I bounced around at different salons in the Coastal VA area until I came to Kellen's. I will never go anywhere else! I will be in mourning if they ever close. Kellen and Taylor have both worked their magic on my hair for the past year and a half. They're both SO insanely talented and nail it every single time I'm in the chair. I usually do not share negative reviews but I feel that there needs to be some accountability held. I will be honest about all positives and negatives. I recently went to Kellen's salon for a color correction. I have only been a bleach and tone for the past 6 years but I took a break for a year. I made an appointment for a color correction to platinum blonde. I paid $475 + tip at my appointment for a color correction and hair cut (this was discounted from $525. I think because of the result of my hair.) They did also give me a free bottle of purple shampoo. This was nice but not necessary to make me feel better about the results. My appointment in total took 7hrs (It has never taken more than 5 hrs for a color correction and I have fairly short hair and an undercut). During my appointment 3 other clients were taken and I felt like I was left for very long periods of time without checking on my hair. I feel like for the price I would expect a little more attention to watching my processing. When my hair was done it was a very bright very yellow color with obvious bands. The top and underneath were two different colors. My hair was extremely fried and there was a ton of breakage. This has never happened once when bleaching my hair. I also asked for a bob haircut that turned out extremely uneven. The next day I messaged for a correction to my toner and they did promptly schedule me and did not charge me for the correction. I have to say I still was not satisfied with the outcome of the correction and it was still extremely uneven in color with a prominent band. The stylist doing my hair seemed to not know how to properly correct it. Another hairstylist (first day at the salon) advised them on most of the correction. She also was not able to fix my bob haircut and the new stylist had to take over to correct it (I would like to emphasize that the new hairstylist did a fantastic job on my haircut!) Lastly, for the service I received I think my appointment was extremely overpriced. Most of the reasoning for the price was due to the high rent in the building and the cost of the product. While I understand that, I think the price should reflect the skill and ability of the stylist. Rent and product should be considered in the price but not the bulk of what I was paying for. This salon is the only salon I'll ever let touch my hair again. These girls know what they're doing - and if you're blonde or wanting to be blonde they will get you RIGHT. Personally with other salons they have always made my hair either patchy or stripey instead of a perfect blend. I don't know much about hair but I tried my hardest to explain how I wanted it and somehow she knew how to translate it into my color PERFECTLY. I had a last second appointment that she managed to squeeze me in and had like 3 stylist helping the whole time since I have ALOT of long hair. And I loved it - if she didn't do that I wouldn't have the fast appointment that I needed. They were all so knowledgeable and helpful and overall it was so nice to see everyone working so hard and well together. Some people don't like when there's more than one stylist working on you, but I see no problem if the stylist is directing them to do everything exactly as they would do and oversee it all. You can tell it's a great team that communicates well for the same end goal. They are all truly the best of the best. This review is one star because of Customer Service. Because of COVID-19, it is hard to get your hair done anywhere. With that said, I had an appointment with Tia and she did an amazing job. I booked an appointment for about eight weeks out and was looking forward to my appointment. Because life happens, my appointment needed to be rescheduled. On a date it was rescheduled complications in my life occurred. That's why I had to reschedule my appointment. It took then two days to respond back to me. I responded back on the next day because I didn't see the text message from the day before. I received no response. Then 12 days later, I reached out for an appointment. I receive a response the next day for another stylist. Much to my dismay, Tia was not available. And I got the feeling that Kellen's Salon did not want my business and treated me unprofessionally. I understand that these times are rough, however the staff does not know how to handle customer interactions when rescheduling appointments. Overall, my business wasn't worth keeping and didn't didn't even bother to retain me as a client. I am not happy about this because I really did like what Tia did with my hair. Now I am on the hunt for another hairstylist. I paid about $400 for a balayage and gray cover-up. I even tipped her $50. That's more than I'm willing to pay to get my hair done anywhere. I was willing to pay that again because the talent is there. The way I was treated as a client, makes me feel like I should never go back there because I am not being treated like they want me as a client. read more

