When we decided to renovate our home on Capitol Hill to include a finished basement, a second full bath, installation of central air (which the house did not have), replacing all windows in the back of the house, and renovation of the original upstairs bath, we solicited bids from several contractors. We found Keil Construction to be the only one that included everything on our request for bids and his estimate was the most competitive. Throughout the project, several unforeseen complications arose, given the age of the house. In every case, Jeff Keil came up with a solution to deal with the problem and ensured the house was brought up to code, while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the house's original design. In the end, we had a finished basement with a family room, bedroom, new bath, laundry space, and an upstairs with central air, refinished floors, new windows and exterior doors, and new siding in the back, making the house much more functional and comfortable. For our backyard, which was in terrible condition, Keil installed a brick patio, new fencing, and poured concrete for off-street parking. This has greatly enhanced the usefulness and value of our house. All in all, we were very pleased with Keil Construction. Jeff's teams' work was high quality throughout the process. We hired Keil Construction in January 2018 to do full-house renovation of our Cap Hill home. One year later we fired Keil, and 16 months later, we are still repairing structural damage and shoddy workmanship that needed to be redone. Little more than a Ponzi scheme. Stay clear. read more

When we decided to renovate our town home on Capitol Hill we reached out to a number of contractors and ended up selecting Keil Construction. We were very happy with the work and would use Keil Construction for any future minor or major renovation. Jeff's bid was in the middle of the pack, but we were struck by how he approach the project, with a strong desire to maintaining the historical character of the home. Jeff told us he would do the work to a high standard and he delivered. I was a little skeptical on how the powder room would turn out and in the end it is better than I would have ever envisioned. Our renovation was quite extensive. We installed all new floors, upgraded the electrical system and replaced the kitchen and relocated the powder room. The project also required opening up the home and removing a number of walls. In spite of our effort to consider all the possibilities many instances arose that we did not envision. In almost every instance Jeff and his workers were open to altering the work to meet our expectation and in many instances we were pleasantly surprised with the approach they took and the quality of the work. You cannot imagine how many things you would not think of when you decide to do a project of this scale. During the course of the renovation our central air conditioning died and We got bids from a number of firms that specialized in repairing and replacing AC units, never thinking that Jeff and his firm could do the work. Once Jeff learned of the problem he came up with a solution that was more effective and far cheaper then what we were getting from the AC contractors. During the renovation we also learned we had to replace the roof. You learn quickly in an old house as you take down walls and open up crevices a lot of problems emerged. When the roof problem cropped up we did not even consider using any firm other then Jeff's and we were very happy with the work performed. read more

Very disappointed. After making an appointment for a consultation, no one bothered to show up at my house. No one would have even contacted me about it if I hadn't reached out to them to find out why my appointment was missed. I was informed that there was an "emergency" and that they were sorry for missing the appointment. And then informed that they should never have made the appointment in the first place because, "It is difficult for us generally to get our guys to places outside of Capitol Hill efficiently so we tend not to take on projects outside of Capitol Hill." Would have been nice to know that they don't do jobs off the Hill before I took the day off from work to meet these guys. read more

We have used Keil Construction for two major renovations and a handful of smaller projects over the past ten years. We have been thrilled with the outcome. In fact, Jeff Keil has increased dramatically the value of our Capitol Hill home. We've recommended him to friends over the years, and they have all had a positive experience. Our first renovation entailed gutting our first floor to expand the kitchen, moving the half bath, and adding a mudroom and an entrance from the garage. The results were stunning, and the cost was very reasonable. Jeff was very involved throughout the process, and his recommendations and attention to detail made a huge difference. It's also worth noting that working with his team was a pleasure. The second renovation was even more significant. This time around we gutted the second floor (moved two bathrooms), which allowed us to add a staircase to the previously dingy, dark attic. Each of the new bathrooms was gorgeous, and the reconfiguration of the three bedrooms on the second floor made much more sense than the previous layout. Jeff Keil figured out a plan that gave us much more closet space, to include a walk in closet. Finally, he turned our attic into a third floor with a family room, bedroom, and full bath. We loved the placement of the windows and the dormers with cozy window seats. I recommend Keil Construction with zero reservations! read more

