So I booked an appointment online day of at 11am (when they open). It looks really nice in there and they have a cool vibe going on. I got greeted quickly and immediately taken to the chair. But the whole service seemed super rushed just not super impressed for the price point. read more

I have never been disappointed w the customer service or the quality of work I am given at AOC. The staff is caring, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable. They take time w you, listen to what you want, and give advice when they feel you may need to go in a slightly different direction. They make productive product suggestions, and never push into any service or product you don't want or need. On my most recent visit, I worked w Kathleen on getting my summer highlights and a little bit of color correction. She took her time, listened to advice from fellow stylists, and the collaboration turned out beautifully! Been coming here since moving to Virginia 6 years ago. I will only trust a certain special person with my hair, and that special person is Alicia Bevins! Each time I come back, I leave happier than the last and I'm not sure how that's possible when I feel like my hair looks 11/10 after every appointment. If you're looking for low maintenance, natural looking balayage, she's your girl! I always get so many compliments on my hair. Let's not forget her cuts either... she never takes more than I want off and that's so important to me on this long hair journey of mine. I've been to salons where I leave and cry in the car about how much hair was taken off, but at AOC I immediately go to my car and take selfies Lastly, the Davines line of products has given me the healthiest hair of my lifetime. When I got there, they told me they did not have time to do those color and cut which I made an appointment for in advance. Long story short they covered my gray it turned red I'm a brunette, I like full bangs but they thinned my bangs out so much. This review took me 1 month to write because I was shy and embarrassed and didn't know if I should. But every single day when I do my hair and look at it, I hate it more everyday. I went in for an appointment as a new client 1 month ago. I had booked my appt 2 weeks in advanced, over the phone I was told I was going to get a "senior" stylist. (Fancy words they use to make you feel you will be getting the best of the best) I mentioned to the stylist that I hated my root color. (My balayage, was outgrown, ) but I did mention I wanted to go lighter and do a balayage again, just a little lighter. Which I've done in the past at other salons, so I was not worried. Long story short, when The stylist was done, I was shocked. Not in a good way. She was so happy with her work, and I know she was in a rush because she had another client. I didn't tell her I hated it. I said I liked it, thanked her, paid (tipped her well even for the job I received) and left. As soon as I walked out I was crying. (I Cry a little everyday) By far the worse coloring job I've EVER had. Coming from California (like other reviews) I never had a problem finding good colorist until I moved here. But thinking it was hilltop and knowing I was about to spend a few hundred. (Total was about close to $300) I was expecting it to be the place I would always come back to as a loyal customer. Sadly that won't be the case. My hair looked better when I went in for my appointment than when I came out. **UPDATE** Brian (the owner) called me to apologize for my experience (not necessary and very much appreciated) and assured me this was a fluke and very rare result from the stylist. She had been with them for 14(?) years and has had very little complaint in her time with them. As stated in review, she was chatty and an overall very pleasant person. He also offered (& did) a refund so I can apply that towards fixing it here. I absolutely appreciated him reaching out and that was top notch. I told him perhaps that was a lesson for me to pay more attention to language and my words in the future. Perhaps instead of telling the stylist what I did NOT want, to instead communicate more of what was wanted (?). Again, I appreciate that he took the time to contact me directly and attempt to remedy the situation and changed it to 3 stars instead of the 1. read more

I ended up here by chance when a different salon canceled my appointment with little notice during the New Year's Eve rush. I was SO LUCKY!!! Everything about AOC was great. The front desk folks were awesome at getting me in to get a service. I'm still not exactly sure what I got, I'd asked for partial highlights, but I think they went all the way because my head looked like I was wearing a foil helmet by the end? It doesn't matter though because I'm thrilled with the results. Alicia was my stylist and she was GREAT! I've received a ton of comments on the new color as what she did definitely compliments my complexions so much better than what I had. The salon was also awesome. Very modern, very clean, and great product. I'd never had vegan product for color before and oh.my.gosh. my hair feels so healthy! Parking was free and abundent. Price-wise it seemed high for VA Beach, but lower than the DC prices I'm used to paying, so I'm happy. The color plus cut and blow dry was $253 (plus tip). read more

