My experience with Dr. Ko has been remarkable. I had a dental emergency (severe pain) on a Sunday evening and called him, he met me down at the office and opened up shop and numbed me up, drilled away the cavities, and sent me home with prescriptions. The following day, he sent me a text message from his cell phone to ask how I was feeling. Wow, never met a dentist or doctor with this amount of compassion. Dr. Ko is very knowledgeable and passionate dentistry. He works quickly and explains the procedures as he's performing them. I typically have had trouble with dentists being able to properly numb me up in the past, I told Dr. Ko this and he takes extra time to ensure that I cannot feel any discomfort during the procedure. I found Dr Ko on a Friday afternoon. I suddenly had a toothache at lunch time. That's when I learned the majority of dentists take Friday afternoons off. Dr Ko was able to fit me in at the end of the day. He did enough drilling to relieve the pressure and the pain. I have been going to him for a few years now. Dr Ko recently repaired a cavity under a crown. He now has equipment to make make a replacement crown on site within a half of an hour. The cavity and crown was completed with the one appointment. Dr. Ko is The best dentist I've ever been to and I'm not so young so I've been to a few in my lifetime. His male assistant is also very good. I've had a partial crown, filings, and broken tooth fixed. Since I'm picky about dental work, I requested that I have a dental damn and air for my nostrils during my mercury filing removal. Dr.Ko is my fav dentist. First of all he is a pro dentist and knows how to fix your problem! It sounds ridiculous but seriously not all the dentists know how to fix their patients' problems(they pretend they do tho lol) Secondly he cares 'what you need' and 'what you can do'. It's extremely important for dentist. I'm so over with the dentists telling me 'oh you should do all these things' all the time. Through all my visits I've learned from Dr.Ko 'at least what I should do' 'what I really need to do right now' or 'if financially capable I can think about X next year', etc. It's clear, logical and gives me flexibilities on what I want to do. I also appreciate their transparent payment plan sheet. I used to have dentist telling me 'oh we don't know how much you will spend until you complete all the treatment. ' (man not even roughly?!) I laughed like 'ok I'm not stupid enough to do this shit' LMAO Waiting time is fairly ok as long as you make an appointment. And two weeks in advanced is recommended. read more

Dr. Ko is hands down the BEST dentist! There is no doubt his knowledge and skills are impeccable, and furthermore, his bed side manner is genuine and professional. He truly cares about his patients, and not just their teeth, but their whole well being. He never rushes and is always honest. Also his office staff is amazing, they break down all costs and estimates, they even take the time to explain insurance policies for each individual. Dr. Ko seems like a very good dentist, but there were a few things that gave me a bad feeling about this place, and made me decide to go all the way back into San Francisco to my former dentist: 1) The availability of appointments is VERY limited -- even if you have an urgent situation. Booking a cleaning takes about a month, and I needed to get in right away after almost half of my tooth broke off, and the earliest they could schedule me was five days away. 2) It feels like they care more about getting paid, than they care about taking care of your teeth. I realize they need to get paid, yes of course. But -- they were much more concerned about getting my copayment and pre-authorizing treatment plans, than trying to get me in to actually see Dr. Ko. 3) Yes...the front office staff is nice, but actually unprofessional. It sort of feels like you're talking with a nice child, not a professional. You'll see what I mean. Sorry Dr. Ko -- you seem like a solid dentist, but having to wait five days after half my tooth broke off and was tearing up the inside of my mouth was unacceptable for me. I called up my former dentist in San Francisco, and they're actually moving around other, less-critical appointments in order to see me in the next 24-hours. And -- it'll be done in one visit, and splitting up the copayments over time is fine -- they just want to take care of the tooth first. For anyone interested, Dr. Curt Facchino in SF is terrific and worth the trip into the City. read more

I went to Dr. Ko based on the great Yelp reviews. On a positive note, I was happy with my dental care there - I had a cleaning and exam and then 2 fillings. I thought Dr. Ko and his staff were very nice. However, I cannot recommend this dental practice. I got a treatment plan for my fillings with a cost estimate. The actual cost ended up being MUCH higher because my insurance didn't even cover the type of fillings I had done. Dr. Ko is in network for my insurance - Delta Dental - AND his office called to check my coverage. So I trusted the cost estimate, I had no reason not to. Of course, Dr. Ko blames Delta Dental for not giving his office the right info and Delta Dental blames Dr. Ko's office for not asking the right questions, but in the end it's me that is stuck with an extra bill. Dr. Ko did try to help - he personally called me at one point and he also only held me liable for half of the extra bill. It wasn't enough though. The response time from his office was very slow - almost 2 weeks to get back to me in the first place and my most recent email asking questions over a week ago is still unanswered. If Dr. Ko is going to provide cost estimates to his patients he should stick by them unless something changes in the treatment (I need a root canal instead of a filling or something). Otherwise, just tell me to call insurance myself rather than telling me you've done it for me and then sticking me with the extra bill when you were wrong! read more

