They interviewed him on the phone too fill out his application and contacted his mental health doctor to get those medical records; and that is absolutely all they did. They gave no advice as to how to best complete the application. Not did they assist with all the subsequent paper work he was sent. He thought that the more dependent he appeared, the more likely he was to get benefits. As he had no income at the time, he did not indicate any expectation or requirement of helping with future living expenses. And Hatfield did not bother to explain that this would reduce his benefit by $314, so that he now has to help with household expenses out of his reduced benefit. And this likely will put him on the street in the future. He contacted them later and asked for help in getting the full amount, but received no response. When he was granted benefits,however, they were happy to take his $8000 back payments for giving no advice and no help other than what he could have done himself