The last time I was here was in January, I think. I was a bit hesitant to post such a review, 'cause I don't necessarily like to be mean. The haircuts here are so horribly mediocre and overpriced, though. Not sure where the fantastic score comes from. My last cut (and first at THIS location) was just straight-up BAD. The girl was really nice, but clearly needs to go back to school. I asked for the most vanilla haircut of all time - long layers, with straight across bangs. She literally squatted lazily over my legs and snipped my bangs. That was it. Didn't comb through them, check how they looked. I was there for what felt like an extremely short visit. I didn't realize until I got home (I am usually very chill about my haircuts - I foolishly assume they know what they are doing) that I didn't even have layers (plural, that is). Wut? The next morning when I styled my hair for work, I realized my bangs were super uneven - there were a couple random long hairs dead center. I was charged an insanely high rate considering the outcome. I think it was $55, and I always tip well. Back home I always paid around $40 for an awesome haircut, so I don't know why they charge so much. Tried both locations, hoping for success. Just ended up a lot poorer and with blah hair that I had to fix myself at home. This place is no bueno. read more

This update is meant to be constructive for AOC. I've been to the salon twice - both times with Becca and both times she did a great job. I tip very well and wrote this great review. We decided last time I wanted to grow my hair out a little and made an appt. for a cut for yesterday at 4. I got there promptly at 4. Becca had a client in her chair - with very long hair soaking wet. Becca was starting the blow dry from the back, with the rest of her wet hair clipped on top (in other words, she was going to get quite the blow out). 15 minutes of me sitting in the waiting area unacknowledged I stood up to see how it was going with the client before me. From what I could tell, it was going very slowly. They were chatting (which is great - Becca has a great personality and we chatted a lot too!) and she was slowly picking up the sections of hair to wrap around a round brush. In the 15 minutes she didn't appear to have made much "headway" in the blow out. I had a very important conference call at 5:30 and was planning on having a great hair cut for it. But given it appeared I wasn't going to even get to the chair for another 15-20 minutes I said to the front desk "I'm afraid I can't wait - I have a conference call at 5:30 and at this rate I won't make it." The front desk person said "i can ask her how long she's going to be" (bear in mind Becca's chair is right behind the front desk and she looked up at me standing there). I said "that's ok I'll just reschedule" so the front desk girl says "the first she has available here is March 17" with a tone as tho discouraging me from booking it. I asked "are you able to check the Norfolk location?" which seemed to annoy her a bit then she said "yes - soonest March 10" so I said ok little difference so I'll take the 17th. She booked it and I left. So today I'm going to cancel it and I've decided to just make the drives to NOVA to see my old stylist. In all my years, I totally get prior clients can create a domino of delay. Every salon I've ever been to apologizes, acknowledges at check in stylist is running late, etc. etc. I am a client who shows up on time, brings pics of what I want, I tip well and I have never felt more disrespected by any salon than AOC yesterday. Please invest in service training. I'm so disappointed after searching here in VAB for a good stylist - and finding one in Becca who apparently doesn't value me in return. read more