I waited to review this salon because I wanted to really be sure how I felt about my experience here. I have been asked by several local friends if I recommend this place and each time I advised to avoid it because you will pay incredibly high price for very mediocre and unsatisfactory results. I observed that Kellen definitely caters to a very specific customers within age group of teen to 20's and weight group of skinny on skinnier side. Girls in their 20's make great Instagram models, but women over 30 have the money to spend for upkeep in high-end beauty salons. Kellen's Instagram page is filled with blondes with long extensions looking very on trend. It is a great advertisement for her business no doubt. I contacted her via Instagram asking for an appointment. We exchanged few messages and my appointment was scheduled few weeks out around 10am on a weekday. I arrived to an empty salon where after waiting a while someone greeted me with questioning look on her face. I had no idea if that was Kellen or her assistant or receptionist. After I stated that I'm here for my first appointment with Kellen, the girl went back to the back of the place and I heard whole bunch of whispering. I should have left right then. But I did not... After another 5-10 min of agonizing weight, Kellen came out to ask about my appointment. I actually pulled out our chat to show her that indeed we were confirmed via texts. I did reach out to her few days before since I did not get a confirmation call/text. She agreed to do my hair even though she clearly wasn't expecting me. I paid fortune for "work in progress" results. She charged me for color correction which is total bs. Every time you get customer with prior colored hair you can just say that it's a "color correction". I didn't come with ruined or bad hair color. I had color from at least 6 weeks prior that was basically what she end up doing. It was within the same family of blondes. I did not have box color hair. I did not require hair color removal. I end up with a huge bill and results exactly as the last salon's. She assured me that my next visit will be less than $100 for upkeep. I showed up for my next visit with Kellen 4 weeks later to find her assistant do all the work. She "supervised", but frankly her assistant was a lot more personable and pleasant to talk to than the owner. I was charged $195 for my visit. And I was left disappointed with the results. My hair still was not where we discussed during my first visit it should have been at this point. One would ask WHY ohhh why did I comeback for my second visit, why did I stay for first time when I clearly could tell she did not have me in her schedule. I gave her a chance because she is young and starting new venture. I'm all about empowering young women! Support local business! However I will not stand for being taken advantage off and lied to and overcharged just because I have the means to pay. The false claims and promises and false estimates of service charge are not a way to do business. If I make appointment with the owner, the owner better do the work on my hair. If assistant is doing the work, I better pay assistant rates. Can I recommend Kellen's Salon to people I know? Based on my personal visits and experience combined with the money I spent there-NO. I love Kellen and Kellen's Salon! I have been going to Kellen and her team for years. The salon is welcoming, clean, and adorable. I love the confidence I feel after getting my hair done. It's amazing what some color, a cut, and getting styled can do for boosting mental health. Kellen and her team share product recommendations and styling tips which have really helped me embrace my natural texture and helped keep my hair healthy. I also appreciate that her and her team are concerned with making the experience as comfortable as possible. For example I get migraines and have a very sensitive scalp and they are soooo gentle. I can get easily overwhelmed with the sound of the blow dryer so I wear my earplugs and we take breaks when I need to. They are so sweet and considerate! read more

I highly recommend this salon. It's like walking into a little oasis (no strip mall salon)! Kellen has created a modern/romantic vibe and everything is brand spanking new but has a comfy feel. I'm super picky about lighting and all of the natural light is wonderful. All of the staff is annoying good looking ;-) and super friendly....they did a wonderful job with my blonde color and cut! Booked with the owner and she only did the color on half my head having her assistant do the other half as well as the toning, root shade, and wash/blow dry. I did not book to have someone else do my hair. Prices were incredibly high for someone who is still learning to be doing my hair. I've been here a handful of times over the past year and have had relatively good experiences, but the customer service appears to be non-existent lately. I've been trying to reach my usual stylist for a few weeks now without a response. When I contacted the owner I was told that she forgot to send a response and would get back to me ASAP. I'm not sure how you forget to respond to two attempts to contact. After I contacted the owner I still didn't hear from the stylist. Maybe it's due to the lack of a receptionist, and the stylists preferring text over phone calls...but it's the most unprofessional aspect of this salon. I will not be going back. I would give higher stars based on previous experiences with the salon, but if I can't even make an appointment after three attempts to contact the stylist then I can't justify a higher rating. read more

I can't recommend Kellen and her team enough. I've had some really rough experiences at other salons, and Kellen's Salon has given me hope in my hair stylist again! First off, Kellen and her husband are just the sweetest people you could ever meet. They are so kind and they make you feel like so much more than a customer. IN LOVE, I wish I could give higher than 5 stars! I recommend this salon to EVERYONE! It's always scary having to find a new hair stylist, especially for someone that has had bad hair experiences in the past, but from the moment I booked my first appt with Kellen I felt comfortable and confident in my decision. Before we even began my first session, she took time to consult with me and really listen to what I wanted! I felt at ease immediately, she's so sweet and so genuine--She told me what she recommended and WHY she recommended it which really made me feel so confident that I was going to get the results I've been hoping for! And then she exceeded even my expectations for what I wanted, my hair never look so good or felt so healthy!!! Since coming to Kellen's Salon, I get so many compliments on my hair, literally daily, which always makes me so excited for my next appt! Great Hair Salon in Chesapeake! Everyone is very friendly and the place has a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. I'm a guy so I only got a haircut and shampoo but they still make you feel appreciated. Prices are very reasonable as far as I was concerned and you can tell all the ladies have a lot of experience.