We recently completed a home renovation with Keil Construction for our Capitol Hill row home. The renovation included a new first floor, including kitchen and half bath, all new systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC), a new main bathroom and new flooring throughout the house. As others have stated, we selected Jeff and Keil Construction because of their approach and creativity with the work. Their prices are competitive and their finished work excellent, but what gave them the edge for us is Jeff and his ideas. With his experience and design skill, we were able to create more useful and beautiful spaces than we had originally envisioned. read more

This review really should be 4.5 stars. I used Keil Construction for renovation of a historic home on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. This was actually a larger job that was really a whole house renovation and I couldn't be happier with the results. Some basics: I have a background in the plumbing and mechanical field and I'm no slouch with a tool belt either. While I handled a lot of the grunt work, plumbing and the mechanical's, I used Jeff Keil and his men to help handle the rest. On my project their scope included getting the initial architectural drawings, helping me with the permitting (navigating DCRA can be a stressor unto itself), adding a rear addition and implementing the vision that my wife and I had for the home. Working with any contractor can be a challenge. There are personalities (and opinions) on both sides that come into play and while we had our differences at times, I can honestly say that working with Keil Construction was very beneficial. Jeff Keil just has a good eye for details. He personally worked with us to help us make a lot of key decisions while at the same time, helping us retain a lot of the historic charm that the home already had. His service was 'soup to nuts' and included some very significant aspects such as adding a linen closet here and laying our a master bath there. He also paid a lot of attention and helped incorporate details that really help make the home special. These included working on an extensive lighting plan for the home, addition of cable TV connections in the walls, speakers in the ceilings, finish selections etc. His carpenters and tile men are excellent as well and I wouldn't hesitate to use him again. We hired Keil Construction for a two-story, full renovation of our 1890s rowhouse in the Capitol Hill neighborhood and couldn't be more pleased with the result. Jeff Keil is excellent at preserving the look of the old while making a house new again. In particular, we were thrilled with his commitment to restoring the original pine floors hidden underneath another layer of wood. He painstakingly took up every board, laid a new sub-floor, and put back down the pine boards so they fit beautifully. They glow! We were also very pleased with custom paint and trim work, which involved new cove molding and re-use of the some of the old. The lead painter, Fransciso, was very accommodating, and often painted sample walls so I could see what a color would look like before I committed to it. His tile man was also wonderful, executing an old-fashioned basket-weave pattern for the master bath floor and constructing a gorgeous Calacatta marble shower. Jeff Keil is also great at creative re-use of material, and excellent at on the spot problem-solving during construction. He brought over a beautiful old mirror which he recessed into the front hall, and worked with us to build a custom kitchen island wrapped in old porch ceiling boards and a custom kitchen banquette area with a built-in TV stand and a lovely natural wood counter. When we had to re-locate the A/C return, and wound up with some space to fill, his carpenter, Carlos, built a beautiful linen closet in the upstairs hall. Jeff was also very helpful in executing my vision for a luxury master bath vanity made from a dresser found at Eastern Market. It was re-painted and fitted into the wall with a beautiful marble countertop. I will say that if you hire Keil Construction, you should be comfortable with changes to your initial plans. It was our experience that Jeff views plans as a jumping-off point for the work which was a good thing most of the time, resulting in unique solutions that we were happy with. It also meant that communication was essential. Email, which I'm used to using, was a mixed bag. In the end, I texted him more often than not (sometimes to remind him to read an email!) and relied on our weekly in-person meetings to talk about the progress of the renovation. Occasionally, we had to ask for clarification on change orders, or more detail about billing, but in all, Jeff was very generous with his time and resources, even providing unique ceiling lights out of his personal collection. Jeff delivered the house as promised by the requested move-in deadline (although work continued after we moved in.) His core crew was respectful, polite and helpful. For most of the renovation, we didn't live in the house, but after we moved in, the workers used a lockbox and cleaned up after themselves each day. My only complaint was that, on occasion, I didn't know they were coming to work, and was surprised to see them. I was also not thrilled with the slow manner and haphazard finish work of the sub-contractor who handled the electric work (I shared this with Jeff, and he worked to resolve the issue by using his own crew as needed.) But on the whole, I was happy to have Jeff's workers in the house, and they worked diligently and professionally, helping with everything from assembling a chandelier to building closet shelves. If you are unsure about whom to hire, I recommend viewing several houses that Jeff has renovated and seeing the quality of the work. If his "old made new" style is a good match for your vision (as it was for us!) I think you will be very pleased with Keil Construction. read more