It's honestly heartbreaking to have to write this review, after 12ish years of being well taken care of, by AOC/Brian/Dalbe and their stylists. However, today was the third and final strike. I understand you want to teach and nurture, but if a stylist is not good at something, it needs to be acknowledged and fixed. I came in today, to have my roots and blonde refreshed, because I was supposed to have a photoshoot in 3 days, for my company so I could be featured professionally. Now, I will not be featured or photographed. Strike 1- turning my gorgeous blonde hair chunky and yellow, by Roberto. But we know he's no longer a concern, from a few years ago and is now gone. Strike 2- (Pictures of the extensions will be provided) Dervelle ordering hand sewn extensions and placing machine weft extensions instead, without consulting with me first. Then, proceeding to place said extensions in high tension spots, not color matching the roots, and using something akin to yarn to sew it into my hair. Folded over wefts, as well as CUT wefts also all without my consent. The last straw with the extensions was being rushed each time (and obvious annoyance that he had to do them) and I was in pain having my head jerked around by someone who didn't want to be sewing wefts that day. I gave up, and went elsewhere to have them removed, which is how I got the shocking pictures of what was really sewn to my hair, and what wefts I actually received. I then had to spend another $1,000+ to get the extensions I actually wanted. Strike 3- Megan doing a simple/my usual full foil today. Keep the dimension, no chunky striped highlights please, and level up so it's a little icier. The usual blonde request and definitely my usual request considering how long I've been going there. Instead what I received was yellow underneath, warmth in random spots, white/purple the rest of the hair, and a white/yellow stripe down the dead center of the top of my head that looks like a skunk chunk stripe when I wear my hair up. I spoke up multiple times about my concerns, all of which were met with attitude, and basically to just sit there, so I finally did. I then had the pleasure of listening to Megan and the tall blonde girl at the front desk speak poorly about another client, and laughing about her, thinking I could not hear them because my airpods were in. Then, when I was about to be washed, yes, I absolutely took pictures and was so anxious and upset my mouth is literally dropped open. Because of this, another friend of hers came over to the washing bowl when it was time to wash my hair, and they both literally complained point blank right there in front of me to each other as if I didn't exist, about the fact that I took pictures of *my* hair, *myself* after *her* work, rolled their eyes, and smirked. I attempted to give feedback at the end, yet again, because now at this point, I have finished hair with exactly what I was trying to tell her all along to please be careful *not* to do. The apology I received was, "I'm sorry you didn't want it so bright, I'm sorry it's too bright for you." Not at all my complaint. My complaint was that I had a white/yellow chunk down the center of my head, the purple, the yellow other spots, the disconnect, the solid color, and lack of dimension. This sort of apology made me feel diminished and embarrassed. I resigned and said I would think about it and see how it all "washes out the next few days" because I really hate confrontation. My tips to these stylists would be, please listen to your clients. Please do not rush. Please ask for help if you're unsure of what you're doing. Please don't take on assignments that you know you don't know enough about, to execute. Lastly, please be KIND. This is the first time, as a customer, I have felt so uncomfortable being talked about right in front of my face, and hearing the nasty comments about another customer. This has NEVER been a salon where this was the social climate, and Dalbe and Brian are *not* those kinds of people. Unfortunately, Megan proved to be, very quickly. I've never had a bad interaction with either. They're very present owners, and likely don't know these things were going on. Clients should be listened to, and if something seems disconnected, *PLEASE* stop and make sure you understand what they want. I know it's an inconvenience for you as a stylist to have to fix something, but it's such a terrifying, anxiety filled, embarrassing, awful spot to have to look at someone and say it isn't what you wanted after trying throughout the entire appointment to tell them, THEN proceed to still tip 20% on a $200+ service when you didn't get the product you paid for. Tips are for time spent and service provided. I feel like I literally tipped to have discolored hair and have someone talk poorly about me, that's just sad. Dervelle did a great job with my hair as always. He was amazing and put my hair half up and left half of it down, but I could never make it look this good. He took very good care of me from shampooing and conditioning to detangling and blowdrying it out. He also took into account that it was raining today so we didn't put in curls this time. I look fabulous! I've been coming to Dervelle for a while now and never have a mishap. He's taken very good care of my hair and has helped it grow and stay healthy. He also does great color in my hair when I want it and I'm never not happy with my hair. I always recommend him to friends and I have no intention on going to anybody else. He's also super nice and gives great recommendations on what to use when you're at home so that you can keep up with your hair. That doesn't keep me from coming back though! Keep it up! read more

