Kind of awkwardly positioned gas station on the corner of River Road and Little Falls Parkway. But gas is often a few cents cheaper than the Shell station right next door so if you're heading in the right direction it's worth it to pass the Shell station and pull into this one. read more

Kenwood Sunoco charges $70 to plug their reader into your car and get the check engine light code. Really? Seems pretty petty. Most repair shops do that for free as good customer relations and then work to get your repair job. read more

Dropped my car off for routine maintenance. The service quality and speed were good--they had my car done within two days, which was about what I expected for the work that needed to be done. We found the labor and parts rate charged to be good value. A charge in excess of $200 was added as a diagnostic fee, which seemed excessive compared to other quality service received in the area. read more

Here's the skinny: in my first (and only) experience with this business, the owner told a bald-faced lie to me about my car, and I actually caught him in it. I had a weird noise coming from the front of my car, and I thought it was the wheel bearing. When I took it in, James told me that it wasn't the wheel bearing, it was the heat shield, and said he could take it off and replace it. He warned me that I should get it fixed immediately, because without the heat shield protecting the gas tank, the gas tank might get punctured and explode into flames. Something about this just didn't seem quite believable, so I decided to get a second, third, fourth, and fifth opinion just to confirm what had become readily apparent: this guy was lying to me so that I would leave my car with him and let him do needless work. James wrote on the receipt - in bold caps - , "CUSTOMER SHOULD BE VERY CAREFUL DRIVING SINCE HEAT SHIELD IS MISSING FROM GAS TANK." My car is a Mazda, and I spoke with two Mazda dealership mechanics - one of which laughed when I told them James' advice, another whom was baffled. A BMW mechanic that I know said the man was totally lying to me. And the mechanic who recommended Kenwood Sunoco said, "This is one of those moments when you think you've heard it all, but then something like this happens. I'm so sorry for sending you to him. I will never recommend anyone else." All four of them agreed that a heat shield is a totally expendable part of a car that keeps your floorboard from getting warm - basically, that it's outrageous to tell a customer his car was more likely to explode into flames without one. Seriously folks, I got four other opinions before I was willing to say that I had been lied to. And I didn't do this review until I called James and tried to confront him. He tried to defend himself, which tells me he's either clueless about cars or he's deceptive. He seems like a bright guy to me, so I have to believe he's deceptive. I've probably been to this gas station over 50 times. It's never been a great experience but I would have usually given it 2 stars, 3 stars on its best day ever. After my visit tonight, I will never be going back and urge you not to either! First off, the other gas stations that are right next to it are 20cents cheaper per gallon. Luckily for Suncco, they happen to close at 11pm so when I rolled down the street with an empty tank at 11pm on the dot I had no other option. I pumped my over priced gas and asked the clerk for the bathroom key because I really had to go! The clerk rudely opened his little draw where the bathroom key usually is and it was empty. I told him the key was not there and he starred at me like he didn't know a word of English. Then I quickly realized he didn't. He looked around his booth for the key and was unable to find it. So his solution was that someone was using the bathroom. I was the only car at the gas station so this was obviously a lie. So I waited a good ten minutes for this mystery person to leave the bathroom and I was considering just peeing in the bushes at this point. I kindly went up to the clerk and once again told him there was obviously no one in the bathroom. He just looked at me and didn't even reply then he looked away and ignored me completely. So I asked him again if he could get the spare key and unlock it for me. He just flat out told me no and walked away. Service was awful, cigarettes and gas are very overpriced here and none of the clerks no English. Go here if it is a last resort. read more