Keil Construction renovated our basement and did quality work. Jeff, the owner, is a straight shooter who has a good eye and attention to detail. I received several quotes and while his wasn't the lowest, he was at the lower end of the pack. What set him apart is that he had been working on the Hill for many years, he came recommended by several neighbors, and everyone was very happy with his work. Before the job, he walked us through a variety of options and suggested a number of features that we ended up enjoying, including a recessed cabinet above the toilet in the bathroom, an overhead shower to maximize the space given the low basement ceilings, and mini split systems for the HVAC and heat compared with more conventional systems, just to name a few. He created a playroom, a laundry area, converted a half bath to full bath, and converted an attached garage to a guest bedroom. My main complaint was that there was often miscommunication between Jeff and his crew after our biweekly or weekly meetings. This led to required rework on many occasions. While Jeff agreed to pay for much of this rework, there were some cost overruns. Also, while the project took longer than expected and occasionally weeks would go by with no progress, he was able to pick up the pace at the end of the project to have the space ready for planned visitors. Overall, I was very pleased with the craftsmanship and would consider him for additional jobs in the future, but please note that as the customer you need to play an active role in the project along the way, including inspections of the work and periodic check-ins with Jeff. read more

2 stars because Keil Co. does beautiful work and takes pride in their craftsmanship. Their business practices are another story. In our case, Keil Co. was the lowest bidder on our project - a full basement excavation and first floor remodel of our DC row house - a very large residential project. After we had signed their contract, and after both both parties had signed a contract with the bank, Keil Co. came to us asking for completely different payment terms than were defined in either contract. In each contract, terms stated Keil Co. would be paid as each phase of work was completed. They then changed terms and asked us to pay the entire payment up front - this had never once been discussed prior to contract signatures or before we closed on the loan. Keil Co. then told us if we couldn't pay up front, they would add a 10% "overhead" to the project. Again, none of this was in the contract and put us in a horrible position, having already closed on the loan. When we told them no, they held onto our deposit until we signed a "mutual" termination agreement. We likely had a legal case to enforce the terms of the contract, which is why they held the deposit, but we felt legal action before the works starts is not a good way to kick off a 12 month project. We did eventually find a builder who would honor the terms, at a slightly higher price, and the project has gone well. The whole thing felt sloppy at best, disingenuous at worst. Based on our experience, this is the general feeling toward Keil Co. around Capitol Hill. (See some of the "non recommended Yelp reviews" below). We know of at least 3 legal actions involving Keil Co. just on our block. If you are paying cash, are prepared for overruns, and can deal with Keil Co.'s somewhat loose business practices, by all means they may be a good choice for you - as we said, they do nice work. Otherwise there are many many good alternative options. read more

