought this experience was going to be different but it ended up being like all my previous dental experiences. All they want is your money. How unfortunate. I definitely will not be a patient here and my mother is rethinking her experience. read more

I can't believe that it's taken me so long to enter Dr. OBrien into yelp. I think it's because I may have wanted to keep the best kept secret to "within co-workers" and family. Referred by co-workers, some of the most interesting folks, very picky, some just good consumers. At any rate, I would travel miles and miles to see Dr. OBrien. He is just the best. My husband and I are raising a special needs child (autism) and I recently switched from a very specialized dentist in CH to Dr. O"Brien. Yesterday, what I witnessed was absolute magic. I knew the kiddo would be kicking and screaming but everything was explained to him in terms that he could relate to (at 5 years old!) and he had no fear. He squirmed but it was okay with him, it was just the unknown. Later last night after being sent home with a "dentist" packet of his own, the kiddo played "dentist" on his dinos so that they didn't have decay. He put in a shield, tooth pillow, and used gloves. I am always "overly pleased" with Dr. O'Brien and his excellent staff. They are always pleasant and ON TIME. I rarely if ever, even wait five minutes. And, I love the waitlist they have. So, even if you have an appointment in the future, if an opening pops up in either a day or hours' time, they will call you to see if you want to come in earlier; sometimes it's great timing and works out, other times I have to pass, but to have the option is convenient. I used to dread going to the dentist, like many, but since I've been a patient here, I'm ok with the idea. I get a little "performance" anxiety when I sit in the chair, but staff always comforts me. And, Dr. O'Brien's calming demeanor is very soothing. Dr O'Brien is a perfectionist and the quality of his work reflects that. Dr O'Brien himself even calls hours after appointments when I have "procedures" performed to make sure everything's ok. I have been meaning to write this review and finally found time to! I have been with Dr. O' Brien for only 2 months now. In that time he has done my teeth cleaning and seilants/fillings (fillers? not sure what they were called). My first time there I was nervous and unsure of what to expect (just moved out to sacramento by myself as a college student). The front desk lady (Angel or Elizabeth) was very friendly and welcoming. Before my appointment, Dr. O'Brien himself even came out to the waiting room to greet me! That alone calmed my worries :). During my cleaning, he explained everything in detail, and answered all of my questions. They have this machine where you can actually see the inside of your mouth with this small camera device; This was very impressive!. The dental assistants are very very very friendly too. I dont remember the name of the lady who I have had for both of my appointments but she is so so so so so sweet and gentle when working on my mouth! During my second appointment, I had to get seilants and fillings which required some local anesthesia. Dr. O'Brien and his assistant were extremely gentle and took their time during my appointment, not rushing at all! :) I left with no pain other than my cheeks and part of my lip numb, but thats no big deal. Later tonight as I was driving home from class, I received a call from Dr. O'Brien himself! He called to check up on me to make sure I was in no pain, and wasn't experiencing tenderness of any sort. I feel like I wrote a dissertation right now, sorry! But honestly if anyone is considering switching dentists, I highly recommend Dr. O'Brien! Although I barely know him (lol) I can tell he is very passionate about his work and knows what he's doing :). Definitely 5 stars for Dr. O'Brien and his superb staff :)! My husband (a retired Prosthodontist) and I first met Dr. O'Brien about 2 years ago when he volunteered with us in Guatemala. We were so moved by his professional ability, moral and ethical values that we switched dentist. Now we drive from San Francisco to Sacramento to see him. Surprisingly, one more of our board members who also met Dr. O'Brien in Guatemala, switched his dentist as well without talking to us. Now he drives from San Leandro to Sacramento. Dr. O'Brien is competent, his office staff are amazingly friendly, efficient, and helpful. I was surprised one evening to get a call from him and thought something went wrong with his wife (by now my dear friend). It turned out he was calling to see if my husband and I are doing ok with some work that had to get done in our mouth. I looked at my husband and he said, "Yes, I did that too, in my practice. Called the patients to follow up". Too bad I never had my husband as my dentist. That was a totally new thing to me. Of course I was moved. I am a Physicist and I want to "know" everything. Who likes to go to the dentist? I do! Thanks to Dr. O'Brien. I have been coming to his office for 30 years. My teeth have been totally babied by him and his staff for most of my adult life. And speaking of babies, my 31-year old son also grew up with Dr. O'Brien's office--going from the days of relentless "picking and scratching" (as my son used to say) to high-tech (and painless!) cleaning. The hygienists are perfectionists and always raise the bar just a tiny bit higher to make sure the chops stay healthy and in place (without the dreaded lecture). Results? So far, so good: I have happy teeth, thanks to them. Dr. O'Brien himself is an artist. He modestly gives credit to his staff and an excellent lab, but he gently does the most delicate work with fillings and crowns with an astonishing precision after a thorough explanation every step of the way. No pain! No anxiety (and I did have a "Little Shop of Horrors" dental experience in my youth, so this is saying a lot)! He always checks in after a procedure to make sure everything is OK. I recommend him to everyone needing a dentist and even referred my 90-year-old dad (who loves him and his staff). For years I avoided any dentist because of a bad encounter with a previous dentist that left me frightened and determined to avoid dental at all cost. Of course that was unrealistic so my good friend/co-worker spoke of her dentist...Dr. Michael O'Brien. A second co-worker joined in the conversation and said Dr. O'Brien was his dentist too. The two of them couldn't say enough kind words! What??? Well, I made an appointment and the rest is history. Now I'm a fan! I've been a patient of Dr. O'Brien for years now and today I'm retired.