I was in town for a family reunion. My hair really needed a good cut and color. Our daughter-in-law goes to Brenda for her beautiful styling and cut. I asked her if there was any chance that she could make an appointment for me. She called Brenda who, fit me in for both the color and cut and then worked her magic. The cut is fantastic, the color is beautiful and style is just what I was hoping for. Brenda had listened carefully to everything I was saying and then did it! But there's more! I was treated as though I was having a spa day.... attented to with respect, kindness and skill and to top it all off a gentle, soft and incredible massage on my head at the end of the color process. I have been going there for years but within the last year even prior to covid I noticed a lot of over turn at the desk and stylist. Post covid it is worse and going downhill quickly. First you were charged a covid fee. Ok I get that. But now there is a separate charge to dry your hair after a cut? Their prices have gone up and quality of salon is going down. Genuinely obsessed with this salon. I change my hair up a lot and have been wary of new places so much so that I used to just wait until I took trips back to my hometown. NOT ANYMORE. I have been to AOC a few times and always had a great experience. For one of my appointments I was lucky enough to get scheduled with Kimmy and she is so extremely talented and very intuitive. I say that because I come in with a general idea of what I am looking for and it's like she's in my head bc I always end up looking amazing. I'm a dirty blonde and feel like I have a tough time getting the right color but Kimmy has done an amazing job whether I want to go lighter or darker. I just took the plunge and cut bangs and am legit so happy with the end result. There's really nothing she cannot do. This place is amazing, really cannot say enough about it!! read more

I came in for a cut with long layers and long curtain bangs to frame my face....I wanted to keep the length as much as possible. Once she finished styling it I had to remind her about wanting long curtain bangs & she basically just chopped off the front pieces of my hair and didn't blend them in at all. Went back to a different person and had a much better outcome! I see the guy there that did a bad job, but he doesn't seem to remember me. I moved down here about a year ago and was looking for a new place to get my hair done. I was a little nervous because for the last 24 years I've had the same hair stylist. I went in here and received such a warm welcome. Let's just say I want to give a big shout out to Andrea for literally saving my hair! My old hair stylist from back home had too much blonde in my hair after I had repeatedly told her that I wanted to my hair to look a little warmer instead of bright blonde. I wanted to start making a transition back to my original hair color which I still had in my hair. Andrea listened and did EXACTLY what I had asked of her. She added low lights and put toner in my hair. My hair looks amazing and I receive compliments non-stop. My hair looks exactly how I've wanted it to look for years now. Also, my hair has never been so soft. Andrea is an amazing stylist and I would recommend her to anyone. Every time I come to see her see remembers stuff that we talked about from our last session and that's usually every 3 months. I have been getting my hair done in Southern California my entire life. This past summer I moved to Virginia Beach and started looking for a new hair stylist. After careful research and inquiries I decided on AOC Salon. July 31st, 2019 was my first appointment at AOC Salon to have my roots lightened up before a quick visit back home to California. I was excited and eager to visit the salon and have my hair looking refreshed, lightened, and ready for my trip. Jamie was the stylist I saw. After completing the color treatment, rinsing, and prepping to dry my hair, Jamie burnt off chunks of my hair on the very top of my head. She had handfuls of my hair coming out into her hands and had to wipe them all in to a towel. Jamie could not even finish drying my hair because of fear of further damage...as if it could not get any worse. During my drive home I saw more and more of my wet scraggly sad hair shedding off. All I could wonder is when will this nightmare end, how long will it take for my hair to grow back, and what on earth am I going to do about this ridiculous cow lick/buzz cut on the top of my head now. Never go here....there are better places very close by. Coming from Orange County I can say I know quality salons when I see them. This salon is a disgrace to hair, art, and beauty. It is clean and organized due to Covid, they offer mask and sanitizer at the entrance for everyone to be protected.