We contracted with Keil Construction for design consultation on a whole house renovation, to include architectural drawings and construction permits. We paid them $6,000 and then heard nothing from them for six weeks, despite repeated requests. Finally, we received a set of blueprints dropped at our front door, though we had never met with an architect! When we questioned how this had happened without an architectural survey, we were told "since all Capitol Hill row homes are pretty much the same, we took the drawings for your neighbor's house and flipped them." At the time, Jeff Keil was remodeling our neighbor's home and had sent an architect to survey and design their renovation. Basically he took money from both of us and "double dipped", by flipping their plans (both for the existing layout and the renovation plan). One week later,we took the blueprints to Jeff's office and explained 50-100 items that were wrong. We had drastic changes since the plans reflected our neighbors existing house and their remodeling ideas, not ours. These changes were not minor as our houses had entirely different HVAC systems and current layouts. In addition, their remodel incorporated the basement as a living room/office, while ours was to be a full apartment. So we were missing bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and all the electrical and plumbing was wrong. We stated that the scope of work and drawings should reflect our project to minimize mistakes and see the holistic vision. Jeff agreed to make the changes and send an architect to revise the drawings. One month later, we received a call from Keil employee asking us to sign the full contract (for over $200K) - we stated that we did not even have the correct drawings or permits for the remodel. She agreed to inform Jeff but he did not contact us. Finally, nine months after we paid for the project, we asked for: a refund of $6K minus reasonable expenses; an accounting of monies used; an electronic copy of the architectural plans; and our house keys. No response. After repeated calls, we received half our money, but no itemization of invoices, electronic drawings or house keys. The permits totaled $409 and were for one bathroom and they had spent no other money on our job except maybe a few dollars to copy the neighbor's blueprints. This was our very first experience with a contractor and it has been purely awful from start to finish. In the interest of fairness, his finished work looks to be good quality, and he is still working on our neighbor's house. He estimated 2 months to finish their basement and took just over 7 months - so he is incredibly slow and unresponsive, even to them, who have a contract for over $200K. His company wasn't on Angie's List or Yelp when we were researching, but we liked his finished work, so we chose him anyway. That's the last time we'll ever do that. Since last year, I have met over ten people who had similar (most of them much much worse) stories of doing business with him and I wanted to save other people from ending up a victim of his unethical business practices. read more

Jeff Keil is the only person responsible for the awful outcomes of his work ethic. His contractors do a great job, but working with him is like signing over a death deal with the devil. He is unprofessional, disrespectful, and overall uncommunicative. All he does is cut corners and screw the clients, contractors, employees, etc. Anyone who chose's to work with him should honestly have their lawyer review what he wants you to sign over. My neighbor chose him to work on his home to do some small remodels (bathrooms, etc) and Jeff took it upon himself to make the final design decisions. He then has the audacity to say that this is his project and actually yelled and got into a confrontation with my neighbor. He is the epiphany of a two face. read more

We live on Capitol Hill in an historic row house built in 1900 and we worked with Jeff Keil/Keil Construction last year on a rather extensive basement renovation. We have nothing but positive things to say about Jeff Keil and Keil Construction. We literally gutted to the studs what was previously a very outdated and not well constructed english basement unit and then dropped stairs down from our first floor (there were previously no connecting stairs). Jeff's vision and design and his team's craftsmanship throughout the project was amazing. We cut stairs in our dining room in our historic heart of pine wood floor - and Jeff and his team built us an historic bannister to match the historic one going up to our top floor - Jeff searched himself for the newel posts and balusters at Brass Knob and elsewhere. The end product is beautiful - the railing looks like it's been there since the house was built and fits in with all of our chestnut woodwork. Jeff's vision in keeping the historic look and for the flow of all three floors was great. Jeff's team also built lots of built-in's for us in the basement - shelves, cabinets, window seats, etc. - and everything is of very high quality and captures the look we were going for. Their tile work is also beautiful, and we installed a floating wood floor which looks great. There was an initial issue with the wood floor, but when brought to Jeff's attention, it was quickly fixed. We did not have time to personally pick out all of the details so we placed our trust in Jeff on some things and asked him to present options for other things other times - and we love the end result. It was a big job and it was executed beautifully! We are happy, happy, happy with our new basement! Several people on our block have used Jeff Keil/Keil Construction for similar basement and other home renovations and they are all very happy with the work that was done as well. read more
