I also love that it has like that secured entrance. It has a little walkway where there's like one gate you secure it then you walk and then there's another gate. Definitely better for safety.

Located in the Wanskuck Historic District of Providence's North End, this 25-acre park includes a…read moretree-lined grass field, walking trails through a wooded area, and paths surrounded by a beautiful stone wall. During anytime a day you can see many people walking and enjoying the park and many bringing their dogs so they have a place to run and play. The loop path for walking is a little over a half of a mile long, starting at the entrance gates and continuing through a large grassy area with many large old trees. The path turns to the right through the wooded area for a bit. The path then continues back into the field and towards the entrance gate. The path is paved for the most part but the pavement is not in good condition so it's not the best part for strollers or wheelchair users. Wanskuck House sits on this property and is currently the home to Providence's artist-in-residence program. The land of Wanskuck Park was donated to the city of Providence in 1948 by the widow of Senator Jesse Metcalf. The land was part of their estate and informally became known as Metcalf Park. A 25-acre park, it includes an open grass field, walking trails through woods, and paths surrounded by a nice stone wall.

When I bike around that area I see many kids playing freely here, there are no fences, so it's an open space to come in and out....Some seniors are seen often chatting and relaxing on its benches as well....You can walk a few blocks and get something to snack on from the bakeries or restaurants nearby.

Potter in memory of her daughter Gladys. The two stone tablets set into the brick and stone columns that frame the entrance to the park, anchoring its wrought-iron gates, provide the basic facts: * "The Gladys Potter Garden/ December 4 1883/ November 16 1891" * "This garden was given by a mother in loving memory of her little girl who loved this spot and who used to walk here with her father when it was a part of an attractive ravine/ MCMXX" I have biked many times around this park and it gets busy with kids during the school year....teachers and child care workers keep an eye on the little ones as they enjoy the playground and the green spaces....the park is well fenced, so it's very secure. Mrs. Potter's gift to establish and maintain the park was substantial: about $15,000 ($250,000 in current dollars) for the land and landscaping costs, plus $10,000 ($160,000 today) provided in her will to endow a fund for the maintenance of the park. Mrs. Potter described this gift in her daughter's memory as the "fulfillment of a long cherished ambition," and expressed the hope that "this parcel of land shall be a place of beauty and satisfaction to the neighborhood and a place where persons interested in such things may stop and rest and enjoy the beauty of the flowers and the cultivated garden which will be established here." In her will, Mrs. Potter left more than $660 thousand (today over $8.4 million) to the Rhode Island Hospital to establish a building in memory of her daughter and husband. The Potter Building is still operating at Rhode Island Hospital; and in a lobby of the hospital's Davol Building is a bronze plaque that commemorates the original gift, and a large oil portrait of little Gladys Potter.

The Davis Park Community Garden provides garden plots to residents of the Smith Hill, Elmhurst, and…read moreValley neighborhoods in the city of Providence, RI. Every year in the Fall, the residents can request a plot for the upcoming planting season and they can grow their own herbs, vegetables or fruits. My husband and I stopped by since he is an avid gardener and he wanted to check out the plots to see if he would be interested in renting one for next year. Garden members can rent plots on a yearly basis. The garden plots vary in size, but most are 4' x 10' and 4' x 8'. Rental fees range from $10 to $50. Members are required to maintain their plots in accordance with common organic gardening practices (no chemical fertilizers or pesticides, no invasive species planted, etc). Work days are held monthly from April to October where members join together to help maintain and improve the garden. Meetings are held in the Fall, Winter and Spring. All gardeners are expected to contribute 4 hours per month to community service projects involving the garden.Garden members are encouraged to volunteer for various jobs and teams that help maintain and improve the garden Garden members help maintain a herb garden, strawberry plot, blueberry bushes, raspberry plants, grape vines, flower beds. Members are entitled to harvest these plants throughout the growing season. The garden maintains a compost bin and finished compost is available for all garden members. Garden funds are used to purchase compost in the Spring to supplement our own compost. The city forestry department provides wood chip mulch free of charge. Two yard hydrants provide water for the garden. The parks department performs major repairs. The garden also provides tools that all members can use to maintain their plot and other areas of the garden. Some of the tools are shovels, cultivators, lawnmowers, string trimmer, and hand tools.

Chapin was active in manufacturing both cotton and wool in the Rhode Island area. The park offers 1.7 acres of passive green space for the public to enjoy. It has been a place where we have strolled while visiting friends in the past and it's a nice urban space.
