Most times, you are 50 feet or more from the lake. Even so, it is hard to believe a trail exists so close to Broadway. Just don't set your expectations high. Upon reaching the lake, I would go left. It is a loop so it really doesn't matter, but the eastern side is more naturalistic with a view. It is the closest point of contact with the lake. If you go the other way, you abruptly come to a residential neighborhood and most head up the block to continue the trail. Picnic tables and playground on the other end (midpoint). As a side note, how are lakes the size of ponds and reservoirs the size of lakes around here?

A few benches are available but shade is lacking depending on the time of year you visit. The only frequent visitors are Geese. Think Sloan's lake amounts of poop but in a more dense area. It's a beautiful state but when you're working, you don't always have time to see the sights. This was one of those trips and I was going a little stir crazy. I had considered going to RMNP again but this time of year it's timed entry only. Flagstaff is one of my favorite towns so I figured the mountain would be pretty cool too. I was right. The drive up the mountain is free and mountainy. What does mountainy mean? It's steep, twisty, and locals tailgate you as you white knuckle it to the top. But damn the views are impressive. I highly recommend this quick trip.

The trail seems to be popular for trail running and biking, but you cannot bike here on Wednesday/Saturday. So those days are the best for hikers. There are also picnic areas available for picnicking as well! Plenty of shade for cooling down, too. The only downside is parking. There are two VERY SMALL lots with one overflow lot. On the weekend it gets busy and finding a spot can be a real struggle.

Overall this was probably the most "scary" hike I did while in Boulder (but not the most demanding) because it is less maintained than the Eldorado Canyon State Park and the Rocky Mountain trails that I did. But it is still pretty easy, just a bit slippery. Use hiking sticks and you should be fine. I think this is a must do when in Boulder.