I needed an alternator replacement for my Ford van. Would've done it myself, but it surprised me on the road and I had no choice but to take it in. Kenwood Sunoco has been good to me in the past and I like going there. This time though, they charged me $212.00 for labor. Now if you know anything about alternators on this van, it's disconnect the battery, loosen the tension on the belt and three bolts. The mechanic had it off in a heartbeat. The next thing was to wait for the part. That took a while. It came and the mechanic had the new one on in a heartbeat. That and hooking up the battery charger couldn't have taken more than thirty minutes. So basically, they charged me for the van sitting in the bay for three hours. Un-be-lievable! Never again. Update as of 9/23/2016 I don't have anything against Sunoco the company, so even though this particular station ripped me off, I still would stop and get gas there. I figured that's going to Sunoco. I won't give them any other business, but I can stomach buying gas there now and again. Now being the awesome people that they are there at Kenwood Sunoco, they offer patrons free air. So, I was filling a tire up when one of the whoevers decided to come out and personally confront me about my yelp review. I guess he did a little amateur detective work and deduced that it was me. He didn't like the fact that I was partaking of their oh so generous offer of free air. I told him that I still buy gas there. He said that he had never seen me do that. I guess that he's always there and monitors every vehicle that comes in and out? And I guess you have to take it up the rear to be worthy of their free air? I said fine, I'll go elsewhere from now on. As he was walking away, I told him that if he didn't like negative reviews, try not ripping off customers. Pretty simple logic, I thought. This is when he told me that I don't know how "it" works and that there's a "flat rate". I said that I don't care about that and told him the following: You charged me over $200 labor, and the mechanic didn't spend more than 45 minutes on my van. How do I know this? I was there outside the whole time. It's really simple, ladies and gentlemen: RIP OFF!!! I also didn't mention in my initial review that they charged me something like $240.00 for a remanufactured alternator. Reman alternator at Parts geek: $86.58. In closing, if whomever this person was at Kenwood Sunoco feels as though I am dead wrong in the way I feel and what I'm saying, he is perfectly welcome to come on here and respond to my review and explain to everyone how 45 minutes max of actual physical labor is worth over $200 bucks. More power to him. Defend your free air!!! Update as of 11/18/2016 Ladies and gentleman, as you can see Mr. Kenwood was gracious enough to respond and try to defend Kenwood Sunoco's labor pricing. This is what I was hoping for. You've got the story now from both sides and it's up to you to decide whether or not this station is worthy of your business. As you can see by his response, nothing that I wrote was either embellished or false. So was I or wasn't I ripped off? You know how I feel. Now it's up to you to decide. read more

Wow! I wish I had read the reviews first. Be careful if using this service station. James is a sleazeball. They will skin you alive, if possible. I went in for a Maryland State inspection. Unfortunately, due to family crisis, I went at the last minute so I didn't have time to shop around. I just moved to the area and this place was close. A mere $3000 later, a painful lesson has been learned. They will rape you and smile as they do it. DO NOT USE THIS SHOP. Do yourself a favor and find a good mechanic. read more

Note from a very tough customer: Have you ever checked out the Sunoco on River Road (next to Whole Foods and across from McDonalds)? Well, I am there right now to get the MD state inspection required for vehicle registration. It's like stepping back in time to a distant decade when surfaces were clean, appointment hours convenient, service friendly and highly competent, deliverables exceed expectations, and everything worthwhile was family owned for generations--three generations, to be exact. Regardless of what you need done to the car, treat yourself and visit this Shangri-La of Service Stations first. Ask for James Spicer...the third, junior or the original. Love 'em! read more

I've been going here for years while I drive through Potomac and lived in a nearby small town. Mechanics know their stuff, are fast, and are reasonably priced for the wealthy area. Alot cheaper than the shops in the small town I lived in. They're open a lot later than the other places nearby which is always a plus while driving to Dulles Airport at night! Would definitely recommend to anybody and have them form their own opinion, which I'm sure would be positive. read more

I went in for a $300 repair and not only did they not fix the repair properly, they found $2,600 more of repairs that I allegedly needed. When I had to return because the car wasn't properly fixed, they claimed the problem was something else to get more money and not honor the warranty. But I knew how to read codes and knew exactly what the problem was. I'd be very wary of ever patronizing this station. Not only do they find repairs that you don't need, but what you do need, they don't fix properly so when you return, they can claim many more repairs. The reviews with 5 stars must be "plants." They are impossible to believe. This is one of the most dishonest station and worst experiences I've ever had at an auto repair place. read more

My car failed Maryland inspection at this station for legitimate reasons and needed some work done. Sunoco's quote was ~$2500. I drove across the street and got the same work done for $1950. Still can't believe how high their prices were compared to a nearby competitor. read more

I received excellent customer service and attention to detail at Kenwood Sunoco. I live close by and one day my car was acting up. Turns out it was completely undriveable. I took it to Kenwood Sunoco and they took care of it immediately. They kept in constant communication and even recommended a place for me to get body work done on my car.