I like most people really dislike going to the dentist. To my own detriment, I avoided it for several years. At my sisters recommendation who was and RDA intern in his office a few years ago, I bit the bullet and scheduled an appt. I'm so glad he did for a few reasons: A) He was recommended as a great dentist with the latests technology which made the visits much easier to tolerate for someone who hates getting work done. B) He's good to his employees. This is something that's really important to me. I think it says something about a person who is respectful to those in their employ. Generally a sign of an all around good person. C) Both A & B proved to be true. He is a gentle dentist who is clearly knowledgable and highly skilled. He is conservative in his recommendations and I never felt like he was trying to "upsell" me treatments I didn't need despite how easy this could have been considering how I had neglected my teeth. You probably hate going to the dentist. But you will have an impossible time finding a more pleasant and competent staff. Dr. Ko was able to easily fix a stubborn problem that my former dentist struggled with (some root canal with an ill-fitting crown). Having recently moved to Walnut Creek, I didn't have a dentist. A crown came off crewing on some brownings over a weekend. I looked on Yelp and found Dr. Ko who's office was only a five-minute drive away and all the reviews on Yelp were great. I called his office on Monday morning when they opened at 8, they took me instantly, and by 9:30 my crown was back in my mouth ready for more brownies. What a great, quick job. I moved and needed to find a dentist closer to home. So of course I turned to Yelp for recommendations. I saw that Dr. Ko had fantastic ratings and my PCP back home who I loved had the same last name. When I arrived, the receptionist was very friendly and welcomed me to the practice. Dr. Ko was fabulous! He was very friendly told me about himself, answered all the questions I had and he was very thorough. He explained everything he was going to do, made recommendations and just made me feel very comfortable and important as a patient. I had a great experience and loved the little gift bag which included an electric toothbrush! His staff also sent out a welcome letter which was a very nice touch. Kevin is great. He's my mothers dentist and I've also had him as my dentist before and he does great work and is very patient and will explain what he does fully and why. Only con is that his services are pretty expensive and he's not in a lot of Dental Plans last time I checked. It would be great if he offered an in-office membership/insurance. I have always hated the dentist and being a medical management consultant I am very critical of how they run. When I came in, I have never been treated so well by the office staff in a Dentist office. They were friendly and extremely accommodating. Dr. Ko was not only professional but had a great sense of humor. I ended up finding out I had two cavities (and sense I never had any before) I was pretty terrified. They walked me through the whole process, let me know what the best and worst outcomes could be and after filling my second cavity yesterday, he called my house this morning to see how I was doing. Not his staff, Dr. Ko himself. Anyone looking for a dentist in the Walnut Creek area should definitely choose Dr. Ko. I was a patient a number of years ago. Dr. Ko was very professional and highly skilled. He was a really nice person in addition. I appreciate him even more now that I don't have dental insurance. I have gone to a couple of other dentists that lure you in with low cost cleaning and xrays. Then it is very high pressure up-selling. Very uncomfortable - and expensive. Plus with each of these dentists, I got a totally different report on mysterious problems with my teeth and treatment plans with thousands of dollars of dental work I supposedly needed. I have never, never had these kind of checkups in the past. I really trust Dr Ko. He never pulled this kind of high pressure technique when I was his patient. read more

Called this morning inquiring about becoming a new patient. I was asked what insurance I have which is: Met-life Federal Dental Insurance and was DENIED as "quota" was reached. I believe my dental insurance is pretty good insurance. I guess having 17 years of Federal service working with our Veterans at the VAMC San Francisco doesn't mean much these days. Wow, deflating. I'm Dr. Ko is a great Dentist, but turning down those who serve our Vets and those providing Federal Service to the Dept. of Veteran Affairs for 17 years doesn't mean much. Yup - Dr. Ko gets that extra star now. I had two fillings right up front that have been discolored over years of eating, drinking and living. I asked if they could change that and they said sure no problem. I was a little nervous because these are right up front, you screw those up and I'm embarassed to smile for life. And I was already hesitant to smile showing that area because of discoloration. Well I bit the bullet, made an appointment and was SUPER amazed! I was in and out WITH novacaine in less than an hour and my "patch" matched my teeth flawlessly. Another fantastic appointment! Now I'm trying to convince my co-worker to go because she's not too thrilled about her dentist. I have a deep pocket behind the last tooth of my lower right jaw and was told I needed gum surgery. I wanted to consult Dr. Ko for a second opinion but had an upcoming trip to LA. A few days before my trip, I called in and to my surprise they were able to schedule me in with such late notice. I went in the day before my trip and Dr. Ko was very nice; he spent the time to explain to me everything he saw and gave me sound advice. As I was taking off, his next patient had arrived. I heard him say: "I'll be with you in a few minutes, let me wolf something down really quick." That was when I realized he had given up his lunch break to fit me in.
